I was thinking about which current players would walk on to any county team. Not an all star debate in terms of who is best in their position as there is always an arguement over certain positions but if the player was available, they would be picked on every county team.

Definites

Kilkenny
Richie Power - he conducts the KK orchestra these days. Our most important forward and is usually at the centre of things. Taking over Henry's mantle.
Mick Fennelly - a modern version of Frank Cummins is the highest compliment I can give him. His engine would add to any team.
Tommy Walsh - would walk on to any half back line or even put him in midfield or up front.
Henry - calmness personified. Experience and leadership qualities 2nd to none.

Tipperary
Bonner Maher - controversial I know as he didn't even start against Limerick but I couldn't see any county not take him for his dirty ball winning and the work he does for other players. He remainds me of John Power in many ways.
Lar -once he is fully fit. His speed and vision. I'd love to see him and Richie Power on the same team.
Padraic Maher - as fine a defender as you'll see. Can put him in either at full or on the wing. A great attacking defender and complete powerhouse.

Galway
Joe Canning - would walk on to any team. As gifted a hurler I have ever seen. Has had to carry the weight of expectations too much. A couple of his displays have been as fine as you'll ever see.

Any others?

Thought about Gary Maguire but think there would always be a debate between him Herity, and Cummins.

Also Paul Curran, Brian Hogan, JJ Delaney, Noel Connors at the back? Mullane, Eoin Larkin, up front?

I'm not sure you could pick 15 where there wouldn't be any debate?

Some of the young lads in Clare, Limerick, and Cork could figure in the years to come but are just talent at this stage and aren't proven.

I think the question should be ...which players would walk onto the Kilkenny hurling team.

Shane Dooley of Offaly would not be far off the first 15 in any county in the country. Watson of Antrim?

Them and Honan were the very lads I was thinking of but not sure we have seen enough of them yet. Give them a few years and if they continue their progression, than no doubt.

interesting but how could 23 players walk on to any county team ? its not mathematically possible.I also think some of the players mentioned look better because they play on weaker teams.I mean if you had 5 brilliant forwards around John Mullane I don't think he'd look as good judging by some of the angles he shoots from.Because he's with waterford you don't notice it as much as there isn't 5 better options around him. hogan at centre back for kk would be one of first names i'd have down.Colossus and only getting stronger.

I could be upsetting lads here but I dont think Honan from Clare should be next to near these lists. He has done nothing of note at senior level and I know he had an injury this year but even before that he hasnt done much. Age cant be used as the reason because players from other counties have come up with great performances at his age and younger in some cases

+1 re hogan. But I would have the entire KK side (goalie aside) in there bar JC, Shane Dooley, and the two mahers, though you may well revert to the KK starting 14 if this didn't work. Hogan and Mick Fennelly would be names one and two on the sheet

Maybe so Turncoat, but i picked players from all those Counties with reasoning they would make any team in the land.

I think you under-estimate John Mullane big time too tbh but that's your opinion.

Willie Hyland fits the thread title ideally really, ive seen him for Laois and in Fitzgibbon too and think he is an outstanding hurler.

Good post legalalien!

Mullane and eoin Larkin definites too. Larkin for me is a bit of an unsung hero of Kilkenny.

Shane Dooley. Probably Damien Hayes. And maybe dowling and hannon from Limerick. Both have passed every test so far and I think they'll continue to deliver and would probably make any team in the country bar Kilkenny. I know we're up to a lot of forwards at this point but we're not talking about these guys all together rather that as an individual they'd make any team.

Brick Walsh would make any team at centre back or midfield.

I think it's interesting to see who from weaker counties would make any other team, Liam Watson from Antrim would make any team in the country including kilkenny I think. Willie Hyland from Laois would not be far behind and outside of kilkenny would definitely make any other team.

fair enough. game of opinions.Maybe i do underestimate Mullane but he reminds me of Arjen robbin in football.Obvious talents but just seem to always do the same thing when they get the ball as if they were never coached.

Or look at last years All Stars for the answer.

1 . Gary Maguire (Dublin, 1st)

2 . Paul Murphy (Kilkenny, 1st)

3 . Paul Curran (Tipperary, 2nd)

4 . Michael Cahill (Tipperary, 1st)

5 . Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny, 9th)

6 . Brian Hogan (Kilkenny, 1st)

7 . Pádraic Maher (Tipperary, 2nd)

8 . Liam Rushe (Dublin, 1st)

9 . Michael Fennelly (Kilkenny, 2nd)

10 . Michael Rice (Kilkenny, 2nd)

11 . Richie Power (Kilkenny, 2nd)

12 . Henry Shefflin (Kilkenny, 10th)

13 . John Mullane (Waterford, 4th)

14 . Lar Corbett (Tipperary, 3rd)

15 . Richie Hogan (Kilkenny, 1st)

Canning was half injured, and Shane Dooley will never get a chance of an all star as he doesn't get enough Championship hurling.

Is the question not if another team had the choice of him would they choose him...in which case there would be more than 15. Not an all star team
easiest example is Kilkenny as they are the team that others would find hardest to make. If they had the choice of Brick would they start him, they would't move Hogan but they'd play him alongside M Fennelly ahead of Rice/P Hogan/Reid. I think he makes any other team also. Then Brendan Maher would Kilkenny start him. If so (and you think he makes every other team then he also makes it. You would have four players for three positions. Hogan, Fennelly, Brick, Maher.

I think if you would make the Kilkenny team ahead of whats there then he makes the cut in this question, as every other team has question marks/places available in backs and forwards.
Mullane would definitely make the cut.
I don't think any of the Cork lads fall into this category .....yet.

All stars doesn't answer the question habanerocat because a lot of players would mightn't make the all star team but would be accommodated on any intercounty either in a different position or by prompting a reshuffle. So I reckon brick Walsh would make the kk team at midfield, canning would make the kk team but not as a straight swap for the ff who would prob shift to corner or out the field, or Cannibg might only make the team at wing forward.

David Burke (if he could add a bit more consistency) and Fergal Moore also in with a shout.

Shane Dooley is a great shout. Would include him.

Watson - he is a possible. His form in the club championship was stunning. From what I've seen of him, he'd be very close but in all honesty I would say I have only seen him play full matches about 5-6 times in all honesty.

For once I agree with Billy. You make a fool out of yourself enough on horse racing threads. Try not to do the same on a hurling one
