It was a harrowing week, a week when we were awoken from our dreams by the grim reality that our national soccer team was invited to a party that it should never have attended. Euro 2012 is perhaps the best championships since Euro 2000 – unfortunately we will not have contributed one iota to that situation.

Another predictable hatchet job. Trawling the media and cherry picking any negative story re the National Football team and fans, is classic Neurofen.Even the photo chosen, is done so to suggest a specific theme.Does denigrating other sports makes you feel better, or in some warped mindset, makes you feel you are doing the GAA a service?

Not a huge amount to argue about here and many generalizations made that apply to each of the major sports in Ireland. My main gripe is the writer makes comments about the goings on in Poland, yet it is very apparent that he did not actually attend the tournament. There is little doubt that the results on the pitch made a massive dent in the enjoyment of a tournament for the majority of Irish fans. This was evidenced by the sombre moods around the stadia and host cities after each of the games. The vast majority of the fans at the Spain match sang the fields of athenry almost as a last resort. We were well beaten, the game long over, there was nothing else left to do other than boo and leave our own team and we werent going to do that. Many other codes surely could take heed from that - how often do we see a stadium emptying from ten mins to go.......
One point does strike me - surely it is ironic that a website that not so long ago ran a poll to the effect whether it should ban soccer related topics, now finds itself posting the above article as a "fogra". Ironic goings on indeed.

I was at the Euros and went to all 3 games and the Irish fans deserve credit for their support and good behaviour in general. They got on well with other teams fan and especially their Polish hosts and collected lots of money for charity over there and the bus drivers who brought them to games. There has been plenty talk about drunk Irish fans in the negative Irish media but that is an issue for society at large. I see today the Irish fans are getting an award from UEFA for their support but some people would rather focus on the negatives.

Is that not bit like treating us as a special needs case, sort of like "god love them but they are a bit simple, been able to sing is a big achievement to them" lets make up an award and give it to them, they will be over the moon, easily pleased.
PS. I thought it was a very good gesture by the FAI to dedicate the award to the memory of the young chap that died out there.

Personally I think the award is somewhat embarrassing. Nice to get, but really who cares. An award for being a good bunch of lads. However, the fact it has been dedicated to James Nolan and that his family appreciate the gesture means it is worthwhile.

Was there really a need for the sneering, casual misogynistic tone in this piece? It might surprise the author to know that there quite a decent number of females who go to Ireland matches and they know their football. There were plenty of bandwagoners in Poland but I'd say not many were female. Re the caption below the photograph in the link, I know those girls and, yes, they are actually extremely knowledgeable about their football. And I'd bet they attend a hell of a lot more League of Ireland games than the author.
