In the monday examiner they ask an inter county manager to pick someone from any sport and any era to take a free to save your life or whatever, you know the drill. Now as far as i can see they've all picked Henry Shefflin, for fúck sake what a load of unimaginative horseshít. How many here would go for Henry? Who else gets the nod, I'm aware that most sports don't have an equivalent but I assume you can be imaginative.

Biased answer , but Paul Flynn , especially if its a free that requires a goal ! In my lifetime , honorable mentions to John Fenton / Gary Kirby / Jimmy Houlihan / Joe Cooney / Kieran Delahunty ...

Shaq ,from the free throw line, had few equals.

You're on the ball there, not many NBA players were as rubbish from the line. Hadn't thought of basketball, I'd give the nod to Larry.

Back the years i remember Brian Stafford being a serious boy to kick free's.
Eugene Cloonan was a fair detail and could get goals from them as well.

Trevor Giles was another footballer capable of punishing teams from frees. Colin Corkery was another who could kick frees too.

Well of the current lot Shefflin is by far and away the most reliable and best. Even the other day against Dublin he hit a free from half way into the breeze and it sailed over. It almost looked effortless to him. I think it was for his score that got him to the 500th point mark as well.

In football I would have went for Maurice Fitzgerald. He nailed more than he missed. When you look at Borsnan for Wexford yesterday and he kicking them wide all over the place you realise how valuable a free taker like Fitzgerald was.

Has to be Maurice Fitz, the man who deified gravity!

In rugby it would be ROG, in soccer for penalty someone like Alan Shearer I guess. In hurling, ya I would be quiet happy to have my life dependent on King Henry striking it over.

Ray Heffernan from Glenmore was the best free taker I've ever seen. Anything from 90 yards out was almost a guaranteed point. He had an incredibly economical style whereby the ball never went very high but seemed to just drill straight through the air without rising or falling for huge distances. At his best it seemed almost impossible for him to miss.

Despite their other great players, Glenmore would never have won anything without Ray. A 10pt tally would usually have been a poor enough day for him. How he never really made it at inter-county will always be a mystery. I wonder if he would have made it under Brian Cody who has always managed to get the best out of the talent available to him.

Football: so many from the 80s, Rock, Mikey Sheehy, Stafford, then along cam Maurice Fitz

Hurling: Fenton stands out, when he missed in Killarney couldn't believe it! Shefflin obvious, Tommy Dunne was seriously accurate as a kid and senior from frees.

Rugby: Jenkins or Wilkinson!

Pens: Le Tiss

Free kicks: Juninho at Lyon, think he scored about 40, as good as a pen when close enough

Tis easy to kick them when the match is a draw, Larry Tompkins against Galway in 87 stands out for me, much closer to the 65 than the 45, 1 point down.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Larry, that free to draw with Galway in '87 was legendary.

Seanie McMahon also surely deserves a mention.

For some reason, I also have Bob Hiller (England) and our own Tom Kiernan as being fairly boring full backs but deadly reliable kickers. Jonny Wilkinson in his heyday was probably the best of the rugby kickers that I have seen, but ROG, Gavin Hastings and Michale Lynagh were god too.

In soccer, maybe it's childhood memories, but give me Rivelino any day.

Ger Farragher! Dare I say it, but for me he’d have the edge on JC for placed balls.

Larry Tompkins was an incredible free taker in this time apparently.

In Liam Hayes brilliant book 'Out of our Skins', he describes how during Meath training session matches in the 80s, if anyone gave away a free within 70 yards of the goal he had to shout out "Well done Larry" because they knew that any such free given away against Cork would lead to Tompkins sending the resulting free straight over the bar!

Daniel Goulding hit a great one in the all irealnd final v Down, out near the sideline on the cusack stand near dugouts and over the bar..pressure on young shoulders. On the modern players hes one of the best and kicks off the ground.

Liam "Chunky" O'Brien was a serious long distance free taker for Kilkenny. Eddie Keher's record speaks for itself also.

Grant Fox of Auckland/All Blacks was the best under pressure I've ever seen. Would trust him in any pressure situation.
