Waterford concert hits bum note
03 July 2012
A failed music festival fundraiser could end up costing the Waterford County Board as much as €50,000.

Ticket sales for the two-day 'Rhythmfest' in Fraher Field- which featured acts such as Bressie, The High Kings and Jedward - failed to live up to expectations and the Waterford County Board will have to foot the bill.

"Money is scarce, we took a gamble and it didn't pay off," Waterford chairman Tom Cunningham revealed to The Irish Independent.

"On this occasion we hoped to run it on a break-even basis and set the trend for future years. But we did succeed in providing customer satisfaction."

The failed enterprise was due to be on the agenda at an executive meeting last night.

"'Rhythmfest' will probably be discussed but we won't know whether we broke even or whether we lost money.

"But they were brilliant concerts and the people that came really enjoyed them."

It is understood that Waterford County Board are trying to clear a debt of €210,000. In recent times the county's football squad have been struggling to get expenses but that has now been resolved.

In hindsight they should have tried one night first to see how it would go. And Bressie was never going to draw a crowd. They're even deeper in the mire now than they were starting out.

I just youtubed Bressie. I heard the name but never listened to him. Very poor effort. In fairness, we are known for our music and we have some fantastic acts, but he is a disaster. Hopefully he moves along soon. In saying that, he seems like a decent skin though.

Was in the report in the Examiner on Mon or Tues, that apparently only 500 turned up on first day and 2000 for 2nd day, which included Jedward. Hard to imagine they broke even. And checked out the website and it was beyond terrible. But at least they are trying and as Cunningham said, they have to gamble, in fact any festival is a gamble in Ireland this summer, as the weather is ruining them left, right and centre.

That line up was never going to draw a crowd. Jedward were the main act it seems but straight away you're alienating anyone over the age or 14 or 15 and with the weather wet and the way the economy is, the parents werent going to bring the children.
The whole thing in concept is not a bad idea - but you have to use bigger bait to catch bigger fish. People are not going to show up for the sake of it.

Unfortunately this problem was seen coming a mile off by people in Waterford. Granted, the weather certainly didnt help matters, but you could sense desperation to shift a few tickets from the advertising in the lead up to the event - it was fairly funny hearing Cunningham on the radio talking about 'hip hop bands'. But the line up was fairly poor and what really killed it was that Jedward played in Tramore a week or 2 before the Rhythmfest so a lot of the children went to that and they'd hardly be brought to another Jedward show a week later.

Fundraiser being held monday night in dungarvan so as to buy jerseys for the muster final-no money there to actually buy them!!!!! I'm deadly serious. If it wasn't so serious you'd think it was a scene from d'unbelieveables!
But as long as a certain fulltime employee gets his wages and his refereeing expenses, that's all that matters!!
Any hope of NAMA taking us over because these clowns will have us without a team to support soon!

The Waterford county boards inept attempts in getting out of their financial woes is becoming embarassing at this stage. The bad weather wasn't the only factor and the line up wouldn't entice too many to go. There's so many summer festivals and concerts on these days as well that the novelty factor of seeing bands has worn off.

My views on the Waterford co. board are well documented with the exception of our secretary (the only person deemed fit enough to hold a position of authority by croke park) when the held the screening for it the rest are nothing but sit on the ditch antiquated relics who drop names and claim expenses in equal measure!

Most aren’t there for the good of gaelic games in Waterford and if you look at it a lot closer most are not involved in their clubs either so what does that tell you? For the most part these individuals are totally inept when it comes to it and its no wonder there is an anti co. board sentiment toward them! It’s a mindset ah the clubs will do F**k all for us they never did! The clubs would have no bother with the county board if the co. board didn’t keep fcuking them/us over! See davy and his delegation calling off round of champ games despite dozens of assurances this wouldn’t happen, see the levys year in year out, see the fiasco with the ticket levy few years back and the most recent one the absolute shambles that was the gig in dungarvan! If bressie played in the kazbar he wouldn’t get 400 at it! Not to mind a piisising wet night in dungarvan outdoor concert! In the city last year we had 50 cent and a few other international bands and it barely broke even from what I gather and that was promoted to the hilt… how can dungarvan hope to hold one with a v small population by comparison? Especially when drawing on the high kings and jedward who played a few days previously in tramore (a town with a larger population than dungarvan and 9 miles from the city). A lad doing leaving cert accounting would tell you it had too high a breakeven and wasn’t feasible!

Cunningham said it was a gamble? Yea tom it was, most things in life are gambles but most are calculated! You don’t just roll the dice close your eyes and hope for the best!

What bugs me the most though in all of this is the existence of western and eastern boards but also the secretarys getting an “honorium” of 10k lump sum tax free every year! These same ppl pour cold water over secretary when possible trying to undermine him and work he trys to do protecting by their own fiefdoms and agendas which in most instances is about expense claiming of the great administrators of Waterford gaa! Its no wonder our games are in the state they are in with such a shambolic set up! For all the good work on the field in hurling and in football it will be undone by the clowns that run the thing! Most of them wouldn’t run a bath not to mind a multi million euro business which is what county boards are nowadays….

Rant over but this is surely an embarrassment too far along with our sign up “will play munster in thurles for cash” smacks of I need a dollar a dollar? Will chairman and treasurer resign? Unlikely! They will probably brazen it out for a few more years or have a game of musical chairs with everyone swapping seats!
