According to Minister Hogan , the first of the letters have been sent to the tax cheats who refuse to pay it.
Have any of you received one ? Will it alter your stance on refusal to pay ?

Is there some mention of 'tax cheats' in the article?
I'd be a bit annoyed if I received the letter seeing as I paid promptly!

You won't be the only one Id say! Phil Hogan has a holiday home out in Portugal and he refused to pay tax on it and yet he has the cheek to brand whoever didn't pay the household charge
Tax cheats! All major political parties ever did in this country was look after themselves and and their fellow big men and that shows no signs of changing Im afraid.

Like Wallace, I'll plead that I cant pay, and humbly accept a Dail 'Motion of Censure'. Then, like Mick, I might take myself off abroad for a few days.

Haven't received anything through the door as of yet but all I can say is that once Mrs. Larkin gets the letter she will pay despite all my protestations. Me? I would never pay it.
I can't wait for the next election though.

There is a lot of bravado talk from the tax cheats who refuse to pay. It is my opinion that once the letters start dropping in through the letter boxes, there will be a surge of people who will cough up.
At the end of the day, we live in a democracy and these representatives that we elected make the rules that we have to abide by, like it or not.

The point I'm making is that 'these representatives that we elected' to make the rules are exempt, seemingly, although some are proven and admitted tax cheats. There is SOME bravado talk, of course, but dont underestimate the level of opposition to this.

Haven't paid it yet. Was going to pay in September. Delayed paying as a protest to the charge, to the way it's being implemented, the reasons for the charge in the first place etc.
Don't know what to do now these letters are coming out. If I get a letter and pay in September as planned, i'll be raging when knobhead Hogan comes out all smug saying the letters have worked and the country is heading in the right direction etc. If I leave it until after September I'll just have to pay a lot more for something I know I'll eventually have to pay anyway.

Seeing as my identity is well know around these parts I am slow to say outright. However, even a cursory glance of my posts will give you a hint.

Seems to me a bit like the Council Tax we have here in the UK. When it was first introduced as the Poll Tax where everyone in the house had to pay it they rioted in the streets and everyone said they wouldnt pay it. However once they locked up a few OAPs for non payment everyone got the message that it has to be paid. The very unfair Poll tax was replaced by the Council tax but the penalties for non payment are as severe. Needless to say the ammount increases nearly every year. You can pay over 10 months, however if you miss two the total ammount becomes due and failure to pay will result in a visit to court. People now know that it is more important to keep their Council Tax up to date before their mortage. They cant lock you up for not paying your mortgage but the can for non payment of Council tax. Makes you wonder how Irish Government got the idea for the Household charge.

Ya the gist of the letter is as follows
My name and address
Re household Charge
Dear ------
It has come to the attension of (named) Local Authority
that you may be liable to pay the Household Charge on properties at -----------.
This self declaration charge was interduced on 1st January in accordance with the Local Government (household Charge)Act 2011.
If you pay by july 31 the amount due including late paymentfees and interest is 114 per property.
You may be entitled to a waiver in certain limited circumstances. To obtain further information in this regard or make a payment please log on to -------- or contact central bureauat lo call-------.
It is signed by a scribble thats not readable.
Its hardly a letter that would frighten a mouse even if he was caught in a trap overnight.

'You may be liable'
'You may be entitled to a waiver'
'To obtain further information'
It all sounds fairly weak and very much like they are chancing their arms sending the letters out, in the hope that it will frighten people.
Nothing at all any way concrete in that letter, that would have people rushing to pay or fearful of any consequences of not doing so.
