See where Mick Fitzgibbon is the Manager of the Limerick U 16 Football team -back to his roots
I presume that's the same Mick Fitzgibbon that got 6 .caps for Ireland in the 90s including tour of New Zealand.
Played for Trinity Shannon Connacht and Ireland and deserved more caps, a ferocious tackler but sure I suppose he wouldn't be from Ballysteen if he couldnt look after himself !

In my minds eye, i remember him against Wales. The Welsh were moving the ball along the line, the camera is following the predicted line of the move but loses the ball because Fitzgibbon had buried the poor Welsh player with the ball with a sickening tackle. Or did I imagine all this?

I played on a football team with him many moons ago.

Great guy to have with you but always considerd him to be more of a rugby player than a footballer.

Dead sound guy and wish him the best.

What are Mick's football coaching credentials? Every underage level is important but I would argue you need a really rounded coach for U16's as they are that midway point between adult type training and underage development. This isn't a role I would appoint lightly so I hope Mick has the necessary experience and abilities. On top of that everybody taking Limerick underage teams should be on the same page and the work of one age group should be feeding into and working on the work done at the levels above and below. Is this happening I wonder?

Mick Fitzgibbon has been very involved in underage coaching with his club for a good few years now. He has also done coaching courses up to at least award 1 and probably award 2 level. There are a lot of our county underage mentors in both football and hurling who have nowhere near the experience or qualifications of this man. on top of that he brings experience of top level sport which can only be an advantage.

Good to hear Mick has some decent experience and I hope there is a good understanding between coaches working with the various age groups.

He has brought this group of players up from Under 14 and in fairness he was a footballer who became a rugby player. Being a former international Rugby player doesnt mean he would be a bad football trainer.

In fact the more I see people training, sometimes the better GAA players dont necessarily make the best trainers/coaches at all.

1.They may not have the patience to deal with underage players

2.If they happened to be instinctively gifted as players themselves, they may not understand how to improve players.

Would John Fitzgibbon of Cork for instance one of the most naturally gifted goalscoring corner forwards of any era have had the ability to coach/train All Irleand winning forwards that might not have had his instinctive ability, someone like Stephen McNamara of Clare, Bonnar Maher of Tipperary, Conor Clancy of Clare, Cormac Bonner of Tipperary, Timmy McCarthy of Cork, John Hoyne of Kilkenny???

I remember seeing someone training kids once, and he said to them, 'Dont mind this rubbish about working on your weaker foot, if you can kick well enough off one side, you wont need the second'. In those few moments, he made dirt of all the hard work being done by their trainers, who had put a lot of emphasis on developing them as two footed players.

I remember that tackle very well - Tony Ward nearly had a orgasm in the commentary booth!

Mick never won a county junior with Ballysteen. He won a west against St Senans in 92 but Ballysteen got defeated by Ballylanders in the county semi final that year. He was a strong full forward who got a few goals in the county quarter final that year versus Treaty Sarsfields who incidentally had another rugby international in their side, Eddie Halvey.

Gorgeous Gus.
Ballysteen a town? in my day it was a hamlet with a church and Hayes Shop.
Some great footbaling families and players from back there played with Ballysteen/Askeaton.
Tony Fitz Anthony Moran Paddy Ives ShaneGallagher Ranahans,Carrigs one of whom Paddy passed away recently in Shannon and whose son Finbarr played hurling and football for Clare.
I see where some one mentioned Eddie Halvey in this post a amn who also played football for Limerick Senior Team

Yeah still only a hamlet. It was Hollands shop which is closed now as is Hayes Post Office. They have a new GAA field now.
