It has been announced that Limerick will have the honour for 2014. Expect this will give a lift to everyone from that lovely city!

Having to wash your tackies and have them white as snow before walking your pitbull down Cruises Street. No dirty tackies allowed in 2014

Just another rugby thing so is it? And I aint being smart saying that.

Can you give some previous examples? Do I remember Liverpool having it a few years ago?

Ah, It's just National City of Culture, not European City of Culture.

Davy Fitz put in a word a for us and plus as well most Clare people like to associate themselves with Limerick as we are by far in a way the nicest people in Ireland!

That would indicate that nobody was killed in Cork. Surely your source is incorrect? A quick google shows there were plenty of murders in Cork over the last few months.

Rebelrebel30, you can't state statistics that are simply incorrect. Serious problems with violent behaviour in Cork.

Also, thanks for pointing out the low crime rates in Limerick!

And ne'er a newspaper pull-out section or a TV3 Special Report to be seen. Shockin'.

It's wonderful that Limerick has been selected for this honour of city of culture.

Best city and county in Ireland, possibly the world

Way ahead of London, New York, Venice, Rome, Paris, Sydney, Prague etc to name just a few. Tough battle with Galway, though for world's greatest.

I can't possibly comment on the Daily Mail. Awful stuff, I wouldn't trust anything they say.

From the CSO:

In 2011, there were 4 homicides in Cork City and 6 in the county, giving a total of ten

For the same period, there were 4 homicides in Limerick City and county.

So there were 1.93 homicides per million of population in Cork and 2.08 per million in Limerick.

Limerick has a crime problem but Cork is hardly a paradise either. In fact in terms of homicides there were more than twice as much in absolute numbers and not much better on a per capita basis.
