Newstalk were reading out a few texts there earlier.

Mortimer may not be impressed with the content of them, there wasnt a lot of sympathy coming his way.

Didnt hear it all, but the impression given on the show was that he regards himself as a starting player, and he wasnt getting the start.

i suppose he comes across as a bit of an arrogant, cocky type of player, if mayo loose on sunday, it will probably enlarge his ego even further

Won't be seeing the Michael Jackson tribute t-shirt this weekend so... ("Micheal Jackson" as the spelling was that time!)

Last seen with a hurl in his hand and his mobile up to his ear asking K McGeeney for directions to Coill Dubh...

Good one in fairness.

To be honest I admire a man who sticks by his principles. Needless to say there are people in Mayo who will slaughter him, but he obviously has his own strong views, and if you cannot stick by your own principles who else will.

And what exactly are Mortimer's principles?

Apparently he wants a statue of Micheal Jackson erected outside McHale Park but the Mayo County Board aren't thrilled with the idea and have decided not to go along with the idea, so Conor has moonwalked off the panel

i saw him play recently. think it was in the league. he was effective in that game. looked very sharp. say what you like about him i reckon he definitely had a contribution to make to Mayo in the championship be it starting or coming off the bench.

John Maughan mentioned on the radio this evening that he was flying in training.

dont know the detail of why he walked and who is in the wrong. u d need to be in the camp to comment on that.

Personally, I would have more admiration for a guy who could put his county and his own people ahead of himself.

But if as rumoured he was told he wasnt on the matchday squad, he obviously felt he had nothing to contribute

I don't see that as being obvious. It would be as easy to conclude that he considers that he has a lot to contribute, but that he couldn't be bothered fighting for his place.

Mayo County Board release statement on Mortimer

11 July 2012

The Mayo G.A.A. County Board can confirm that due to personal reasons, Conor Mortimer has decided to leave the current Mayo Senior Football Panel.

The Management, Players and Mayo County Board would like to take this opportunity to thank Conor Mortimer for his services this year to Mayo G.A.A. and indeed for his services throughout the years.

Conor has been a great servant to Mayo football and his contributions will live long in the hearts in Mayo people.

We would also like to state the the door is always open for any player who is showing the skills, commitment, ability, and passion for Mayo G.A.A. now and in the future.

A very strange statement from the Mayo CB.

Says he has left the panel for personal reasons. Then in the last line of the statement it says "we would also like to state the door is always open for any player who is showing the skills, commitment, ability and passion for Mayo GAA now and in the future."

This is part of the reason counties like Mayo don't win All-Irelands anymore. If he was on a Kerry or Tyrone team he would stick around and fight for his place and thus improve the team by earning his position.

I heard the lad on Newstalk mention he was Mayo's all-time top scorer; given Mayo's legendary shyness when it comes to points-scoring, thats hardly something to be shouting from the rooftops.
And a Diva, too, by all accounts

And what have you achieved at inter county level you ignoramous? All time top scorer for his county is a fair achievment and he has been a decent servant to Mayo football. He has certainly made a bigger contribution to the GAA than a gobs**te like you.
