Do the Galway fellas here rate Johnny Duane? Is it a bit of a demotion to be back in the corner?

I have seen a fair bit of him in the last couple of years and he has impressed me.I would have a lot more reservations about Gary O Donnell,Gary Sice and Sean Armstrong.I have not seen Armstrong have a good game in the county jersey since an U21 AIF a few years back.Cormac Bane recently left the panel as well and along with Nicky Joyce both would be a loss to most county panels.Would expect a Galway win but it will not be comfortable.

Duane is a good footballer, bit is still very young (U21 last year and may be again this year) in time he will play centre back for Galway. Not sure at all about O'Donnell at cb to be honest. I think he's a wing back or nothing. Also it is time for Sean Armstrong to step up as they say, we know he has the ability but he just hasn't set the world on fire as a county senior. If Bane has let the panel thats a huge loss to Galway. For me he would be one of the most natural forwards in Galway and was always good for a few scores. This is going to be a teak tough game for this Galway team. Most expect Galway to win, but the reality is that we haven't won a game outside connacht since 2004!! So winning would be a big achievement for this young team. I like mulholland as manager and i think he's taking this team in the right direction. Strangely as the game is in belfast i think that it might suit Galway in a way. We just don't seem to play that well in Pearse Stadium for some reason.

Gona stick my neck out and say Galway by 2.

Another disgraceful one point defeat in the qualifiers. Our 9th one point Championship defeat in 7 years. Haven't beaten a team outside Connacht since 2004. Mulhollands starting line up and tactics have to be questioned. The blanket defence has been around for years now, and Galway Footballers still haven't found a way to cope with it.

Not calling for Mulhollands head or anything like that, there were no huge expectations at the start of the year, but at the same time, this must go down as another massive low point in Galway football. Things have gone down hill fast since that auld gobshíte John Joe took over as head of the county Board, time he was ran out of town. Maybe Anthony Cunningham should be approached to manage the Footballers too!

Bitterly disappointing result yet again for the Galway footballers. Goes to show that we are now a mile off the top teams in the modern game. We're still going ok at minor and U21 because the modern tactics aren't to the fore as they are at senior. In reality we are a very average 3rd division team by championship standards. The only was is up for Galway, plenty of football in the county but perhaps we have to swallow our pride and endorse the ultra defensive systems that now prevail. Even Kerry have done it!!

I've been a 'free agent' for quite a few years now, Faldo! Living a long way from my West Connemara home. Although after the session I went on in Dublin following the glorious win in Croker Sunday, and drowning my sorrows tonight, I might well sign up for Alcoholics Anonymous!

I'm sure like myself, you were saddened for Padraig Joyce, who today, almost certainly, played his last game for Galway. He came on and nearly saved the day again, but to be fair, Antrim didn't deserve to lose, and the lads who got Galway into the mess didn't deserve to win. Didn't think things could get much worse, we can only hope now that we have actually hit rock bottom and that things will improve from here...I know, I said that last year too.

Did the management team not realise the Sligo game was televised? The whole country could plainly see we didn't have the gameplan or midfield to pick apart a team sitting deep or playing an extra man back there as Antrim did. Plain truth is we don't have the dogged backs to tactically foul like Antrim did. And again the only one to stand up was p Joyce he owes us nothing. I thought this year was about building so they should just go with youth, especially Flynn an O curraoin from the start of the year next year. There's a few track suit collectors who no doubt will be laughing in halo tonight who have had their final chance. One win in the qualifiers in ten years pretty much. Disgraceful. The hurlers might let us down but they've taken some good scalps and produced some great performances over the same timeframe, and believe me they take losses worse than some of the footballers. Not the likes of Joyce or Meehan who will be disgusted at this.

Don't know how you could absolve Meehan from blame. Hes never produced at senior bar one game against Kerry. He'd be grouped with a long line of underachievers in the last 10yrs in my book.
Too many lads in cushy positions with no real competition is causing huge problems. Alot living off past minor and u21 glories with a belief Galway deserve to be at the top table, so have scant regard for the Sligos and Antrims out there.

Nail on head. Did Mulholland and his selectors not think for a moment that Antrim would do anything other than stifle the Galway forwards by dropping men deep and slowing down the play at every opportunity. I know it's his first year at senior inter-county management, but the dogs on the street knew what game-plan Antrim would employ, it showed naivety of the highest order.

Of course the players also have to take a massive portion of the blame...They have obviously have learned nothing from all the one point defeats over the years. one point up into injury time, Jaysus Christ, make life difficult for them, kill the game, smother the play, do what the opposition have been doing to you for the last 70 minutes.

I can't agree with you about Meehan. He beat Sligo single handedly in the stadium one year (07?) and got a few good goals against mayo and of course has been crippled with injury. Sure he has the potential to do much more but what can he do about the deadwood around him? Sadly it's hard to know will he ever get a game in croker again and light it up like he did in 08

Hold that Line

In fairness I've seen Meehan have plenty of good games for Galway. The Kerry game admittedly was an exceptional performance by any standard. Mike Meehan is about the last of Galway's problems. 6 months ago his career was in serious doubt. Even being on the field today was a victory for him.
