The spectre of the six-day turnaround in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is almost at an end, if the GAA's National Fixture Planning Committee follow through on their current plans.
The Committee, chaired by PAUL KINSELLA from KILKENNY, have proposed a new schedule for the Championship which would see qualifiers in various rounds played on separate weekends and the All-Ireland quarter-finals would also be spread over two weekends.
The current Championship structure is seen as unforgiving on the beaten provincial finalists. For example, the losers of this weekend's Leinster and Ulster finals only have six days to recover before they come up against their fourth round qualifier opponents.

Or a Bring the Ulster & Leinster provincial finals forward a week. Dublin played the first Leinster q/f on the first weekend in June. Kildare played their q/f on the 17th of June. Where is the logic in this? Could the not play 4 q'f's on the one weekend. Make it a bumper weekend.
All finalists in these two provinces have 3 weeks before the final except Down who have a full 4 weeks.
There is so much play in the way all the provincial championships are played off it's crazy.
How about each province must fix their provincial q/f's & s'f's for the same day. Would go a long way towards solving fixture problems.
I would think the football q/f's all being on the one weekend is a great weekend of football. I think spreading them out over two weekends is a bad idea. When the 4 hurling q'f's were on the same weekend it was like a festival of hurling. 4 knockout matches on one weekend to decide the AI semifinalists. Brilliant. Whatever about the system being used up to this point this was a great weekend of hurling. Now it's gone!!! Don't make the same mistake in football.
The main reason this was got rid of was because it was downgrading the value of the Munster hurling final. If the Munster hurling championship is as important as it thinks it is then this should not have been a problem.
Limerick Clare last Saturday night was not Munster Championship & I don't think anyone was complaining. Open draw all the way.
P.S. I'm from Limerick & would be delighted to win a Munster Championship. 2 finals in the last 16 years in a 5 team competition where we've had a chance of winning most games really makes you wonder how we've had such a bad record.
I still think the Munster Hurling Championship is holding back hurling from being even more popular though & that's after a really good 4 games this year. Duration - 7 weeks!!!!

It's hardly rocket science, but at least somebody is trying to sort it out.
The championship is very spaced out but yet some teams have a 6-day turnaround.
Another thing he might sort out is avoiding repeat pairings, like they do in the hurling.

Sure he can just ask a few more counties to follow the KK example and not bother. Congestion sorted.

Why does it matter where he's from. He's arranging fixtures not playing in them. All he's doing is putting two counties together and giving a date. Anyone can do that no matter sport it is.

If the Ulster and Leinster football finals were brought forward a week, then last sunday we'd have the Munster hurling final, Connacht football, Leinster Football and Ulster football all on the same day.
Which ones would you not televise?

Well I suppose Kilkenny football folk have to do something to keep themselves occupied during the summer...

Well there are six provincial finals that are involved in the AI Championships. So I'd have the Leinster & Munster hurling finals on the same day. Then you could have 2 football finals on each of the following Sundays.
TBH I don't really see why they all would have to be on TV anyway. Again if the 4 provincial football finals were all on the Same day or the same weekend to allow for tv coverage - 2 on Sat evening & 2 on Sunday evening - would this not be a huge weekend of football that showcases the sport with 4 provincial finals?

How the hell is the munster hurling championship holding the development of hurling back? Please explain.
The munster championship was superb this year. The Leinster championship is good too. Kilkenny, Dublin and Galway are going to have some right battles over the next few years. you have two competitive provincal championship and then the all ireland competition kicks in. i dont see what benefit an open draw will bring to be honest.
I think people throw out the phrase of open draw as if it is a cure for all ills. There is very little wrong with the structure of the hurling championship. leave well enough alone
