Is it not time for RTE to bring in some new analysts and ditch the old one? Donal O'Grady has been on and off it since the 80's. Spillane and Brolly should be long gone. Cyril is sickening at this stage.
Thought Aaron Kernan was good tonight. Liam Sheedy is interesting. Jason Ryan was also good today, but Tony Davis next to him wasn't great. Surely there are a few recently retired players who could do some modern analysis of the games for us.
Anyone like to make some suggestions?

Couldn't agree more. They need to freshen it up big time. Gone way too stale. The likes of Farrell, O'Grady, Mulcahy Davis et al always seem to state the obvious and never offer much insight at all.
Loughnane is still very good in fairness though. Brennan and Liam Sheedy excellent hurling analysts. Need to add more new faces and get rid of the old.

jason ryan has been on every show going since wexford were knocked out a week ago - championship matters thursday, sunday game tonight, sport at 7 extra tonight.
I think Kevin McStay is good. Brolly should have been made come on tonight to account for his comments on Colm Cooper. Ciaran Whelan is new to the gig the last season or two. Quite good i feel

There should be a 5 year period for all these analysts and then they should be gone.Plenty of retired GAA players could do with the work and the GAA media is dominated by the same few face. Most Sunday game panelists have a newspaper column aswell.Perhaps a better idea would be for none of the Sunday Game analysts to have jobs with any other media outlets so as to provide as broad a range of views as possible. Also there are barely any GAA pundits from weaker counties and I think players from smaller counties might provide some more realistic analysis and not Pat Spillane "i'm not imprssed by anything apart from the top 2 or 3 teams" type analysis.

eddie brennan's article in the sunday times each week makes good reading. a good edition to the sunday game too. the old cyril and mulcahy double act is wearing a bit thin at this stage too. Loughane is very good still

Analysts shouldn't be working on games involving their own county. It leads to too much bias, and a reluctance to call things as they are.

Jason Ryan isn't much of a football manager, so maybe he fancies a career in the media?

Eddie is an honest man as displayed in his on field performances.
Eddie knows the rules of hurling and the rules of being a Garda. Eddie would never break the rules of either.

As a Garda I think that only refers to employment income. Plenty of Gardaí would have other income streams, such as renting out houses, etc. Eddie probably works off an invoice basis, like a contractor.

Loughnane should not commentate on Clare games, similarily Mulcahy on Cork or fast Eddie and Duignan on KK. Would love to see Tom Ryan or Babs get a run at it for comic value. Where is Paul Flynn this year?

Completely disagree-2 spoofers who are well past their entertainment sell by date although Spillane nowhere near as bad as Dunphy. Spillane is a bit more tolerable when he is not sniping back and forth with the worst person in the world, Joe Brolly.

Ah but if they did that they'd all have to get NUJ cards , there would be a surfeit of them and they would bring down the wages for other sports journalists! But I agree with you...I dont like this double jobbing stuff , but of course if they make a name for themselves on tv then the print media will snap them up.
I think Kevin Mc Stay is the best football analyst on tv. I like Ciaran Whelan and Tony Davis too. Brolly and Martin Carney should have been let go a long time ago and I do find Spillane hard to listen to.
In hurling Liam Sheedy and Loughnane are top notch. Eddie Brennan , Michael Duignan and Thomas Mulcahy are very good. In fact most of the hurling analysts are fine but I do wish they would get rid of Cyril. He wrecks my head and leaving aside his sometimes colourful use of languange he never says anything that is remotely interesting in terms of what he is supposed to be on the panel for i.e. analysing hurling matches.

How come they have an Apres Match after RTE's soccer coverage, but don't do it for the Sunday Game?

While there is a natural bias commentating on one's own county, I think that it's balanced out by the pundit having a higher level of knowledge about each player, so I don't mind it.
As long as you've one from each county.
By the way, nice dig at Duignan above. I actually missed it at first glance.....!

In the next few years I'd love to see Sheedy, Loughnane and Donal Og as the three wise men. Sheedy is excellent, Loughnane provides the drama and, while I'm not too fond of him, anyone who's ever read a piece of analysis by Donal Og will know he's very, very good and astute. I think that we would get some top analysis then.
I'd have a backup trio of Brennan, Duignan and Farrell (purely for the pearls of wisdom).
In the football Spillane, Brolly and O'Rourke all the way, mostly because I'm still hoping Spillane and Brolly will start slapping each other silly one of these days with O'Rourke jumping in to aid whoever shares his current opinion.

That despite all Cooper's All-Irelands and individual awards, he's essentially a choker and can't play well in big matches.
Said he bottled last year's final v Dublin, despite being the top scorer from play with 1-1.
Reminded me a bit of how Dunphy used to pick whoever is the best soccer player in the world at the time and say that they are overrated and rubbish. Pure attention seeking.
