His remark sparked several complaints from viewers of 'The One Show'.
While on air, Thompson was shown an image of a torch runner with the words "Oylmpic torch bearer", tattooed on her arm, to which he said the person responsible for the misspelling must be Irish.

Have some people no sense of humour at all ...at all?

I was watching Yes Minister (terrific comedy) recently on GOLD and there was a joke to the effect that the Irish are stupid. Admittedly a few other European countries were lampooned in the sketch but I couldn't but be disappointed.

I don't mind Irish jokes, everyone pokes fun at everyone. But I'm a bit sick of the joke that we are thick people or drunks. Surely there's a few new ones they could come up with at this stage?

Absolutely superb comedy - from a different era however when political correctness etc didnt exist. Same as John Cleese in Fawlty Towers having a pop at the Germans.
You couldnt get away with it now, but at the time it was acceptable.

Thompson showed a lack class when talking about Steve Redgrave:
Thompson says five-times gold medalist Redgrave, 50, is "not in the same class" as either himself or his friend, Sebastian Coe. "He is a rower and I think track and field is the toughest sport in the Olympics...in my view Seb is the second greatest Olympian – after myself."
Thomspon won gold medals in 1980 and 1984. In 1980 his main competitors would have been North America athletes but they boycotted it, and in 84 it would have been Eastern Block athletes but they boycotted it so his achievements aren't as great as he thinks they are, especially when you consider that in 1988 when none of his competitors were missing he only managed 4th.

When Thompson was in his prime comments such as that was something you heard on a fairly regular basis. However Black people suffered far worse racist abuse. The older Irish lads living in London at the time would tell you the best thing ever to happen for the Irish was the Blacks arriving,as suddenly English people directed the abuse towards the new arrivals. Amazing then that he should come out with something like this when Im sure either himself or his family must have encountered some kind of racist abuse.

cowpat, unfortunately we're only too ready to supply the jokers with new material. Again, and again, and again.

I dont think Daley Thompson has a sense of humor because that wasnt funny in the slightest and I like a good anti Irish joke as much as anyone, the Simpsons had some brilliant ones over the years.

Has any black person ever been done for racism.
Rio Ferdinand was quite happy about Ashley Cole being called a choc ice, yet if it's was a white man he would be public enemy no1

He also said something along the lines of how could he be the greatest Olympian when he won his medals in a sport you sit down for.
