Time to split Kerry into two teams- for the football.

Given their almost total dominance of Gaelic football, is it not time Kerry were divided into two teams. Say North Kerry and South Kerry.
This might revitalise the Munster Football championship, and also help teams like Tipperary, Limerick and Clare succeed. After all for example Galway hurlers joined the Leinster hurling championship. It could be an experiment for we'll say 5 years.slán

Ridiculous stuff
Ah sure why stop with Kerry;
Lets Divide the following
- Kilkenny into two for the hurling
- Cork into two for the football
- When the Cork hurlers get strong again lets divide them into two!
- Donegal look like they are getting strong so lets divide them into East and West as well

If you were going to split anyone it would be Cork into West Cork (almost all football) and East Cork (almost all hurling). The city would be a buffer that could declare for West Cork in the football, or east Cork for the hurling as there's both in around there.
Dublin North and Dublin South would also be decent options considering the population.
Galway at the moment is effectively split, most north and west is football and south and east is hurling. They have different county boards and different jersey's too.
Apart from that i don't see any other counties, either through area or population, having the capability of being split without making things worse, or less viable.
You'd be far more likely to get amalgamations, like Carlow/Kilkenny and Sligo/Lietrim in football, or Meath/Westmeath in the hurling.
Neither scenario is ever going to happen though.

You might also need to combine Kerry with say Clare or Limerick at underage level to make them competitive at these grades!!

Poor wum, but here is something that might not be too far down the line, splitting Dublin into north and south for football. Certainly the other counties in Leinster might agree, they have won 7 out of the last 8 Leinsters, and it would be no surprise to anyone if they won the next 4 or 5. The under 21 footballers won the All Ireland at a canter this year, no one has come within 10 points off the minors in Leinster this year. Dublin seem to have imporved their underage structures in the last 10 years, and given their numbers this will spell dominance. Think about it, not one of the under 21 All Ireland team is starting for the seniors , their back 6 is all under 25 , and they have some scary forward talent coming through, and that fella O'Conghaile will be some midfielder in a few years time.

How many All Irelands have Cork football won? Donegal football. Kerry have won more than any other county by a country mile

This mad idea would just hand another 20 All Irelands to Kerry and possibly Meath.

While I dont think the OP was entirely serious and I dont think any county would agree to being split a couple of things
1) I too have heard many many west cork men say in a 90% serious way that they thought they would win nearly as much on their own....this doesnt necessarily stand up to scrutiny but it is the case that , IMHO, winning a cork junior football championship by coming out of the Carbery division is probably the hardest championship I am aware of at club level given the uniform decent standard of the west cork championship which must first be won......A west cork county team would be unlikely to match Kerry or a "united" cork team but it would be as good or better than than most countys based on numbers alone (currently circa 6 or 7 senior clubs, 2 ??intermediate, 20+ junior )
2) Regarding dublin and other large population centres..... splitting will not happen in my lifetime but if you consider that leitrim can get a county team , albeit div 4 standard, out of a population around 1/5 the size of blanchardstown it is ridiculous to opine that a split dublin would be unable to, after a couple of years, field two division 1 standard teams..........inter county players are part nature and part nuture and the ,ore guys yu expose to hgh level preparation and games, the more good inter county standard players you end up with.......

I think the West Cork team would do well. What they'd lose in personnel they'd gain with the sense of identity and bond with fellow West Cork men.
Does someone from Urhan really have much of a sense of identity with someone from Douglas or Knocknaheeney?

Really I was making reference to Tipp winning u14 15 16 17 and minor last year. With 200+ clubs Cork are always going to win trophies. Probably should be winning more

Dublin won't be split. Never going to happen. Mooted about ten years ago. Utterly rejected by the county and would be again.

Never say never. The fact that the DCB rejected doesn't mean its not a bad idea, it also doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. If the DCB had any smarts about them they would actively consider this. Given the playing resources Dublin have at the moment , they could field a second team in the national league and they would hold their own in Division 3.

I agree though the only fly in that ointment is that the Carbery divisonal team should be more successful, especially at the moment with Bantry down intermediate....tho with ross, clon, skibb, illen players added along with those junior/ intermediate players for whom playing with divison is not a priority they would certainly be a formidable enough side given time.....as per my earlier post I think they would be good enough to compete with most teams most of the time.....just not enough numbers maybe to ever field a team capable of winning all irelands.....though the cork team in the 40's had something like 6 from Clon alone....

You are correct D2 it will not happen......but if it did I remain to be convinced that dublin would not end up with two sides just as good as what they have now....with tehplaying numbers 9 ignoring actual population0 there has to be huge potential talent not being realised....

I think you wrong again. Tipp didnt win U15 or U16 last year...Cork won the Kelleher U15 and U16 competitions last year and this year won the U16 competition again beating Kerry in the final. Its worth remembering too Cork dont play as 1 team in these developement competitions( corcaigh and Rebel og) unlike Tipp for example.
They do win much...........
11 All ireland U21 football titles ( 1st Roll of honour)
10 All ireland minor football titles ( 2nd roll of honour)

Wouldn't be in favour of a Dublin split but I think its will happen and will be decided at congress by all 32 delegates

First of all there are a lot more than 32 delegates at Congress. Each county is entitled to one delagte for every ten affiliated clubs up to a maximum of ten plus overseas units plus the current Central Council etc.
Secondly the Dublin County Board cannot be split into two without its agreement. A motion would have to be put to Congress and no club or county in their right mind from a county other than Dublin would put forward such a motion in the face of Dublin opposition. Nor would Central Council.
It's not going to happen so forget about it
