Bolt v Blake is an obvious one but there are so much more. I'm just back from a fortnight in England and have been reading their dailies particularly the Telegraph and the Independent. They have gone Olympics nuts and there was some fabulous pullouts and supplements at the weekend. I watched the show on Vicky Pendleton which was on BBC3 the other night and as a result I am really looking forward to her seemingly inevitable clash with Anna Meares although I don't think she will win it.
Which event has ye most excited(I'm sick of beach volleyball gags)?

Lots of them but you cant beat the 100 metres final can you? Obviously the other track and field events etc. Looking forward to seeing Michael Phelps in action in the swimming. Even with the Irish lads, I wont be too interested in the boxing. It is boring enough and there is a lot more interesting events.

Anything but the ****ing swimming which seems to take up all of first week and basically consists of various indistinct "splashes of water" racing one another.
WTF is the backstroke all about? Track and field doesn't have runners going backwards!!

100m, 200m, 400m, 3000m, 5000m and long jump always make good viewing as regards track and field but my main interest this year will be the boxing. I could pretty much take or leave the other events particularly the joke ones like soccer, golf and basketball if USA are involved. The swimming can be ok at times too.

Of course the 100 metres is still the premium event, and I'm glad that I witnessed, LUYVE, the Seoul 88 Final, no matter how tainted its proven to be.
After that its probably the 400 metres, - partly for its staggered nature and the way you really only get a clear picture going into the straight, - and the 10,000 metres, which is partly about cat and mouse strategy, and partly about burning off the opposition with a blistering sprint.
I enjoy most of the the swimming finals, also; and the boxing

Lochte v Phelps
Blake v Bolt
Should make for some cracking finals between the above combinations. 100m/200m double for Bolt pays out at about 6/4 which may be a bit short given his recent injury problems but at the same time can you really back against him

Let's hope he doesn't fall off any bikes between now and then which may aggravate his injury.

Looking forward to all the Track and Field events. Also the boxing when the Irish lads and lassies are involved.
Some swimming is OK, but they've too many events, so the likes of Phelps (and Spitz before him) load up on medals. If you can win 8 golds in one games, how hard can any of them really have been?
No interest in any of the team sports. Or gymnastics.

For me the highlight will undoubtedly be looking at the 5,000 metres final in Montreal on youtube.
The greatest victory ever in a middle distance race.

The cycling road race, the organizers seem to have made the course with mark Cavendish in mind. It would be 'team GB' first gold of the games so there will be a lot of pressure on him. Having said that the Olympics have never been won in a sprint so perhaps he will be burnt further back in the course, if that happens you never know, it could be anyones. Beyond that any of the track and field and of course the boxing because of the Irish interest in it.

Two things I'm looking forward to
1. Bill O Herlihy trotting out the usual "are we expecting too much of our athletes?" after another dismal performance by our track and field and I use the term loosely "athletes".
2. The closing ceremony.
Dreading hearing Jimmy Magee on the airwaves. I remember him taking calls for the phone in show on Radio 1 after football championship qualifiers. He spoke about some roads in Monaghan and the Olympics and nothing about the matches. That was ten years ago so he's bound to have got a lot worse.

Another favourite one is; "of course his/her real aim is to be prepared for the Olympics in 4 years time."

Does anyone remember the commentator RTE had for the basketball 4 years ago? Christ he was a hoot. Hope's he's on again.

IAAF president Lamine Diack confirmed today that he had been informed of a positive drugs test by a leading athlete.
A report in French sports daily L’Equipe has named Morocco’s Mariem Alaoui Selsouli, the favourite for the Olympics 1,500m gold medal, as having tested positive for a banned diuretic.

Tim McCarthy.
He did commentary for a Limerick waterford hurling replay which was equally memorable.Featuring the immortal line "John Mullane, he shakes , he bakes"

Just curious John Joe - why do you use the term "athletes" loosely?
