Apologies if already dealt with as I've been away and haven't looked at my laptop in a fortnight. Redgrave has insulted Daley claiming that he is not even in the top 5 British olympians and including himself and a sailor in his list, what a bóllocks, I've great respect for rowers and briefly did a bit meself but it's clearly a minority and elitist(except where i come from obviously) sport while Daley Thompson was a God for my generation and would probably have won 3 golds in a row if his pole hadn't broken in 88.
Daley for me by a mile.

Daley won Gold in 1980 Moscow - No USA and Others
" " " " " LA - No USSR or East Euro's
Alan Wells won the 100m in 1980
Petra Minea won the 200m in 1980
Both of Thompson Golds are Weakened by the above political situations that existed
Regrave Qualified, Competed and won Gold at Five seperate Olympics - A no brainer for me!!

I'd agree, Redgrave's longevity was amazing. That and he suffered from Type 1 Diabetes and ulcerative colitis. The British tend to go overboard in lavishing praise upon their Olympians but Redgrave was an absolute class act.

I would suggest that all of Redgraves medals have to be viewed thru the fact that less than 1% of people have probably ever been in a boat whereas we've all had a cut at track and field in some way, also by winning gold at both olympics surely your point about daley id rubbish.

Strange to think that Redgrave (and his rowing team) won GB's only gold medal at the 96 games where they ranked 36th overall, technically behind Ireland!
GB really turned it around, getting 19 gold in Beijing to rank 4th overall. That's some turnaround even if a lot of it was down to concentrating on some of the less competitive events such as sailing, cycling and rowing.

No question re Wells speed - he consistently beat best of USA in that period. Question marks re aspects of his preparation mind you!!!!
Thompson easily best decathlete of his generation though.

In addition to 5 golds Redgrave won a bronze in the coxless pairs at Seoul. The coxless race was immediately after he had just won gold in the coxed pairs with Matthew Pinsent. That is just animal, something like getting a bronze at 10,000 metres immediately after winning gold at 5,000.
You could argue that rowing is just supreme mental toughness and fitness with little or no finesse or skill. By the same token you can argue that Daley Thompson wouldn't come within an asses roar of an individual event medal of any colour. Ally that to the reduced competition of Moscow and LA and it has to be Redgrave by a distance.

That was actually with his original partner Andy Holmes but in fairness what were they doing competing for both and why indeed do both categories exist? Those arguing for Sir Steve are obviously ignoring the elitist minority element of Rowing, would ye have the same respect for a shooter/fencer/greco roman wrestler etc?

And how many people have taken part in the proletariat sport of decathlon ffs???
Have you ever tried rowing? It is absolutely animal, add in the fact its spread over 20 YEARS and his diabetes, and he far outceeds thompson.
How anyone who won a medal in moscow can compare it to any other olympics is fooling themselves -soft won

Yes i have seanie, read the thread, i think i'm from the same neck of the woods as yourself and count numerous Irish champion rowers among my friends and family. The fact is that it is still a minority and elitist sport in the main. The decathlon is hardly for wimps is it? Everybody has attempted track and field in some form, that was my point, very few people have rowed in any form at all.
Thompson won in 80 and 84 thereby beating everybody and setting world records, he had a great chance in 88 only his pole broke in the pole vault and injured him, he might be an egotistical príck but he was a fantastic athlete, no offence to Redgrave as an athlete but i think he was disrespectful to Daley.

Thompson's gold winning performances in 1980 and 84 would still have been gold regardless of boycotts. In fact his main rival the German (Hingsen) was not part of the 1984 boycott.
Thompson was undefeated in all competitions between 1979 and 1987 breaking the world record 4 times!
To put in perspective what an incredible all round athlete he was, 3 of his personal bests from about 30 years ago (long jump, 400m and pole vault) surpass today's Irish records.
Redgrave sat in a boat with some of his mates and rowed.
Can't believe someone above mentioned the great Pietro Mennea as an attempt to belittle the Moscow Olympics !!!!
Mennea held the world record for 17 years and it took a peak Michael Johnson to beat it.
