Excerpt from Brian Corcoran's excellent book on Cork's preparations for the 2006 AI semi final betweeen Cork and Waterford, there are very few players left on either team now from that time, just wondering does anyone think that this poster used by Cork would still apply today....I don't think there are as many individual talents on the Waterford team, a lot of new players on the Cork team too :-

Might as well stoke the fire before Sunday, what fun would it be without a bit of slagging:

OUR WORLD (as of today)
Winning - - all since 2006
Discipline - one out all out
Professionalism - Most professional book writers and ball switchers around.
Team Spirit - unless you are a young lad hungry to represent your county
Unity - one out all out (again)
Positivity - that they have won - all since 2006
Performance - extremely lacking to date by Cork standards
Taking responsibility - it wasn't our fault it was Gearld McCarthy , or Denis Walsh or .... opps sounds like Waterford
Setting standards - best strikers in the world

Their (Waterford hurlers) WORLD
Losing - yeah but still have two Munster crowns since 2006 and a couple of Cork scalps to bat
Fighting - some people might call that passion but sure what would life be without a dust up now and then.
Blaming others - like Gerald McCarthy, Denis Walsh and the Cork County board -
Playing for oneself. not the team - guilty here, but have still acheived resutls of note.
Relying on luck - every team relys on luck at some stage unless they are arrogant enough to believe they never get the rub of the green. Of course you can make your own luck by switching balls now and then
Bringing down others to their level - well we certainly managed to do this with Cork by the look of results since Mr Corcoran wrote his book.

The more I look at it we shuld be thanking Brian for his comments, we seemed to have learned alot from them whereas the Cork Lads - not so sure .

Anyway enought slagging - looking forward to the next instalment on Sunday - but cannot believe how quite the build up is.

Read it again would by my opinion. I found him to be straight talking character with repsect for his opponents. Anything negative he said about rival's was honest & well backed up i thought.

A good read in general.

It's a great read. A few Waterford people got the hump about that chapter in the book about the 06 semi final but I thought it was a great insight into the psychological aspect of modern day preparation.

I haven't ever read it as I read this part of it first and it turned me off contributing a few quid to him as it's a fairly disrespectful thing to say in public about fellow amateurs. Is there a context to it in relation to the book as a whole?

The context is that it was preparation for the semi final and that Cork were looking for 'an edge' in their mental preparation. When discussing the actual game itself, he talks about how he knew Tony Browne was going to fight to the death by the look on his face after Naughton bagged his goal.

He also states that at the very end of the match after Cusack had batted away McGrath's free and Corcoran picked the ball up in the corner, he knew he had to run the ball because he couldn't just clear the ball out the field with a player of Ken McGrath's quality lurking out there.

If you're into GAA books then I'd definitely recommend it and I certainly wouldn't let a few passages published in the papers about Waterford deter you. Personally, I found Corcoran's book far more engrossing than Donal Og's.

It is a very good actually, very honest, unintentionally funny too in places. He talks about picking up the examiner on a Monday morning and always seeing reports of fights at club games between Bgunner Lismore and Mount Sion, this underlined that Waterford were a team of individuals not a team like Cork.

Is this something that still applies, are Cork likely to be more of a team on Sunday?
