Paul McCartney has slammed the decision to leave David Beckham out of Britain's Olympics football squad.

Coach Stuart Pearce didn't pick Beckham for a place on the team as one of the over 23-year-olds last month and Macca has urged Pearce to have a last-minute rethink about his decision.

"He's a national hero. I would've thought Beckham would be first choice because of his huge contribution to getting the Olympics," McCartney told Shortlist magazine.

"But some idiot decided otherwise. I feel a bit sorry for the three over 23s, because we're going to be looking at them and saying, 'That should've been Beckham'. He's a national hero, a crowd-puller. It would've been great for him to lead out our British football team.

"But some person somewhere said, 'So-and-so's playing better'. Like it matters."

A source from Britain's Olympics team says that Pearce will not change his squad.

"It doesn't matter if Paul McCartney, the Queen and every star in Hollywood has their say," the source told The Sun. "Stuart Pearce has picked his team and that's it."

Regardless of Beckham, it has to be noted that Stuart Pearce is a shocking manager.
He is a clueless man.

Is it any wonder that England never amount to anything at national level when they have the likes of him and Southgate involved with player development.

The Beckham phenomenon is truly remarkable. As far as I can figure out the Brits hold him up as some sort of a moral role model and one of the all time great soccer players. He is neither.

Not much of a role model getting a bird pregnant out of wedlock in his early 20's and when he did get around to eventually marrying her, carrying on with the nanny when he's barely married a wet day.

As a soccer player he's very moderate. No real pace or ability to beat a player. Such is the poverty of modern day British football, his ability to hit an accurate cross in the eyes of the misguided British media and public seemingly elevated him to world class status. When I lived in England back in the 70's and early 80's, just about every team in England had a right and left winger that could deliver a pin point accurate cross. Beckham played in a Man U midfield with Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes all three of whom were vastly superior players.

How can he expect to get selected for the Olympics when he hasn't played soccer at any serious level in years since decamping to the US. Even if he was playing at a serious level, his questionable temperament at tournament level would not have warranted inclusion. Sent off at the 1998 World Cup in a crucial knock out match for kicking an Argentinian player. Pulling out of a tackle against Brazil in the 2002 World Cup Quarter Final which resulted in Brazil's match winning goal. Missing a penalty in a shoot out against Portugal in the 2004 European Championships.

An innocent abroad, in fairness, sure didn't he wear the skirt in that family, allegedly.

Not true. Let his country down in the worst possible way in the 2nd round of the 1998 World Cup against Argentina. Sent off for a petulant kick on Diego Simeone. With a full compliment of 11 on the field, that's a match England would most likely have won.

All the great former Olympians they could have used to pass the flame to their most decorated Olympian Steve Redgrave - Roger Bannister, David Hemery, Allan Wells, Steve Ovett, Duncan Goodhew, Sally Gunnell, Kelly Homes, David Wilkie and they wheel out that goon Beckham.

Wouldn`t have much time for Pearce but a manager is a manager and decisions should never be swayed by public opinion.I would be inclined to think that he would have a more learned football brain than Sir Paul.

Wouldn't be too sure about that.

Anyone with half a brain would have had D-Beck in there as captain. They wouldn't have got the games without him.

Maybe he can be the new Bond instead.

What do ye think lads?
