After today's embarrassment, Is it time to give up football & concentrate on Hurling ? A small county like Clare is never going to compete at both codes. There is just not enough players playing either code. It would take plenty of time to convert the West Clare clubs but might be worth a try.

Clare should have given up on hurling in 93 after the embarrassing Munster final defeat and concentrated on football seeing as they had won the Munster final the previous year

Number of wins in this year's hurling championship: 1
Number of wins in this year's football championship: 1

My advice: get rid of both.

I Disagree

We need to keep playing football just to prove how bad we are at it.

There's no embarrassment in losing a match, there's dissappointment.

The problem teams from weaker counties have, is that when they win a match, the gobdaws in the media will start making them out to be potential All-Ireland Finalists straightaway.

Then their supporters start believing it, and it ramps up the pressure on the players and mentors.

Fine for you to say that to people like us up in in No.Clare in Lisdoon Ballyvaughan Kilfenora Bellharbor and New Quay where growing up we looked at hurleys as very exotic sticks that we had no interest in.We lived in our own small little world and enjoyed the various jousts between our neighboring parishes which ment so much to us.Our fathers and grandfathers looked on those matches they played between each other as the putty that bonded them all together. You want to take that away from those young lads. The thrill of beating our next door neighbors is what sport was all about when my generation was growing up not an All ireland medal. That was for people you would never see and only read about that played in the weireless if you were luckey enough to have it.The wireless allowed us to use our emagination. My Grandkids unfortunatly would never understand if I broached the subject.Too bad. They might see where we all started the journey and made the long road of life a bit easyier for them because thee old journey can be rough once in a while.

Clare footballers made some progress this year. In a county where hurling is the number 1 sport, any progress in football is a bonus.

Don't let the negativity take over. Stay positive and ambitious.

didn't the clare hurlers take heart from the clare footballeres munster win in 1992.

and don't forget the footballers got to the munster final this year, and beat Limerick to get to the final and were in the championship longer than the hurlers.

as for small county a team you can only put out 15, didn't stop Galway and offaly winning both over the years. plus yourselfs and cork are the only counties to have won both over the last 50 years or more.

what makes you think clare are going to be winning or in hurling final every year now.

Offaly I always shouted for you guys because my wife comes from there and thought it was always the righht thing to do.I will go to my grave never forgiving ye for what ye pulled in Croke Parkl in 98.I can assure you Clare guys would never have pulled a stunt like that and if they did I certainly would never be a party to it.It was very lousy and I will go to my grave feeling the same way.Ya, maybe we would not have won the All Ireland that year but fcuk it we won that match and Clare fans knew very well once this team had departed the scene it was gouig to be a while before we saw their equels again. You know I can deal with that,What I am unable to deal with is the smallness of the Offaly manager that went along with the program.Anyone that was at that match that day knew Clare were going in at full;time the winner.

What stunt did Offaly pull in 98.The fans peacefully protested when 5 minutes was not played at the end of an all Ireland semi final.the players wanted the game to restart but the officials wouldn't budge. With 5 minutes to go in the final in 94 everybody knew Limerick were going to win as well. Incompetent officiating cost Clare in 98 not the actions of anyone from Offaly

but sure if ye were that super of a team why didn't you win the replay, it was played in the home of munster hurling thurles.

we still had to beat kilkenny in the all ireland final
clare were 11 points up and we had brought in down to 4
there was at least with injuried time 5 minutes left in in anyhow best team won after.

that was a sweet year as Birr had also beaten Clarecastle in the replay in thurles also.

the only thing that was wrong with clare that year it wasn't waterford that they were hurling again we took no sh.t from ye, might have bully waterford wasn't going to work with that offaly side.

To be honest that was the main part of the plan that day, and like all great plans nobody had a clue (except yourself of course)

I don't expect the hurlers to be in a final every year now. That's my fu*cking point. In order for Clare to consistently compete against Tipp & Cork we need to probably be playing only one code. The county is to small, to only have half the county playing hurling. Otherwise we'll be in a situation where we might have a good spell every now and then and drift back to where Clare are currently. Only winning one game in 4 years.

but sure its not as the footballers are taking 4 or 6 players that should be on the hurling team is there.

so what you are saying give up football in clare and hurling will be the better, i think clare are doing great work at underage in clare and will have a good senior side in a few years under Davie.

are there will still be a senior football team in clare

Offaly could be given another another half nowadays and ye wouldn't beat Clare or any team from Munster.
Maybe ye should give up hurling & concentrate on football.

We're even worse at football than hurling at the moment

Your missing the point. I'm not saying that there would be 5 or 6 players available right away. In the future who's to know how many players would emerge from West Clare. If they were encouraged to play hurling & hurling only. Clare would get at least 5 or 6 players a year at all age groups. It would be a huge help in trying compete consistently against Cork & Tipp at all age groups.
