Just watching some of the olympic boxing there and Jimmy still commentating, what age is he now? how many olympics has he done?

Have to say was never my favourite commentator with the exception of the famous " different class" commentary on maradonas 2nd goal v england in mexico 86, has had some long career though!

You can have a sixty year career if you never upset anyone.

Sticking his head in the sand over Michelle Smith finished him for me.

Never had a man's sporting knowledge ever been so over played.

He knows he names of people who won big events but knows nothing past that, yet is praised as being the memory man in the press.

He was on some show last year and he didn't even know what Argentinian player was involved in the Beckham sending off in the 98 World Cup. Pathetic.

Yah very true, dunno when I was younger always had good time for him but as time has gone on have just kind of become apathetic towards him.

+1

Made a fool of himself on this issue. Seemed completely starstruck when alarm bells ringing for even most inexperienced commentators/reporters.

Definitely think the memory man thing was way overplayed and some of the world xi soccer teams he used to pick on the sunday world every year( maybe still does??) left a bit to be desired!

I checked out the 'Willie Pep' reference he casually tossed into one of today's commentaries; he might be past his peak, the bould Jimmy, but he hasn't completely lost the plot.
Diff'rent class, indeed!

He rattled off a load of 'small' Irish boxers who were successful in the Olympics. A couple of things about it - he included Mick Dowling who didn't win anything and forgot Hughie Russell. It doesn't take a genius to be able to recite famous small Irish boxers from past Olympics, it's not exactly a long list, it's just a circus act.

And he didn't cop that the scores at the end of round 2 were the scores for round 2, not the combined scores. He always struck me as being totally lacking in humility.

Lads he is 77 yrs of age...show him some respect please for his longevity!

He has his faults but it is brilliant to see him still commentating. If he was as bad as some people saying here have no doubt RTE would have got rid of him long time ago.

As for the Michelle Smith viewpoint he had, the fact still remains that she kept her medals and when tested in Atalanta the results were she was clean etc etc but that's for another day! Its not as simple as that!

Jimmy is a legend!

He's very old and can remember some things! Who gives a s**t if RTE are paying him to commentate on boxing and he has absolutely no idea what the score is? And he is dead right on Michelle Smith. Sometimes female swimmers peak ten years later then others, and have husbands with drug bans, and later ------- whiskey when tested, having been difficult to track down for testing during the relevant period.

Zafonic, not sure what age you are, but you must have been young and very impressionable if you thought Jimmy McGee was ever any good. This is the man who, in 1972 when he was 37 and presumably not doting, referred to Gert Muller for the entire wold cup as Jerdy Muller, a name thought up inside his own little head. He is nothing more than a museum piece, having been transferred from the county library sometime over the past 15 years.

As for whoever said that RTE do not get rid of bad commentators, try engaging the brain before you type your next post.

I was listening to commentary on the radio of Tipp V Wexford in football.

The commentator kept referring to Tipp midfielder George Hannigan as king george. "King George on the ball" " king george shoots" etc etc. Just decided in his own head that he should be referred to as king george. I think he thought it was funny or amusing. its was just annoying in my book

In fairness there's no excuse for confusing the scores in an individual round with the score for the fight as a whole as he did with the two Irish boxers' fights yesterday.

...not frgetting Argentina 1978 where he was the only commentator I know who pronounced Villa as Vee-zha
(and I thought it was GERD Muller)

I'd say it was Martin Kiely who was commentating on that. Hannigan went to college in Limerick as far as I know, so there could be a GAA connection there, hence the nickname. It's better than hearing "Star" every 10 seconds though!

To be fair Jimmy is sounding the worse for wear, these days, but he knows his boxing, and his is a reassuring voice.
Far better, for me, than some dull sounding youngster, or , God forbid, Peter Collins, or Daire whatshisface

Jimmy Magee made his name as a memory man in a time when there was no access to the internet etc. and you didnt have the same immediate access to records. The number of GAA statistical books compiled in different counties in the last 10 years or so has made all that stuff readily available and the internet is a massive source.

There is a website www.sportingheroes.net that gives loads of facts on players of all international codes.
