Have a look at the statistics. Ireland spends roughly the same percentage of GDP per capita on healthcare as the UK. Yet they have free GP care. Prescriptions cost a fraction of what they do here. By any standards a better system.
The USA spends far more per capita but has a grossly inefficient system with large sections of the population having no cover whatsoever. The market doesn't work.
And we underspend on healthcare compared to most European countries.
Why do we not have a proper, public National Health Service? Why do we not demand it?

The real reason why Ireland has such a poor health system is because 70% of the health budget is spent on wages and pensions. It is completely unsustainable. It's the big elephant that the Government is failing to address. When there is a squeeze on resources it's the remaining 30% that is hit while the wages and pensions are protected by the trade unions.

Got it in one.
The budget for our public service seems to be more geared for the people employed within it than serving the needs of the general public
