A neighbour a few doors down had the car parked up on the path yesterday and I noticed that he had no tax or insurance on the car.
I'd say the most he drives it is a short journey to and from work everyday as its parked up in the driveway most evenings and early mornings
Should I report him to the Gardai?
I don't really know the fella.

I am sure will get the moral police on here saying that you should and he should be locked up, we pay more insurance because of him etc etc
But personally the thought of reporting anybody for something like this would not even enter my head.

he has a job, as far as i know.
he's only renting the house.
if he hit me while I was driving i'd be annoyed.
I've mentioned it to the missus and we're undecided

Whatever about road tax, if he causes an accident and he's uninsured, what happens then? I reckon if was me he hit I'd be less inclined to think he was just a bit of of a buck!

Where i work, you could find anything from 5 to 10 cars in the short trek across the car park to the main entrance of the factory with out tax or nct, tis a killer when they can get away with it and i cant as i have to travel a bigger distance to work than they have so i would go through a lot more gardaí check points which runs a bigger risk of getting caught. it often crosses my mind to report the lot of them.

Sounds more a question of jealousy, than of public-spiritedness, on your part

You could always mind your own business. If he continues he will be got at a checkpoint sooner or later. There is a fund to cover people if there is an accident involving an uninsured car. The man is working, we dont know how tough he might be finding it financially but sure give him a good kicking while he's down ,

If the roles were reversed, what would you expect him to do?

This is a funny one. My initial reaction when reading this is absolutely no way rat the lad out and why would you even think of doing so. Then when you actually think about it I would never drive around in a car with no tax and insurance and if that lad crashed into me, I would be like a dog if he had no insurance.
I still don't think I would report him unless I knew fully his situation i.e is he just broke and will pay for the discs as soon as he can or has he no intention of ever paying for the discs? If it's the latter then fcuk it yeah report him-I'm pretty tired of large chunks of my wages going towards paying for stuff for other people who won't pay or won't work.
I think you should wait for notrealdan's advice on this though as he is usually expert in these matters but something tells me he is probably passed out covered in curry chips and batter sausages in a B&B somewhere in Galway.

Keep your nose out of his business, I'd say.
First of all, It has nothing to do with you. Second, you admit you don't know the man so I presume you don't know his circumstances. Third, I bet you wouldn't like it one bit if he did something similar to yourself and reported you to an authority over something (say the Gardai perhaps for harassment).

Wouldn't even think of reporting these. Not so sure about insurance. The "who knows what financial pressures he's under" is a bit of a cop out. Plenty of us struggling at the moment.
Would probably still not report him but might change if heard he was off to Tenerife for the hols or saw a new 42" plasma tv being delivered to house plus as previous posters said, would not be happy if he crashed into mine or family member's car.

I would say that you should mind your own business. You don't know whether or not he has Insurance. Having an Insurance disc on a car is not proof that he is insured and not having one is not proof that he is not insured.

Interesting one. It could be he is in the process of sorting it all out and waiting for the paperwork - so I'd leave it a week or so and see if the discs appear.
But driving without insurance, thats not right. If he flies into someone and say a woman and child are seriously injured then how can that be justified?

and it is your insurance policy that pays into that fund.
There was a multi million settlement paid out this year to a poor you g fella in Galway who was in an accident caused by an uninsured driver - who happened to be his mother.
I know the young lad needs care for the rest of his life, but it is hard to swallow when his mother chose to drive uninsured and leaves the rest of us to pick up the tab

Well, when you put it like that, that would actually be an argument for reporting him. If he is insured, all will be ok and no issue.

How's about you mind your own freakin' business.
The amount of people in this country that get their knickers in a twist over what their neighbours are doing but couldn't care less that our politicians & civil servants are wasting BILLIONS every year is astounding.
Then again small minds can only handle small issues...

I agree N16, he could be in the process of sorting these things out, so I would say give him a while.
However, this "mind your own business" lark would be funny if it weren't so tragic.........
- We should let a neighbour off without paying insurance because there's a fund to take care of uninsured drivers (where does the money in the fund come from FFS?)
- Road tax isn't a problem either as there are enough of us paying road tax to keep the roads in perfect order without our neighbour also having to pay.
- Someone down the road may have got a favour from a local politician to get a job/contract, but again, it's none of my business
- Damning evidence of improper behaviour by someone in authority (ye could fill threads on this topic), but, ah no, it's nothing to do with me
That’s for me is the crux of the problem, we are more than happy to turn a blind eye to some people in society with small misdemeanours (car tax, NCT, insurance) and then we wonder what went wrong when the larger misdemeanours (fraud, rape, murder) surface. Blame the government, blame the bankers, blame the priests, the guards, the public sector, the private sector…….
I'm alright Jack. It’s none of my ----ing business.

both tax and insurance were two years out of date, as far as I could see from the quick glance I got.
I should have made that clearer.
The lad doesn't have a family and is only renting in the house on my road.

It is all our business, if you don't pay the rest of us have a percentage added to our bill to pick up the tab of the spongers. I am not into reporting myself.

He is breaking the law, if you saw someone robbing a bank/shop or whatever, would you call the Gardaí ? If the answer is yes, well then you know what to do. But knowing this banana republic WHEN/IF YOU tell the guards, they will do SFA anyway.

Good point. Nod and a wink culture rife from top to bottom.
No wonder there was not one whistleblower at Quinn Group, PTSB, Anglo etc when Sean (either of them), Fingers or whoever were up to their shenanighans.
They'd have been lambasted as snitches trying to derail the stellar progress of a succesful bank/company.
The f***ing eejits out supporting Sean Quinn last Sunday pm will be the same ones moaning about price of home insurance here next month or getting upset when they hear of the next tranche of interest being paid re the bank bailout.

Bull, my good man.
Will people stop using "Larkin's law" to try and justify small time crime and fraud?
