Yes great stuff out of him. The Mexican he's fighting next looks a serious boxer though-he comfortably beat the No.1 ranked boxer in the world today. Unbelievably quick.

Didn't see the other fight but the Mexicans are never soft(in the pro game anyway), by the sounds of it he will have his hands full the next day but hopefully he can pull it off.

This Mexican is perpetual motion and John Joe will have to be really tuned in to beat him.
Having said that, Bernard Dunne is sure that Nevin will win!

Spot on rake, these people lost no money or negitive equity on their free houses and as our social welfare is on par with 20% of jobs id say they might be staying for a month out their.

John Joe has proved himself to be one of the top boxers in his weight division over the past 4 or 5 years so I'd be hopeful he will beat the Mexican and win a medal.

Watched his bout last night before I went to bed - very classly on his feet and excellent counter-punching. Can really mix the two styles, front foot and then on the back foot. Havent seen the Mexican fella yet so cant say how I think that will go. But Nevin yesterday was excellent and I thought he was much more ahead in the second round than the 5-3 score suggested.

Agree...Mexican boxers are very fast somewhat similar to John Joe.Should be some contest but trust in Irish coaches to adapt correct tactics to see JJ claim at least a bronze.

I was talking to a lad the other night who watches a bit of boxing and was saying JohnJoe was only 5'1" and 6 and a half stone weight.
Is it true lads?
Has anyone heard this before?

Dench, have you read the terms and conditions and do you remember the section on personal abuse?
I'd have little or no time for that sort of personal abuse lads, little or no time.

What was the story with that dance he did prior to his first fight?
He went right up to his opponent when he got into the ring and turned his back - right in front of his opponent - and scuffed his shoes on the ground in some mad gesture.
He was lucky that his opponent didn't smack him on the back of the neck.
Still, good win.

I wish John Joe all the best. Although I'd prefer if he kept his powder dry about winning a gold medal until he got into a final! I know he's young and enthusiastic and full of confidence. It's just that I'd prefer to see him concentrating 100% on his next fight. After that he's in with a chance of a medal of some sort. Hopefully my fears are unfounded.
God, it's fair torture listening to Jimmy Magee!

yes, hope he gets a medal of some sort and gold would be unreal.
he was desperately unlucky in the last olympics where he lost his fight to a countback. His opponent that day went on to win Gold.
Fair dues to the lad

Press the red button the BBC Olympics coverage, watch the boxing on that and you have proper boxing commentary.

Thanks for the advice, bike, but this is not an option for me as I only have the 4 home channels. I could probably find an alternative radio commentary though if I went about it - just as I often do for GAA games. There is a slight time lag but it's worth the trouble.
By the way, about your username - is it a reference to The Third Policeman by Myles na gCopalleen? I'm only surmising. That's a book I read a long time ago and must return to as it's a great one (in my book).

Well he boxes in the 56 kg category so presuming he's just a little under that that weight that would mean he's around 8 ad a half stone or so. As for his height I'm not sure but I'd be guessing somewhere around 5'7 maybe? I couldn't imagine him being much taller than that because his weight is fairly low and he looks muscular enough given his weight. Best of luck to him anyway for the rest of the games.
