Chick-fil-A restaurants across Northwest Florida and the country are overflowing this afternoon with customers showing support for the company president's stance on gay marriage.

At Pensacola's Nine Mile Road and Bayou Boulevard locations, lines stretched through the restaurants and out the door, where dozens of people waited to get in. The drive-through lines wrapped around the buildings and down the street. Employees were handing out water bottles to people standing in line. Traffic was backed up around all area Chick-fil-A locations.

The support came after former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared today national "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day." Diners were eating at restaurants in the chicken chain today as the company continues to be criticized for Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy's comments about gay marriage.

Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." That unleashed a torrent of criticism from gay rights groups and others, who have called for boycotts and efforts to block the chain from opening new stores.

Terri and Vern O'Connell of Pensacola wanted to join the masses at lunch and couldn't, so they sent an email to pnj.com editors voicing their support.

"We couldn't even get into the parking lot at Chick-fil-A. We had a limited lunch hour, but we support the company president's stance and will continue to eat at Chick-fil-A!"

A few protesters gathered outside stores to make a statement against the company. At the restaurant on Bayou Boulevard in Pensacola, two young men held signs reading "Don't listen to hate" and "God loves everyone."

Nearby was one demonstrator who riled people on both sides of the issue. He refused to be identified and is not affiliated with Chick-fil-A, but was holding a sign that says "Chick-fil-A anti gay" on one side and "God hates fags" on the other.

Many Chick-fil-A supporters, Christians and other passersby found the demonstrator's antics in poor taste. Marc Yu, who also emailed pnj.com, was among them.

"I found the protester's sign offensive. First, I don't call anyone that name. Secondly, God loves everyone.

Arc J. Thames of Pace said that the Chic-fil-A on Beal Parkway in Fort Walton Beach was surrounded with cars, and people were parking in other parking lots and walking over.

"I'm a Christian, but I also have close friends that are gay. For me this is more about a person's right, no matter who they are, to be able to speek freely. It's our right and one of the reasons I'm proud to be an American," Thames said in an email, when submitting a photo of the jam-packed restaurant.

Pensacola Police and the Escambia Sheriff's Office said aside from some heavy traffic, the events have been issue-free.

Police Chief Chip Simmons said the Bayou Boulevard Chick Fil-A hired an off-duty officer to deal with the crowd. However, the traffic has been too heavy for just one officer, and Simmons said as many as six officers were there to direct traffic in and out of the store.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Melissa Rawson said they have no extra deputies at the East Nine Mile Road location.

Opponents of the company's stance are planning "Kiss Mor Chiks" for Friday, when they are encouraging people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country and kiss each other.

In fairness a dirty job...but someone had to do it , apparently.

Why is this thread titled "Fat America"? Can't believe the amount of idiots over here who are even slightly upset by this man's stance. I'm not religious and I'm certainly not anti-gay, but the guy believes that the union between a man and a woman is the only viable definition of family as outlined in the bible, nothing more, nothing less. If you are of sound mind and logic, there is nothing to see here.

Some might ask why is this thread on this site? Who cares what a load of fat stupid Americans think but we seem to be kept regularly up to date on the local goings on in that horrible backward swamp that is Florida.

It wasn't just one man Yeats, and of course he's entitled to his opinion. But his flock who decided to make a big deal out of it in the name of their God. Sad really how religion can poison a persons mind. And in this case showing their support for a fast food chain. But that's the right for you in this country.

To the other poster, wow insult a whole state in the name of a wum. Aren't you marvelous.

You're right I apologise to all the Americans on this site-I know that not all of you are fat and stupid. I will also go onto the Florida NFL forum that I regularly contribute to and apologise to them there also. I will then start loads of threads about the weather in Dublin, disgusting things that I eat and other humdrum local events in Ireland as I am sure that all the Florida posters on there are fascinated by such stuff.
