The GAA is a non-party political organisation whose individual members may, of course, decide to take positions on a range of issues in accordance with their own personal views. As an Association, however, it would be entirely inappropriate for the GAA to become involved in matters outside its remit.

A few days late, but welcome nonetheless.

Inappropriate? Two former presidents of the association involved?

What do you want the GAA to do about them. Expel them?
The GAA is a sporting organisation it has no say on what members say or do in their own private capacity, it can only have control of it's members on GAA matters.
Are the GAA going to have to issue statements every time a prominent member says he is opposed to a hospital closure etc, just in case it would be seen as a political stance on behalf of the GAA.

Former presidents have minimal formal duties on the basis of being former presidnets alone aside from congress etc.
Hence we have a former president who is an active anti alcohol campaigner and opponent of alcohol sponsorhip of sport while the association continued to earn revenue from this.
I stand to be corrected but none of those featured at the rally hold elected positions in admin of CLG.
Though, all that being said, the inference of support by CLG is troubling , especially given the fine lines the association danced around immediately during & after the civil war here and duirng teh last 40 years in the north.
While being an avowedly nationalist organisation, with the exception of the period during the WoI CLG has never thrown support behind one individual or party as an organisation and has often tried hard to prevent an optic to the contrary being created , sometimes leading to conflict with local officials & croke park e.g. when seeking to avoid being percieved to be backing Sinn Fein over SDLP & vice-versa in the north

Is there anything to be said for another Rule 27?
