Following Paddy Barnes win tonight Ireland are now guaranteed 5 Olympic Medals at London 2012. Melbourne in 1956 was the only Olympics in history that we have ever accumulated such an impressive haul when Ronnie Delaney won gold to go wit the 3 bronze and 1 silver our boxers won at those games. Great credit is surely due to the sports council and all involved in securing such success. The targetting of boxing has paid off handsomely. Personally I think it's magnificent that we can hold our heads up high in what will probably be the closest we'll ever have to a home games. For such a small country we are making a significant dent on the medals table.

Agreed-great haul in the boxing with 4 out of 6 boxers winning medals and if Joe Ward had been there it could well have been 5 out of 7. Billy Walsh is a legend of a man and we are now one of the best amateur boxing nations in the world which is a fair achievement for an island of 5 million people. Not much else to shout about in the track and field but when the total funding for all of these athletes is €11m then the support networks obviously isn't there to compete with the very best in the world.

A fella told me tonight that Marty said it was no surprise, seeing as we are famous for riding and fighting.
I didn't hear this myself, so just paraphrasing.
Is it true at all lads? Would ye say so?

Seemed strange to hear Paddy Barnes saying this tonight...“bronze medals are for losers”.

Great achievement for Ireland. Our boxers are something else and have brought great pride to our nation as well as the horse lads.
The new zealand thing doesn look as strong now, they have 10 medals and their 3 golds are in rowing and considering they have over double the funding we have per ratio they arent better than us. Infact of New Zealands 10 medals ( 5 have come from rowing).
Also an interesting stat on Team GBs 48 medals, 21 of them have come from just 2 sports..cycling and rowing. They have only 5 in Athletics. Obviously they have targeted sports where they have a greater chance of winning medals a bit like us with the boxers etc.

Anyone hear Marty calling the Taylor fight on the radio today. I was cringing so much I nearly crashed the car. The schit he was coming out with "float like a butterfly, sting like Katie Taylor" was a particularly memorable line

We need a completely new mindset when it comes to sport in this country. Because of bean counters in the department, sports education is seen as a cost instead of a benefit.

5*
* one of these medals was won by a competitor who was previously stripped of an Olympic medal for breaking rules with regard to banned substances for horses

Taylor For Gold.
O'Connor and Barnes for the two Bronze.
Which of the other Boxers do you think will win Gold?
I think both might struggle in their fights.

Nevin and Taylor have been consistently the most impressive boxers for me; Conlan's performance in that last round against the Frenchman showed he's got the maturity as well as the class but I just think he's too young to gold
If he does, it will probably rank as Ireland's greatest ever Olympic gold

ya well said theface, until we give our athletes a fighting chance then we can expect them to perform miracles. likes of sonia o sullivan, eamonn coughlan and treay were just gifted athletes, we cant rely on talent like that to come arounf every 20 years or so. look how quick the brits improved from a disatrous 2004 to 2012 by funding and suporting their athletes. im not saying we have the resources to do as they did, but sports like track and field, swimming, rowing etc should be events for us to have potential medal hopefuls as opposed to total also rans as we are at present.
well done to the boxers tho, supe studd. we are the cubans of europe!

Think Taylor for Gold, Paddy for Bronze. I have missed the Nevin and Conlan's last 2 fights so I dont really know how they are going at the moment. Just been told that they were very impressive so they have a good chance of making the final. Who are they fighting?

One of them, -Nevin I think,- is due to fight an 18 year-old Cuban. The thing with all three who I believe will go one step further: Taylor, Nevin, and Conlan, is the quality of their footwork and their movement, as well as the economy of their boxing: very little wild stuff, such as we saw from the Indian tonight, or the Frenchman last night.
Thats the foundation for a champion performance

I was watching a bit of the show jumping yesterday and they said the Saudi Arabians budget for the show jumping alone was €40m. They achieved 1 bronze as far as I know and it was accepted as a good return for them. Just goes to show what the country is up against in terms of funding.

Just one question that comes to my mind and I abhor the taking of performance enhancing drugs for both sporting and health reasons: cheating is cheating so why is their not enough furore [and, no, there isn't ] about soccer stars openly diving without being touched in order to get a free or a penalty and worse still, to get an opponent carded or sent off??
Its rampant in the game but many posters here revere these boyos but get absolutely livid about drug cheats.
Same with the sports media.
I don't get it.

I'm delighted for Cian O'Connor especially.
He had to put up with a lot and his comeback is superb.

Based on the quarterfinal and semi final, I'd see Taylor's chances as no better than 50/50 against the Russian girl.

Taylor was holding back in the semi final and reserving her energy for today. The Russian will be tough but would reckon at least 70/30 in Taylor's favour. If you have to talk thrash like the Russian has you must be worried.
