Hi lads,

Im currently doing a bit of work on the house putting in a new kitchen in an open plan living area, replacing ceilings and updating lighting etc. I was thinking of asking the electrician to put in some speakers in the ceiling also.

I don't want anything too fancy. The room is open plan with a kitchen and living area so ideally i just want to have a radio/docking station in a corner that is hooked up to the speakers that will play whatever is on i.e radio/ipod etc. Only the open plan area will be wired up for the speakers.

Is this a big job? Can anyone give me a few do's & don'ts or recommend speakers?

Cheers PG

Well Paul, just a question do you have wifi in your house? and if possible does your docking station have bluetooth? Id recommend wireless speakers for the station, no mess and good sound quality. Speakers are pricey though but I find the sound quality very good, i use them for my tv and there very handy, have them behind the couch. Your other option of course is to install wired oldschool speakers which is messy and will need to be hidden. Given the technology out there at the moment I dont see any reason not to go wireless!

Yes i have wifi alright. My docking station is just a bog standard radio with an ipod dock so it might be cheaper to just upgrade this instead of going down the route of installing sprekers in the ceiling?

ya the sound quality off the newer docking stations is so good you hardly need the extra speakers. You can buy one which has a docking station CD player and Radio for a reasonable price in most places.

All sounds a bit 80's to me.

Put a nice surround system into the living room. Link it in with a nice TV/DVD/Media system.

But the kitchen, what you have is fine.

Thanks for the comments lads. I did a bit more research last night and i think wireless speakers could be the way to go. Bose do a good one for about €300. That would work out cheaper that the ceiling speakers and give better sound id say. Plus you can take it anywhere with you so not confined to using it in one room.

What about the hastle of changing or re-charging the batteries all the time, or providing A/C power at the speakers.
