Ballylanders best 15 from 1962-2012 is going to be unveiled at the Pattern. I've heard this from a few locals but there's nothing on the festival posters or anything about it. It seems to be a very clandestine selection.

Perhaps, SLR (or anyone else around South Limerick for that matter) would be able to shed dome light on the goings on in this neighboring parish?

First I heard of it,

Shoulderghost or LimerickExileInClare might know more,

I wouldnt know the older teams. John Meade, father of Mike the referee was on the Limerick team in 1965 and he will be a shoe in. Ballylanders won a South Junior back in the early 1980s and there is a video of that game around someplace and the likes of Paddy Fox were on that. Vincent Hanly father of Don played for Limerick in the 1970s.

It will not be an easy team to pick and these things cause war in small places. I suppose you would have to consider the guys who played for the Limerick Senior Footballers in the Championship. The three Murphy brothers, Kieran Callaghan, Connie Sweeney, the Banger, Ger Walsh, and John Kelly might have played for Limerick too back in the 1980s. Anyone else?? Stevie Fox was on the 2004 Munster Football Final panel.

Then there were guys on Limerick football panels that would have got League games, and guys on Limerick underage panels. There will be very few on that team that didnt play for Limerick at some level.

Edit: How could I forget the man born and reared in Apartment 44C, Main Street, Ballylanders, Co Limerick, the one and only Thomas Lee

One of those apartments behind in Cnoc Linge (Knocklong) too if I'm not mistaken.

And from your post C. Sweeney is a Galbally man! Shame on you SLR! Thought you wouldn't let your own fall into the hands of the enemy!

Would you believe a couple of us discussed Connie Sweeney the other night and how he was allowed to leave. He won two County Senior Football titles and became a Limerick Senior Footballer. I suppose it was cancelled out when we got the late Mike Sheehan RIP from Ballylanders, but at the same time, Sweeney should never have been left go at the young age he was at the time but he face didnt seem to fit sometimes when it came to team selection. Glenroe and Ballylanders graciously accepted him. He was still under 16 at the time if I remember correctly.

agreed SLR re picking all time selection from parish teams. potential for all kinds of fall out and near impossible to get an impartial selection

When I was doing the Galbally Club History last year, I learned of a Player of the Year award that used to be given for hurling and football every year. In my innocence, I asked why it was discontinued and the reason was that it was causing too much hassle between players, someone who felt entitled to it didnt get it. It was knocked on the head.

In 1984 there was a team of the century picked for 1984 and that also caused its own little problems. The real problem is that you will have 20 players who have a divine right to be on such a team, and you will probably have 3 of the greatest midfielders of all time who never played in any other position.

Yeah. it's gonna be unveiled on the Pattern Day. I still haven't a lot of details, though. I'll give shoulderghost a call when he gets back into the country on Tuesday. He seems to know most of the team that is picked. BTW, going on what I witnessed against Senan's last night, not many of that 15 are likely to make it!

Yeah, the team has been named and is as follows:

Declan O Connor
Matthew Walsh
John English
Mike Daly
Ger Walsh
Eddie English
John Kelly
Banger O Brien
John Meade
Johnny Murphy
Dinny O Dwyer
Mike Fitzgerald
Noel Frewen
Michael Joe Davern
Ciaran O Callaghan

Some subs were named as well but I cannot recall the accurately.

Overall, I'd agree with about 13 of the selections.

Some good ones in there alright, surprised Paddy Fox isn't in there and MJ Coffey, but I suppose with only 15 places it is an impossible task.

I presume John English, is John English now of Mitchelstown, I also presume that Dinny Dwyer is from Knockadea, and Mike Fitzgerald is a brother of the vet. I had forgotten about Noel Frewen when I listed those that played for the County above.

Can you confirm that this is the actual team chosen. Spoke to one of those on it, and its the first he has heard of it.

Moose,
Pat Sullivan played in goals for Ballylanders for a period in the 60s good but not spectacular, many others who would have given longer service and to be honest probably as good if not better.

Sth Limerick Referee,
I like your little comment on Tom Lee not that I'd know very much about him.
A Ballylanders team of the period in question without Paddy Fox is in my humble opinion a team without its key man.
He ,and a chosen few others now moved on to different parts, won a county minor championship with your club in the mid sixties when Bally had no minor team. Given the deep rivalry that existed between the parishes at the time that was one for the books ! Check with some of your older clubman !!

I have all the details and the squad appears on page 58 of the 600 page Galbally club history that I wrote last year. 1965 final was not played till 1966 because the pudding found out that when ye lost to Treaty Sarsfields, that there was illegal players or something. (Perhaps you might invest...cough...cough)
