Sky sports news are saying all morning about him being one of the few British golfers to win 2 majors.

Rte saying he is one of only 5 Irish golfers to win a major.

I wouldn't like to be in McIlroy's shoes having to decide who to represent in Rio in 2016. He is going to get grief no matter what he decides

Hasn't he declared on a number of occasions that he will represent Team GB once golf becomes an Olympic sport?

Hard to keep everyone happy alright. Was at the Irish Open in (Royal) Portrush this year and there was great support for golfers from north and south of the border. Harrington even said he couldn't believe the support he was getting, considering he was playing with G mac.

Bit of a ridiculous point anyway for two reasons. One, golf is such an individual sport that people tend to follow personalities as opposed to where the player is from.

Second, doesn't seem to fit the Olympics to have these multi millionaires playing at all. The tennis and soccer don't seem to work.

Well if he previously said he'd represent team GB and now has "2nd thoughts", would mean he is unsure about representing team GB and will more than likely opt for Ireland...... :)

Find it hard to warm to Rory, especially compared to Paddy, GMac and even DC.

Great win last night though and fair dues after the dip in form earlier this year.

As for the olympics, he did indicate that he would play for GB a couple of years ago but nothing definite. The GUI is an all island association so no reason why he could not represent Ireland. He has never been one to be seen with either the Irish or UK flag - distinctly remember he refusing/ignoring a tricolour when he won in Congressional. At best he will stand in front of an NI flag at Ryder cup time.

Agree with the above, certain professional sports dont have a place in the olympics, football and tennis been prime examples. Dont think golf should be there either. Would Rory be better off just not competing.

I think he should toss a coin when the decision has to be made. Anyway I'll have my tricolour out for him in Chicago next month. Tickets came on Friday.

I love golf, the olympics and am delighted for McIlroy, fantastic player.
That said I couldn't care less if who he represents in the olympics as I think golf should not be an olympic sport along with soccer and tennis, they are global games in their own right and have no place in the olympics imo, seeing the likes of andy murray with an olympic medal just seems wrong imo,the olympics should be left as they are. If McIlroy won a gold medal i would see no value in it -sorry!

edit to throw in wiggins, velodrome fine but not that...

Padraig Harrington wants both he and McDowell to declare for GB, thus allowing the Republic to send two more golfers to the Olympics. Makes sense I s'pose.

Does he though? I think he is always careful not to say one or the other, normally state he is from NI, have you a link to the statement where he considers himself British?

In fariness Mcillroy and Mcdowell do a good job dancing on the head of a pin that is non-politicial identioty in the north....however personally would have greater respect if either/both nailed colours to teh mast so to speak...I never have a porblem with teh idea that that some irish rugby internationals see themselves as british , equally in some respects I am even more proud of teh lads form belfast who have won medals wearing teh green singlet of ireland in teh past week than if they were from south of teh border.

It may seem like the ultimate sign of maturity in teh north would be when everyone there takes a simialr stance but personally I feel it will be when everyone there can be loyalist or nationalist and proud & for said tansce to be no big deal...pretending you dont have an identity or an opinion is the equiavlent of "polite conversation" topics that vaoid anythig in any way based on opinion other than weather ...irionically something not unknown in goilf clubs in the north.....

Maybe relay golf? First guy hits to fairway where second guy waits for ball, and so on. Missing fairway would be akin to dropping baton!

It's a shocking decision to have golf in the Olympics at all. Completely takes away from the other true Olympic events.

Q. Having experienced Carnoustie a couple of years ago, did it prepare you a little bit for the hype that's really been generated since you've started making a splash at the end of last year?

RORY McILROY: I think so. Obviously being British and playing well at the British Open, you know, there was a lot of media attention. I've sort of got used to it over the past couple of years.

Like what? BMX bike racing? Synchronised Diving? Rhythmic Gymnastics?

The Olympics have been a farce for years.

People should realise that Rory's Dad managed his local golf club with a predominantly loyalist/Protestant memebership.

The McIlroy Family have sensibly stayed clear of politics and like it or not Rory lives in an area that is technically part of Britain. He is interested in Golf and has to focus on that. An Irish Cricket player Eoin Morgan plays for England - that's the way it is in cricket.

People are fixated with - Is he Irish or British - he's both so who cares.

Back to Rory's golf -

He played unreal golf but as distinct from his US Open win, where he won it early, he played his best golf on the final day.

His putting is amazing - Dave Stockton Snr. is doing his job well.

Harrington, in contrast, is putting like a 20 handicapper. Surely he could get Stockton to sort him out - if he could put like Rory he'd win another major.

He's a great golfer but lacking in a bit of personality/warmth.I'd rather have any of the other golfers but you have to hand it to him.

Catholic, his uncle played for Armagh. However, he attended a prod school and seems to be more Brit orientated.

Reminds me of the controversy over Eddie Irvine's nationality - he was Protestant but he considered himself Irish, wanted a seperate shamrock flag to be flown on the podium and requested the Stroke City Air be played when he won races - the FIA regarded him as British due to him holding a British passport though and that was that.

I was at the Melbourne gp in '97 and noticed the ozzies were kind enough to put the tricolour next to his name in the pit lane. Proper order too!

Very tough decision for McIlroy, obviously being from Northern Ireland the pressure is on to play for Team GB, and when asked originally probably didn't give it a second thought. On mature reflection though he might be thinking about all the support he got when needed from the GUI and the Irish Sports Council, so not an easy decision.

Maybe he will play for Denmark, so as to avoid all the hassle.

From what I've seen of him, he comes accross very well. He has huge repsect for his parents who sacrificed so much to allow him develop his talent. He showed huge courage in the aftermath of the Masters Meltdown.

He always speaks well and is very popular in the US so he's good for Ireland.

I saw a program on his girlfriend Caroline Wozniaki and she has a great family too and comes accross as a lovely girl - Rory is living the dream and we can all share in his success in a small way as supporters - You would be better off to applaud the young man than form some silly prejudice.

He really stood up for his Caddie JP when an English Journo criticised him - they are great friends apparently - I think it's remarkable that one so young should be so balanced with all the fame and fortune.

Now if you said Tiger was a dislikable character - that I could understand.
