It just wouldn't be a sports homecoming without Des mumbling into a microphone. What a national institution he is.

An unbearable príck of the highest order. Even as a Dublin fan I can recognise how blatant his bias is towards his own county. Though, as others have mentioned in another thread, that conflict never seemed to bother RTE before!

How he has landed TSG gig I do not understand-he is barely legible and that simple, almost stroke like perma-grin he has slapped across his face is very punchable.

We have a massive amount of posts on this forum with scathing criticism of commentators and presenters: Marty, Des Cahill, Ger Canning, Jimmy Magee, Ryle Nugent, Brian Carthy, the basketball guy, commentaries in Irish.......etc etc.
Ye have seriously high standards lads and what I would like to know is: are there any good commentators who pass yeer high standards and how many of ye have done it at a high level yerselves?
Any top top commentators ye have heard at all lads???

Scelp a lot of the criticism levelled at these guys is fair. Getting basic facts wrong is just bad preparation and lazy research due to the fact that these guys know they have the gig regardless - it is actually one of the main faults of the wider public service but thats a more expansive argument. Ger Canning for instance makes mistakes week in week out. I wonder is he pulled in for review ever now and then and have these things pointed out to him? (No is the answer to that I would think). There is nothing wrong with accent or style, I don't expect them to be robotic but I do expect them to know one intercounty player from the other. Another example is once they learn a particular ''fact'' about a player they feel the need to to remind us of it every week. We don't need that thanks.
I'm sure most of us critics of them would be brutal commentators but that doesn't mean we can't assess those who are.

Just because people have never commentated before doesn't mean that can't tell who is bad or not. All the people you mentioned there are not great although Carty is ok. I think Darragh Maloney is quite good as is Daire O'Brien-hard to think of anyone else who works for RTE.

Anyone who doesn't have to listen to some of the sports bulletin presenters on Galway Bay FM are getting off light. There are 2 in particular that drive me to Xanax.

Timmy McCarthy should be gotten for more GAA matches. A poster put up a video of him commentating on a Limerick Waterford game a few years ago, really solid. Slightly more toned down from his legendary basketball commentating, but enthusiastic, knowledgeable and entertaining. Give Ger the boot, it's Timmy Time!

Whenever there's a sporting bandwagon in this country; look carefully and you'll see Des Cahill driving it.

I hate those two more than anybody.
Daire O'Brien ruined my Olympics with his sarcastic round up every evening.
Maloney isn't too bad, but makes way too many mistakes.

RTE need to hire a speech therapist for Darren Frehil, he can't say Tippperary... he says Tipewawii..
I find it remarkable that a guy can make it to the national airways and not be able to pronounce the words properly.

He can be a bit annoying when he does that stuff alright but when he is presenting or analysing I think he is very good, particularly on the rugby. Darragh Maloney is streets ahead of any other GAA commentator RTE have imo and I like the fact that he is quite knowledgable on a number of sports, much like the Off The Ball lads.

I get sick into my hands every time I see Daire O'Brien on TV. A sleevin fµcker of the highest order. The strokes that b0llix has pulled, he shouldn't be allowed on national TV, bar for his own hanging.

Mother of God, it's hard to please some people. Daire O'Brien's round ups were a highlight for me, collected footage which most of us had not seen and put a witty twist on it. Would you rather some mundane footage of some Irish competitor who didn't perform over their dicky ankle and a shot of the medal table. He's bit with Timmy McCarthy doing voiceover the dressage will live with me for a long time. Also, when he explained the sailing terminology to the viewers when Annalise was going strong comparing parts of the house to parts of the boat was good good stuff.
As regards Darragh Maloney, this guy seems enthusiastic about his sports but is shoved from pillar to post. He does his damndest when calling GAA games and does not take himself too seriously eg. predicting Nicky O'Connell would nail a couple of frees against Waterford and had a laugh with Duignan when it didn't happen. Darragh knows his football and did a fine job in Euro2012 when the Ukraine France game was delayed, impromptu discussion with Richie Sadlier and the boys back in the studio.
While many of the sports team with RTE are bluffers, this accusation cannot be made when discussing these two presenters. I don't know these people but I enjoy their work. Just had to reply to that post.

100% agree. He did a great job on that game with TV3. Brought the game to life and some non-GAA with me were far more drawn to game on TV with decent commentary. Vital aspect of tv coverage and RTE do Gaa, especially hurling, a continued dis service with their below par offering.

Inaccuracies are pretty much an everyday occurrence form the RTE Sports Department. Just reading a piece there from Jacqui Hurley on the RTE website. She states that Ireland's last Olympics gold medal before Katie Taylor was 20 years ago.

RTE reporter asked Michael Conlon this evening "how does it feel to be home?"
He's nineteen, he's been in London for a fortnight, I'm surprised he's back at all.
It's the type of question you'd ask someone who's just been rescued after 10 years marooned on a desert island ...or Brian Keenan, ffs!
