While there was some good parts to John Creedons program on Limerick city such as the part about the Gandalow boat, Moyross Regeneration and the Limerick Soviet, i personally thought that the coverage of the rugby was way over the top. Stuff like every Sunday all the young men in the city tog out for their local rugby side ect. was laughable. Club rugby defining the city and the other cliches. Soccer and GAA clubs are every bit as involved in their local communities in the city and imo are more parish based than the rugby clubs. While Thomond in fairness to them have young players from Moyross, Ballynanty and Thomondgate, their own chairman admitted that they also got players from Meelick, Ardnacrusha ect as for Young Munster and Shannon, they have very few underage players from their traditional strongholds of the Parish and the Yellow Road. Garryowen and Bohemians have them coming in from all over the county also. This Limerick city rugby myth has to be exposed for what it is, A BIG SHAM!!

We had a topic on this a few weeks ago, it was a terrible hour of television, the Cork one was on the following week and while it wasn't great at least it would encourage you to visit the city.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Soccer is the Number 1 game in Limerick City.

Absolutely! No question. Junior soccer of course for those not so well acquainted with Limerick. Season kicking off this weekend I think. Rugby lagging a long way behind.

Its actually laughable for those of us from Limerick who know the story. It has fast become the biggest cliche regarding Limerick. Rugby is actually fast becoming the 3rd Sport of the City. It holds little or no hold in the County. Bruff and NCW, probably the only 2 clubs of note outside the City, have players from all over, and though there is certainly a hardcore in those areas there is no doubt that they play second fiddle to the Gaa Clubs. Soccer is actually a bigger sport in NCW than Rugby, with Newcastle AFC and Newcastle Rovers both strong Premier League Clubs in the Desmond League. Soccer was always the no.1 sport in Limerick City, and any teacher working in or around Limerick City will tell you the fight back led by Na Piarsaigh, Monaleen and even St.Pats has started the swing in the Gaa's favour. The presence of the Development Coaches in the schools is working (just look at Old Christians underage now) and the kids in those areas are mad for Gaa, Hurling in particular.
3 Years down the line, Soccer and Gaa will be ahead of Rugby in the City. The rugby crowd will scoff at this claim such is the extent of their recently new found arrogance that they define Limerick City. They dont, and they will soon find that out.
Na Piarsaigh are the proof of this. In an area under the shadow of Thomond Park, they are kicking seven shades out of Rugby when it comes to attracting young lads. Na Piarsaigh rule supreme in that area of the city at this stage. The same is happening out by Monaleen now. The areas like Moyross, Ballynanty and Thomondgate will always be Soccer areas, not Rugby areas, but there is no mention of that in these type of shows.

Well said SS, you are telling all the truth there. Thomonds facilities are a joke compared to Na Piarsaigh plus they are struggling big time in the AIL. Nothing about Na Piarsaigh who are Munster club champions. Unbelievable propaganda being put out by the 'salt of the earth rugby crowd'!!.

I dont think anyone has any issue or any problem with those who support club rugby in Limerick. Fair play to them. It is the "rugby was only invented in the year 2000" brigade that riles most people

Ultimately that is one of the big factors that is bringing about the decline of rugby in the city. Back in the good days, AIL Limerick derby clashes used to bring major crowds, even outside of near-20,000 Shannon-Garryowen matches. The emergence of the Heineken Cup era has destroyed this. The money, the crowds and the best players are no longer with the clubs where the youth is developed.

The major problem which could affect Munster over the next few years is that should they start losing regularly which is a fair possibility and the crowds drop, then obviously so does revenue which will lead to them not being able to compete with even Leinster never mind French teams in attracting players. Because as much as they hate to admit it, a lot of Munster fans arent loyal to rugby and it wouldnt take much for them to stop going to matches. They could easily give it up as quick as they took it up

When it comes to limerick, showing Regeneration areas and rugby makes for fashionable television. It wouldn't do any harm to show Caherdavin or Monaleen to show the community work that is continually going on there, and acknowledge the work that volunteers do all over the city.

A lot of people have left go their Supporters club memberships and season tickets. Paul O'Connell and Keith Earls were behind the tills in Elverys in the Crescent over the weekend to try and flog away jerseys. I would imagine that revenue will be a problem

They will get under 10,000 at a lot of Pro 12 games this year. The interest just doesnt seem to be there in Limerick any more

Junior Soccer is taken very seriously so much so taht St Patricks are supposed to be missing players against Mountcollins this weekend because some of them are playing with Pike Rovers. They were hammered by Fr Caseys in the first round because it came 24 hours after winning the league with Pike. They have a few playing with Richmond and Thomond in rugby but in general soccer is the game of choice for City natives.
In fact I would imagine that there are very few City natives playing with the top Division AIL Division clubs. Does anyone have the stats. Of all the City clubs, I would imagine that Thomond and Richmond have the strongest representation of City natives and maybe St Marys.

To be fair it doesnt take a genius to work out why they are choosing Pike over St Patricks

Pro 12/Celtic League never really took off. Outside of the Leinster game, I doubt if there was another sell out since Thomond Park was redeveloped. However the key was that they had sufficient membership of the Supporters club and Season Tickets that had to pay for all Pro 12 games whether they travelled or not.
If the Limerick FC Bandwagon takes off and they become the new Shamrock Rovers in the next few years, Munster will lose supporters to that.

In the days before Pat Sullivan, the best players in Limerick would have laughed and sneezed at Limerick FC before rather than leave Junior Soccer. In fact some players left Limerick FC to return to play the Junior Soccer. Those were the boom years, though and I am not sure if its the same now.

Ah come on. Im not going to go through details of who is getting what and from where. Put simply, the recession didnt hit everybody. There are still wealthy men and women in every club. Plus every club has a lotto at this stage and a club sponsor

Its well known a good few of the soccer clubs in Limerick City pay players. Soccer is No. 1 in Limerick City, there is no doubt about that, forget this rubbish about Rugby. Its a media thing, it sounds lovely but its now a boring clíche. If Limerick FC takes off by getting promoted this year then people will see that. Munster Rugby was a fad, a social thing that a lot of people copped early on but an awful lot of people didnt and still dont realise its an empty vessel that is grinding to a halt. The Gaa in Limerick are going about things the right way. They are targetting certain clubs and areas and they are winning their battle. The success of Old Christians underage on the south side of the city of late is testament to that. Na Piarsaigh rule their patch under the shadow of Thomond Park and Ard Scoil Ris is now a hurling nursery and not a Rugby School like it was. Castletroy College started off as another 'Rugby School' but look at it now. Monaleen are strong underage and good work is being done in St. Pats. Limerick Gaa is carving out patches where they are passing out Rugby. This is well known as i said before among Primary Teachers who are interested in sport and working in City Schools. Its the Hurling these kids are mad for now.
Limerick Gaa need to get Claughan firing at underage again and also concentrate on establishing an underage club in the moyross/corbally areas, thats the next target.
Personally i have no gripe with soccer and am a fan and would love to see Limerick FC flourish. They have a history as a club. I also have no gripe with Young Munsters or Garryowen or any other Rugby club. However, the sooner the Munster brand is shown for what it is, the better. More to the point, there are countless Rugby club men in those old famous Limerick clubs who want the same...

I can't see Limerick FC, taking over from Junior soccer any time soon. They will need to do serious work to attract people to the Market's Field. The is a much better atmosphere for kids in thomond park than in jackman. Also, there is certainly a lot less people are playing soccer these than 12 - 15 years ago. But that is probably the same in all sports.
