How do people see this one going?

I think its a bit like this Sunday's match, they're too very good teams, very hard to call it between the two.

Personally, I think Kilkenny will sneak past them, I like the look of them this year.

Also if Kilkenny can somehow manage to get past Tipp this Sunday we might see a bit of spice in it as it would mean Kilkenny and Galway would be meeting in the senior AI final just two weeks later. What a pre-cursor that would be!!

By the way for those interested the match is on Sat 25th at 6pm. Venue is Semple Stadium in Thurles. I think the Clare/Antrim game precedes it (not too sure about the time for that one).

It has the looks of a tasty one alright. Fair amount of Senior panellists on the Galway side, presume the same for KK? Wonder though, if KK win on Sunday, will they both play cagey in the U-21 or will they go hell for leather.

Our minor team 3 years ago was the best we've had in a while imo. For that reason I'm hopeful. The fact that a lot of our U21's are on the senior panel however may militate against us. From my experience over the years it is very seldom that U21's who play senior for their county are anything more than ordinary when they play at U21 level. It's a strange conundrum but it seems to be a fairly general principle accross all the counties. The ones that shine at U21 level tend not to be the senior stars.

Of the Galway team that saw playing time against Cork you have Johnny Coen, Niall Burke, Conor Cooney, James Regan, Davy Glennon, and Jonathan Glynn. Almost all of the rest of the side would be on the senior panel like Brian Flaherty, Joseph Cooney, Donie Fox, Tadgh Haran, Jason Grealish, Padraig Brehony, Shane Maloney and Ritchie Cummins. With so many involved in the senior setup and competing for places in an AI final you would indeed wonder about how they will approach this match, it is the same management team as the senior side.

I'm on a stag in Kilkenny on 25th. Can anyone suggest a good pub with grub to watch this?

Galway side looks very strong but there's maybe a chance that having so many of them already on the senior panel may prove to be a hinderance rather than a help. A la Limerick earlier in the Summer against Tipp.

Someone on another forum put up this potential team although I'm sure they won't line out exactly like this. I think the only one who isn't currently on the senior panel is Daithi Burke and everyone expects him to make the senior Galway team eventually.

1. Fergal Flannery
2. Paul Hoban
3. Daithi Burke
4. Darragh Burke
5. Brian Flaherty
6. Joseph Cooney
7. Johnny Coen
8. Padraic Brehony
9. Conor Cooney
10. Jonathan Glynn
11. Niall Burke
12. James Regan
13. Tadgh Haran
14. Richie Cummins
15. Davy Glennon

I wouldn't think so, I remember him winning a Fitzgibbon cup with NUIG in 2010, I think he would've been 19/20 at the time, I think last year was his last year U-21. Could be mistaken.

Langtons would be an obvious choice.

Paris Texas or Kytelers aren't bad for a bit of grub. Kytelers usually has a good match atmosphere as well.

what's the deal in galway, what's their "intermediate" team based on? most of those boys are playing with senior clubs.

You're right. They used to select their intermediate panel from intermediate clubs of the previous year. but they have changed that recently and followed suit with most other countys to select members of senior clubs. So basically now they use their development squad.

KK still ol skool, it's based on last years intermediate and junior clubs excluding guys who were involved with the seniors like hogan brothers and paul murphy. there's a strong u-21 flavour to this years team, 10 of the u-21 starting team from the leinster final are eligible, whether richie mulrooney will be keen on too many of 'em playing a week before before the u-21 semi is another matter.
with tipp using the developement/u-25 template and winning munster and if KK were to lose to galway, it might be a case of "if you can't beat them join 'em" for the cats.

The name Burke in Galway seems to be our equivalent of Maher in Tipp.

Galway had that approach for manys a year and despite doing well initially, took a fair few hammerings over recent years, hence the change in approach.

Is it still the case that is a county win this competition, no member of that panel can play in the competition the following year? Or is that up to the individual counties as well?

yeah as far as i'm aware that nonsensical rule is still there, the logic of it baffles me!!

The Burkes were one of the tribes of Galway city so yeah they are all over the county.

Davy Glennon in the 2009 final gave one of the best hurling performances I have ever seen at any grade. It was a joy to watch. KK iirc were quite a bith bigger and stronger looking and took early leads in both halves, but the Galway lads got going and hurled around them. I really really enjoyed that match.

Could be Shane Maloney in that spot.

Galway took the lead in that game, 2 Ritchie Cummins goals in the first half. Glennon was good but it was the display of right corner back Johnny Coen that I remember most.He was excellent as were Daithi Burke, brian Flaherty, james Reagan and Shane Maloney.
