I am going to purchase a new tv to replace our old one.
I have a free to air satellite system in the house, with recordable box.
Probably 32".
After that, I'm at a bit of a loss.
LCD or LED? in terms of the picture quality and energy efficiency.
brands? is there any difference?
are smart tvs worth it? (I have good broadband)
any advice appreciated

I remember buying mine a few years ago but cant find the topic. I got a lot of advice here, but one of the things that was said that the contention? ratio would need to be high. I think mine was 40000:1 but there were ones on sale that were as little as 8000:1 at the time.

Actually purchased a new TV myself during the week. You'll find that a wi-fi enabled smart tv are pretty expensive at the moment and with the restriction on content that we have in Ireland I'd be very sceptical of it taking off. Netflix in Ireland is terrible, bbc iplayer and the like are restricted so what are you left with? RTE player and youtube?? You have that on your laptop/PC/tablet. Although through your Smart TV on the youtube app you might have the HBO channel which is fairly cool. All and all I wouldn't worry too much about a smart tv.
I ended up getting a 40" Samsung Full HD and Samsung Blu Ray Player with that Youtube app for €600. They wanted €660 but no way was I paying that. I don't know where you are but I got my gear in Harvey Norman in Limerick.

I'm in the midlands.
the wireless router is under the tv, so I can just use a network cable if I get a smart tv. if.
was in the shop yesterday and the salesman tried to demo the smart tv online functions - it was sooooo slow. So i'm very sceptical.
Budget isn't really an issue, I just want to get a decent tv that won't let me down.

Kinnity, What TV did you get? What's the reference? Are you happy with it, i.e. would you recommend it?

Samsung is the brand to go for according to Which Magazine.
Go for 40" LED - they take up less room than even a 3 or 4 year old 32" due to not having such a large perimeter around the actuual screen and picture quality is superb.

Could you advise a model?
I don't see 3D TV's catching on. I can see 3D with my own eyes. Probably too early in Ireland for Smart TV and could always get apple TV in a year or two.

I went for a 32" Toshiba backlit LED
Full HD 100hz. A+ energy rating, dual tuner etc
small frame, looks very compact in the room.
€440 delivered.
I'm happy with it.
same model is €480 on ebay.

Here is a definition:
The two main services of "Smart TV" are:
To deliver content from other computers or network attached storage devices on your network like photos, movies and music using either a DLNA service program like Windows Media Player on your PC or NAS, or via iTunes.
To provide access to Internet-based services including traditional broadcast TV channels, catch-up services, video-on-demand, EPG, interactive advertising, personalisation, voting, games, social networking, and other multimedia applications.

It's a 40" Full HD Samsung Series 5 LED TV.
The model code is UE40EH5000K
As Rebel as mentioned it's got a very narrow perimeter around it which in my opinion gives an illusion of better picture quality (whether it actually does is highly debateable!!)
And would you believe I can't actually tell you at the moment if I'd recommend it or not as it's still in the box. I'm not moving into new house until Friday so I won't have it up and running until Saturday when the sky guys come for installation. Although I may give a blu ray a go on it for Friday night. Keep me out of the pub. When I see what's like I'll let you know.

I had considered the smart tv.
As a tv they look fantastic.
but they are pricey (coming down rapidly though)
but after researching it, there is - all content you can use in Ireland. Netflix is s**te, and you have access to the RTE player, but outside of that? plus you really need a keyboard to work the smart tv and built-in search engine
It's much easier to browse the internet via your laptop & then use a HDMI cable to show anything on the TV.
