Anyone going to this? I believe ND are bringing 10,000 with them. Not sure if this is the first ever college football game played outside the us.

I think ND have played in Dublin before (not sure though). Rutgers, Boston College, and Navy definitely have.

There was an American Football match in Croke Park on the day of the AI hurling quarter final between Galway and Kilkenny in 1997.It was played in Thurles and featured a classic game between Kilkenny and Galwaty in which Kevin Broderick gave an exhibition, DJ was brilliant that day for Kilkenny aswell.

im going with 9 mates. went to the NFL season regular season game the first two years it was in London. this will be my first college game. Pity the Notre Dame starting QB Tommy Rees has been suspended for the game- setback for ND but they should still have enough for the Navy.

There will be a big audience tuned in for it in the states as ND have a cushy contract with NBC. Should be a good day. Not a ND fan myself but would always shout for them as long as they weren't playing LSU!

You'd think US ambassador to Ireland Art Rooney could pull some strings and get an NFL in Ireland?

I think most ND fans will be very happy Tommy wont be there, he has been pretty woeful especially when needed most last year.

In spite of ND's huge contract with NBC the game is on CBS, as its a Navy home game. Still should be a good advertisment for Ireland all the same.
Looking foward to the weekend myslef, should be a bit of craic.

Is it a night game to suit American audiences?

Ya I'm sure Discover Ireland will be very happy.

No, it's fixed for 2 o clock so it definitely hasn't been fixed with american tv in mind.

Tickets cost between 30 and 90 Euro.

And you thought the GAA were the only robbers!

Not for me I think.

i agree tOmmys stats are not fantastic but his win-loss ratio is quite good and he is definately the best option they have for QB at the moment. Jimmy Clausens stats werent great but he got an NFL contract although he rightly messed it up when he got his chance. Now 3rd choice afaik at carolina panthers!

Unfortunately ND have'nt had a quality QB in decades as they are unable to attract the top talent regardless of the history, size and glamour of the college. Rees had a promising end to the 2010 season when he was thrown in with 4/5 left but he never built on that promise last year. Dayne Crist is doing a masters in a different college so I imagine Hendrix will start.

I would love to go but I heard it was sold out. They are expecting 30,000 Americans at the game...(not sure if the teams are included in that figure!!!)

I've been to Tiger Stadium for an LSU game. Unreal atmosphere, 90k+ at it. The tailgating beforehand was almost as impressive. Never eat so much incredible Cajun food!

If you're living in Dublin it might be worth going to the stadium, you never know.

On the missions in Cork I'm afraid!!!
Have been following the NFL for years but only started watching college football last season thanks to ESPN America. Cant say I understand the system for teams advancing to the various 'bowls' but the games are great, good open contests, a bit like under 21 in our own games.

I dont understand why the tailgate for the game was not held in one of the venues in the RDS instead of Temple Bar. Usually tailgates take place around the stadium, after the tailgate ends there will be a huge crowd walking up Pearse Street towards the Aviva.

It is incredible that 2 mediocre college football teams with attract the highest ever attendance of Americans (mostly ND fans) for a sporting event outside of the US. For a college that lives on past glories ND are still an influential force in college football with this pulling power. This season there games will be shown on CBS, NBC and ABC as well as ESPN which is unequalled.

ND are a still a prestigious football program and that's not going to change anytime soon. They've always attracted huge support throughout the us. I can only guess due to the large numbers of irish americans and catholics having an affinity with them.

A few mates of mine went to a college game in Chicago a few years ago. They were expecting to have a big session of beer but alcohol wasnt served because of it being a college game! They were disgusted!
