Unfortunatley only one person i know namely the Irish manager thinks Whelan and Andrews are a better pairing, the mind boggles. Gibson is by no means the finished article but his preformance last night was light years ahead of what Whelan and Andrews can offer. Gibson and McCarthy would be a decent midfield partnership for Ireland.

Ireland should adopt 3 in the middle of midfield.
Team should be something like this:

Westwood
Coleman, O Shea, Duffy, O Dea

McCarthy Gibson Houlihan

McGeady Long McLean

Walters pushing to start instead any of the front 3.

Maybe but at least they can pass the ball, the other 2 lads are game but not in the same class, andrews was good in the Euro's but he's 31 now, time to look to the future.

Decent team but no chance of a decent team with Crapatoni in charge.

I dont like to single out a particular player but in my opinion Darren O Dea is not up to international standard,in saying that its not for lack of effort or will on his part.

Neither is John O Shea, at least O Dea plays with a bit of balls, O Shea should be ashamed to be given an Irish jersey again after his cowardly performances at Euro 2012.

Andrews was the only Irish player to come home from the Euros with any respectability, he had a good tournament and never gave up or dropped the head like most of the others. I'd prefer to see Andrews and McCarthy together tbh. Don't rate Gibson (even after last night's performance - he still looked pedestrian beside Phil Neville for long periods) and Whelan shouldn't be in there unless he's playing week-in week-out for Stoke.

Was impressed with Coleman when he came on last night against Man Utd. Had no fear in running at them and looked strong in possession wining a free with 3 United players around him. Unlucky another time to see the ball rebound off him when he tried to cleverly play it out for a corner. Have maintained that there is a lot of decent young talent out there that we can draw on. McClean needs to be nurtured and can become a great attacking midfielder and McCarthy well able to hold the centre. At the back, I don't have a lot of faith in O'Dea as of yet and would love to see Clarke get more game time at Villa to bring him on in leaps and bounds. Westwood also will need more 1st team football if he's to get the necessary level but the basics are there to make him into a serious international keeper. Future is bright if these lads are nurtured and play in a system other than 4-4-2. Trap has done great things for us but he needs to develop a plan B.

Was very impressed by Gibson last night. Surprised actually as never really rated him. Good to see him develop with regular games.

As for Trap, yeah when he brought on Green instead of Gibson v Spain was typical of the old fool.

Raging that he is still in charge. For 1st game away v Borats crowd I'd say team will be

Westwood
Kelly/McShane O'Shea O'Dea Ward
Duff(McClean) Whelan McCarthy McGeady
Keane(Cox)
Walters

Have the back ups there in case Duff and/or Keane retire before that game.

Any Everton fan will tell you that Gibson has been a terrific signing. I think at when he was at United many people seen him more as an attacking midfielder, playing behind the front two, looking for opportunities to unleash the rocket of a shot he possesses.

Since he went to Everton, we've seen his best position is as a deep sitting midfielder, breaking up the play, and playing snappy, accurate passes to release the more attacking players. His presence in the team has allowed Fellaini to have more of an influence in the attacking third, and it's no coincidence the big fella is playing his best football for Everton since Gibson joined him in midfield. He's also fitter and sharper now than he has been at any stage in his career as a result of regular first team football.

You would think that he would almost perfectly suit the Trappatoni philosophy on midfield play, but it's clear he burned his bridges with Trappatoni a long time ago, and despite what Trap says to the contrary, it's clear that he does hold grudges.

Walters is a must, duffy in centre defence ahead of Clark who is starting there for Villa. O'Dea is playing in Toronto FFS and you want to start him?

Andrews I assume is suspended for the first qualifier game, so James McCarthy should start in his place as he impressed v Serbia.
And we know that once you're in the team you stay in, so wouldn't surprise me to see McCarthy starting in midfield for the whole qualifying campaign.

I'd like to see Andrews beside him to add the graft.

Whelan's form hasn't been great, so I'd say his place is under serious threat.

Still a bit unconvinced about Gibson, Trap doesn't seem convinced either, though maybe if he gets a full season of club football under his belt he might improve.

good attacking side but possibly a bit open and trap will never go for it. maybe gibson where houlahan is and whelan as a holding player, esp against better sides. or push houlahan further up and drop Mcgeady, who has all the tricks, but rarely an end product. if they were encouraged to keep possesion they could be a very good intl team in a few years, but not under this coach.

I agree with you. Darren O'Dea is not a left back and it is a huge hinderance the fact he plays in Toronto. Just struggled to think of a suitable left back. Not sure about Wards defensive capabilities but he is decent when given the freedom to go forward.
Clark was an oversight on my part, he would probably start centre half (can he play full back) & put O Shea left back (not ideal as he is getting slower).

One thing I can't understand is how people have not picked Long. He gave one of the best performances of the weekend against Liverpool (bar a shocking penalty). He should definetly start although I do rate Walters also.

get Alex Pearce into the squad at CB. Bring back Reid- Steven not the other one!

Midfield should be a three. Mc Carthy behind Gibson (or vice versa) and Andrews. Duff and McClean wide,
Long upfront.

Then we would play some football and be hard to break down whilst against poorer teams we should play Walters with Long and 442.

Hope Carruthers, Henderson and Brady make the break through whilst Clark and Duffy, Cunningham develop into solid first team regulars. Plenty of other players out there with prospects too.

Goodbye Trap and things could be interesting in the future.
