For me it`s between Henry Shefflin & Tommy Walsh - both are on the greatest team of all time.
Both have all the necessary criteria needed for the title but I`d nearly give it to Tommy as I`ve never seen a team work their tactics to stop a back from hurling.

Have you seen every hurler that ever played the game?,if not then either you should close the thread or rename it ,because you are not qualified(not to mention your obvious bias) to make a judgement on the best hurler of all time!.

For me it's between Eamon Cregan and Ciarán Carey. Pushed to make a decision I would probably plump for Carey as I would have seen him in the flesh a lot more, as it were.

I agree with the greatest team of all time. Not sure about the individuals , there's so many greats that hadnt half the talent around them that these guys had . Eg if Tommy was from Offaly would je be still up there.... Maybe at best. There's very few that would . I'm sure Ring was he won AI on very average cork sides , Eddie Keher, Jimmy Doyle. Theese guys didn't always have great hurlers round them . But it was a different era , you just can't compair. I would agree that Tommy and Henry are the best of the last 20 years . I'd also favour Tommy over Henry given the option.

It's called an opinion, something you seem to have a problem with everyone else having unless they agree with you. Get over it.

Eamonn Cregan was regarded by the old crowd as being the one Limerick hurler who would have made the old Limerick team of the 1930s.

I dont agree on judging players from different eras because hurling has changed so much. Players that played in the 30's wouldnt even make a strong senior club team these days. And bringing it forward a few decades, TG4's All Ireland gold did away with the myths and legends about the players of that time. The hurling was slow and very poor compared to the current game. Different players, different times

Complete and utter crap.
Skills such as ground striking and overhead pulling have all but disappeared from the game. Very few players now can cut a sideline. You're mistaking greater intensity and fitness for improved play.
Best player ever is a pointless argument and indeed some of the greatest ever to play the game are playing now but to say hurling 20 or 30 years ago was poor is complete schite.

The first touch was shocking, The striking was shocking. The decision making was shocking and there are many more. And you might be showing up your own skill level by saying very few can cut a sideline. There is nearly a point scored in every adult game these days be it club or county. And they are also very common from u16 upwards for that matter

Pa Carey is regarded by a lot of people as being a better player than Ciaran. Ciaran was some specimen though and the very fact that he went back playing with the Intermediates in 2008 when others would have felt they were above it summed up his pride in the green jersey. I dont think anyone could say that Ciaran was not the best of the Carey brothers given what he achieved on the field. Pa might have had the potential to be better, but Ciaran picked up the MOTM awards in the green jersey.
A lot of Limerick hurling people would have massive regrets that Pa didnt play for a lot of his prime years. I remember the discussions about Pa Carey all over the place in the 1990s, and everyone wishing he was available to Limerick but Pa is the sort who reckons that the hurling became too serious. He was some hurler for Patrickswell though.

In my opinion Kevin showed glimpses that he could have been the best of the lot and he was who I was referring to. Do you remember the night he gave Diarmuid O Sullivan a tour of Bruff in the 21s championship?? He was almost unmarkable the same night but sadly things went downhill from there

There is a theory that everyone could take a sideline in the 1970s and the man nearest to the ball took it. I couldnt say either way. What we do know about today is that the best man for a line ball takes it, and is excellent at it. The rest might not cut 9 top class sidelines out of 10 but they would cut 3 or 4. Any side will contain a range of players with varying strengths.
The one player I think who could make it in the modern game is Joe McKenna. He might have favoured his strong side but with modern training you would imagine that would be addressed. However he could win a ball cleanly overhead when hurleys were flying and that is strong currency in any era.

He was picked full forward but if id say he spent about 10 mins in total there. He ran all over the place and won some amount of ball. He gave O'Sullivan an awful time of it

So I get slated for thinking that someone was the greatest of all time and someone who didn't play beyond u/21's is better? Strange logic indeed.
So before I check, has the thread title changed to 'Potentially the greatest hurler of all time?'

Henry Shefflin in his prime was the greatest ive ever seen. Joe Canning could well take that mantle though.
Ring is the greatest of all time though, obviously I never saw him hurl, but the legends about him and the fact that there is so little footage of him hurling make him an almost mytical figure in the history of hurling!

Either way, neither Ciaran or Kevin are within an @ss's roar of being the greatest hurler that ever played the game
