When I started in UL, they hadnt even finished building it. Opened in the Winter of 1995, its gone now, and I would reckon that it was refurbished at least once in that time. Sign of the times. The Hurlers shop/petrol station is also gone a good while now too. Surely Spar was profitable??

Surprised to hear this as there was always a good few in there any time i called in. The Italian deli next door(La Cucina) is a good enough spot to be fair. I think I'll start a thread to find good deli's, is there any around Limerick(like i don't know every one), best in my opinion is probably Bobby Byrnes on O'Connell ave.

I would imagine the new, far better deli that opened around the corner from UL has taken all their business. There used to be a grand enough looking dolly in the Post Office there but smiling or manners wasn't her thing.

That shop used to have a decent enough Deli before the newer Spar opened up. It downsized after that opened & became a bit crap. In fairness the deli in the newer shop was much better from the day it opened.

Wouldn't be surprised. Newer, bigger Spar only round the corner which has more parking, better deli etc, better location etc.

surprised to hear that SLR. In my time the Spar was always doing a brisk trade. Others have mentioned the opening of another Spar nearby. I suppose this is the main reason

When Spar opened it led to the closure of a shop on the Golf Links road at the lights called Seans Shop. Its ironic that the new Spar has contributed to the closure of the old Spar. That said there is a Lidl near Chawkes and I would imagine that the cheap prices there would tempt cash strapped students.

Sean wasn't too worried about that shop. He was my landlord in UL for a while. He had houses all over that place and a few shops in town.
That spar was probably the victim of boomtime rents and a tenancy agreement like most shops these days.

brought back memories. I started UL in 95. I'll never forget walking into an apartment over that Spar, thinking I was walking into a house party. I got the apartment number wrong. Myself and a mate walked into a house, me with a bottle of Baileys going "hey hey!!!", straight into the sitting room, and a woman sitting down watching tv. She roared at us to get out or she would call the Gardai.

The Spar is gone along with the loop the loop house in Elm Park.

Ah lads, nostalgia! Any more UL stories from the mid to late 90s?? Gaelforce10 will have a few. One of our mates hung a load of used johnnys in the wardrobe of some fellas room another night....
