Won't be a success unless Banner Gaa develop into a club of equal standard to Eire Og

Peacful would be a good description, after Eire Og challenged the legality of the UB teams, the County Baord was under pressure and hastily disbanded the Urban Board units and left a void by offered no solution to all the players and mentors who were then left high and dry. The CB don't come out of this saga with any credit, Eire og got what they wanted which was to be allowed to enter underage teams, this was only fair it frankly absurd that they were not allowed to train and coach kids.
The former UB units then came together and reformed as the Banner Juvenile and continued on to train and play, it was the only path available to them. As it happened it seems a better solution than before. Now both Clubs are getting on with the real job at hand, I was told by a former townie that Eire Og were disappointed with the numbers in the aftermath as 99% of the former UB players and mentors stayed with the newly formed Banner Juvenile.
The UB was made up of 4 units/teams, there were very different standards among the teams with some of the teams were well trained and coached and others were not. The real success of the new venture is that overall standards have been raised across the board, with better facilities, equipment and coaches are now available to the all of the former UB players, which can only be a good thing for the young players long term development.
It is a reward for the Banner who always gave positive support to the former UB teams by making their facilities available for training and games, it fostered an affinity to the banner pitch and club. Eire og took a different stance and decided not help or support the former UB with facilities or getting Coaches involved. In hindsight it was the wrong approach as it sadly only isolated Eire OG as their input was seen as negative one to the work being done at underage with the former UB units.
Large towns have unique problems that urban teams don’t have to deal with, there are several other sports available to kids and in Ennis number playing GAA were very low in comparison to the population of the town. This fundamental was why the UB was formed in Ennis the first place, numbers playing GAA in a big town like Ennis were very low in comparison to the total population, the UB was an outlet to kids who wanted to play both hurling and football and to increase the overall participation and increase the numbers playing games
The were problems in the past with number playing GAA in Ennis, clubs did not respond to the rise of other sports in area, numbers trickled away to other sports as the perception remained that they Eire Og just wanted very good players and given they had a huge pick and several good schools to draw from, the Club itself did not have work as hard to develop players or try to be as inclusive as it should have been to kids who wanted to play both hurling and football and other sports. A club only needs 20 players for any team, when you already have big numbers there is inevitably a lot of leakage of young players away from the game.
This is a common flaw with urban underage gaa teams with large picks, these clubs are in a very different position to the average Gaa club and it creates it’s own unique challenges. Typically in a rural parish number are small, each kid is needed even if he/she has average enough ability. Some of the average lads given time and coaching improve and become decent and some of them will probably form the back bone of the club in the years to come. Most teams are made up of a few stars, a couple of good players and most of the rest are average lads but every player makes their contribution.
With large urban teams like Eire Og where there are already big numbers available the "average player" is not valued in the same way. Inevitably the stars and stronger players get games and all the attention and the average lads eventually just drift away to play other games or even give up gaa/sport completely. There is no incentive for Eire Og to develop average young players when you already have the 15-20 good lad that you need, their aspirations are bigger, they see themselves as an elite team with elite players, this is part of the reason why Eire Og went into a long term decline, they had a lot of success but then neglected underage and their core values that made them successful to begin with.
The way the new underage club structure hopefully will keep every both clubs honest, kids have a greater outlet and choice to play games and that can only be a good thing.

Looks like snoop is back under a name - must be hard finding time to watch all the re-runs of Baywatch between leading the Banner to undoubted glory and talking trout about Eire Og - best of luck with it pamela/snoop!

The summary above is an accurate accounts of events and please if there is something factually incorrect then point it out. I'm sure that some of the home truths contained are not palatable for a few people, regardless we need to be objective if lessons are to be learned.

These topics about underage in Ennis always degenerate into mindless sledging. I'm going to quit while ahead on this one.
