And How Many Of "The Greatest Team Of All Time " make it in ?
1984 Centenary Team
1 Tony Reddan
2. Bobby Rackard
3. Mick o Donnell
4. John Doyle
5. Jimmy Finn
6. John Keane
7. Paddy Phelan
8. Lory Meagher
9. Jack Lynch
10.Christy Ring
11. Mick Mackey
12.Jim Langton
13. Jimmy Doyle
14. Nicky Rackard
15. Eddie Keher

The team of the Millenium in 2000 had Brian Whelehan at 5 instead of Finn and obviously Tommy Walsh has strong claims for the same jersey now - possibly the most hotly contested jersey on the team ?? Ray Cummins was the other new member on the updated team in 2000 dislodging Nicky Rackard from the edge of the square .
How many changes would our expert posters on here make ? Try not to be blinded by your own county colours !!!

Put Ken McGrath in front of his clubmate John Keane at midfield in place of the former Taoiseach.

I never saw any of those guys playing so can't really compare. All i know is that the era since 84 has been a golden one for goalkeepers, Reddin is under threat(Cunningham, Cummins, Davy, Fitzhenry etc). Similarly wingbacks with Walsh and Whelehan the pick of the bunch. I would find a place for Brian Corcoran, the best i have ever seen.

From what I've seen of the old match footage, hurling years ago wasn't a great standard.

I've watched All-Ireland Gold quite a few times over the years. I have to say the goalkeeping back than was atrocious compared to nowadays.

Cusack is the best keeper of the modern era by a mile, its not just his saves, he redefined how keepers play and how they can be the launch pad for attacks. Deadly, laser accurate with his puckouts. I reckon he'd take Reddan's spot any time.

Can't stop watching his goal against Waterford in 2005, the little drop volley. Possibly the best piece of skill I've ever seen in a hurling match. Genius.

It's all about opinions I guess, but I'd rate Cusack behind both Fitzhenry and Cummins, and possibly behind Davy Fitz as well.

This site is rapidly losing any dignity that it has left - you should be on Comedy Central ....

On the subject of Goalkeeperrs I'd agree totally about the standards back in the 70's - an example would be JBM's goal against Noel Skehan - if an under 10 let in a goal like that you'd take him off - mind you some of the camogie Gk's today arent much better - turning around to pick the sliotar out of the net before it even goes over the line ....

Kilkenny men can argue re 15, I'd keep Whelehan. No need to comment on 7.

Didn't a Kilkenny man lose an eye there years ago against Tipperary? Didn't the Galway players go after Ring in a hotel after a nasty incident during a match? Weren't the Tipp backs of the 60's named "Hell's Kitchen" owing to their particular utter ruthless form of defending?

Yeah, it was all about playing the game years ago, never about playing (or doing in) the man. Pure gents on the field they were back then.

Only person I would add to the team would be Joe Canning. Who do you take out of the team? V.tough one to call as although I have not seem them hurl in the flesh, they are regarded as legends in the game.
Maybe JC is not good enough yet to make it as he has not won All-Irelands (bar club) etc. But when he is fit and on form I have never seen a better hurler. It seems he has been around forever and is still a young man. Was consistently performing on poor Galway teams over the last 5 years.
On his day, unmarkable.
Tommy Walsh serious operator and would be in the mix alright but he was part of a magnificant team so it was somewhat easier. Same with JJ. Shefflin - slightly different. No doubting his sheer class and he epitomizes what it is to be a team player but I always felt he was slightly over-rated because he takes the frees. Don't get me wrong, he is one of the best in our generation but I do think he is over-rated. I hope I dont get lambasted for this becasue I do rate him highly.

Canning will almost certainly be worthy someday but for now i don't think he is ready to be considered, you'll get stick for what you said about "King Henry" but i'd be in agreement with most of what you said. Of course he is over-rated, his mis**t goal against Limerick was the ultimate proof if it was ever needed, still, as you say he is a great player and one of the best of his generation.

+1

I'd have John Power in ahead of Larkin at 11 though, and Frank Cummins ahead of Fennelly at no. 8

Tom Walsh from Thomastown, ...surprised you didn't know his name, he was a sublime hurler according to those who saw him play!

Henry Shefflin and Joe Canning would be there or thereabouts.

I think Damien Fitzhenry was one of the best keepers ever and was surprised he didn't make the millennium team, some of his saves were extraordinary, just have a look on you tube as a reminder.

I knew it was Tom Walsh, I just said Kilkenny man in place of his name to illustrate the point as I doubt many knew his name.

Didn't know he was from Baile Mhic Andain though, for some odd reason I thought he was a Bridge man. Shows you my (young enough) age.

Was he any relation to Ollie by any chance?

AFAIK they weren't related, but I'm not absolutely sure on that.

Actually, what about the aforementioned Ollie as goalkeeper of the Millenium team? As well as having lightning relexes he was said to be some man to burst out with the ball and set up an attack with a mighty clearance!
