Mark David Chapman, who shot and killed former Beatle John Lennon 32 years ago, has been denied parole for a seventh time.

New York State's Department of Corrections announced the decision today.

Chapman, 57, is serving a prison sentence of 20 years to life for shooting Mr Lennon four times in the back outside the musician's New York City apartment building on 8 December 1980.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Chapman has come up for parole every two years since 2000 and has been turned down each time.

"Despite your positive efforts while incarcerated, your release at this time would greatly undermine respect for the law and tend to trivialize the tragic loss of life which you caused as a result of this heinous, unprovoked, violent, cold and calculated crime," Sally Thompson, the parole board's "deciding board member, wrote to Chapman, according to a department statement.

32 years and counting. If it was here he'd be out in no time. We truly are a fúcked up little country in lotsa ways!

I'm assuming though that murderers of less famous people have been let out in less time in the US? No wish to see him out by the way, big fan of Lennon, but it's an interesting case that he keeps getting denied.

That's exactly it. 32 years and the man seems to have rehabilitated himself. A truly awful crime but it seems like he'll be punished forever. He wasn't exactly a poster boy for sanity when he comitted the crime either.

At the end of the day if others are getting parole for similar crimes and he isn't there's some hypocrisy there.

In an ironic way I can kind of imagine Lennon speaking out about this were he still alive and had another celebrity been killed. He would have been brave enough to go against the grain of popular opinion anyway. If Chapman had pleaded insanity he probably would have been shown to be insane and he sounds rehabilitated now. Then again it was a terrible crime.

I think ironically in the 70's John & yourwan did speak out in favour of prisoners in similar circumstances as Chapman is in now.

I saw a documentary about Chapman with the parole board being interviewed maybe ten years ago and basically they say they didn't let him out as he didn't show true remorse by his act.

John Lennon never got to breathe the fresh air again nor should his killer .
I think the USA with its strict penalties on serious crime sends out a signal that don't do the crime unless you want life in prison. Another thing they have right is if you are caught commiting a crime and are arrested there is not much of a chance you will be walking the streets 2 days later commiting another similar crime because you will be locked in the county jail with 25 other s****gs until the trial date be it in one week or six months.

I suppose the committee need to think if there's any chance he will reoffend. If there is doubt about it, and they think there is even the slightest chance he could kill somebody else, then it would be on their consciences if they let him out.

Well, after putting up with watching Paul McCartney been wheeled out for any fancy do in the UK on the tv, and making a bags of his own songs, as well as giving out that "Becks" wasn't in team GB, I do believe Mark Chapman shot the wrong man....

It's a long and widing road being in prision I would assume.

Since the beginning, there hasnt been a day in the life of Mark Chapman where he wasnt hated by Beatles fans everywhere. I'm sure he is in prision thinking to himself; I'm down, I'm a loser, I'm so tired but it wont be long before I am out of here. But alas, it will be a long long long time before this madman is released judging by todays news. Nobody I know has any remorse for him.

It looks like his former partner Carol will not get back her lover in the foreseeable future. Although all things must pass, it seems that this bad boy is going to suffer more birthdays in prision

When you've written songs like Michelle, Helter Skelter, Let it Be, I Will, Yesterday etc...I think you're allowed to have a few minor indiscretions such as the inane trivialities you've mentioned above.

Interesting to note the Belgians taking a much different view on early release. "MICHELLE Martin – the former wife and accomplice of paedophile and child killer Marc Dutroux – was granted conditional early release today, sparking outrage across Belgium." Not sure I would agree with that one.

it should be about not giving the others the parole they get, not about granting Chapman parole because of them

John Lennon lyrics to Attica State (1971)

What a waste of human power
What a waste of human lives
Shoot the prisoners in the towers
Forty-three poor widowed wives

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State

Media blames it on the prisoners
But the prisoners did not kill
"Rockefeller pulled the trigger"
That is what the people feel

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State

Free the prisoners, jail the judges
Free all prisoners everywhere
All they want is truth and justice
All they need is love and care

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State

They all live in suffocation
Let's not watch them die in sorrow
Now's the time for revolution
Give them all a chance to grow

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State

Come together join the movement
Take a stand for human rights
Fear and hatred clouds our judgment
Free us all from endless night

Attica State, Attica State,
We're all mates with Attica State

Attica State, Attica State,
We all live in Attica State

Attica State, Attica State,
Attica, Attica, Attica State

I suspect the Gardai knew from very early on in this investigation who they were going to arrest.

Arrested by appointment with solicitor in tow, apparently. Well if it's good enough for the bankers ...!

Is that why crime rates in the USA are so low...?

Michael McDonagh, the husband of Jacqueline McDonagh -- the mother-of- three found dead in her Co Louth home in the early hours of Wednesday morning -- has appeared in court charged with her murder.

The 33-year-old, from College Manor, Dundalk, who is a bare-knuckle boxer, was brought before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court yesterday afternoon.

Detective Garda Joe Ryan told the court that when he arrested and charged the defendant at 11.15pm on Friday night, McDonagh replied: "I didn't mean to kill her, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to kill anybody."

Judge Denis McLoughlin remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill District Court next Friday.
