Every time Clare have qualified for an all ireland hurling final since 2002 Kilkenny have been the oposition, senior 2002 u 21 2009 minor 2010 intermediate 2011. This should be a cracker with contrasting styles of play . It would be interesting to see who the neutral posters fancy to win . Both teams have had all their games shown live on TG4 .

Clare played Kilkenny twice in challenge matches this year and put a serious amount of goals past them running out handy winners. The same happened with the minors in 2010 but when it came down to the task at hand in the All Ireland Final Kilkenny came out on top.
Most of our players in Clare would be somewhat familiar with the Kilkenny lads as a result. I'm sure Moloney and O'Connor will come up with a decent plan with the first one being to swarm the full back line to deny any goal threat.
Could be a cracker of a game.

On the basis of Clare's win over Tipp against Kilkenny's win over Galway, you can take it that Kilkenny will be favourites on the day, I would say.

We dished out a fair hiding to them in May but that counts for nothing. KK were exceptionally impressive on Saturday, their finishing was as clinical as you will see from a KK side. This will be the 4th Clare vs KK Final in 4 years - surely obnly a matter of time before the 2 meet in the senior decider.
After blowing Waterford out of it in Ennis, we stuttered to victory over Tipp and were professional against Antrim without being overly clinical. KK, have done it all against tough opposition and have been very impressive.
Should be a great game of hurling - KK will go off as favourites basedon what they did to galway. Should be close though - and hopefully a good Clare crowd will travel.

actually my memory is that the sides played three challenges at minor in 2010 and kilkenny won two narrowly and the other was a draw. thus many clare people who knew this felt that the team would have a right crack at the final, whilst the bookies had the cats as unbackable favourites.

Will need a strong ref for this. KK absolutely "gave it" to Galway on Sat and ref did nothing about it. KK goalie gave away two penalties in a 5 minute spell and ref and umpires baulked. The amount of times a Galway man was fouled in possession was unbelievable. Tapping with the hurley on the arms, hands and shoulders went on unpunished for the first 20 minutes. This will have to be stopped as it is now been seen as a "legitimate" part of the game and being put down as "physicality"

Clare started this carry on in 1998 and paid a heavy price KK seem to be able to get away with it at every level, but Sat was the most obvious. The ref couldn't live with the pace of the game and bottled 50% of the calls.

If this continues some young player will take the law into his own hands and there will be a serious incident.

I heard that TG4 mentioned during the semi finals at the weekend that the venue is Thurles and a 5pm throw in.

Not certain where you are getting this notion of most kk players in their final yeat at this grade. As far as i can tall four are overage for next year. Dylan Walsh, Jason Corcoran, Willie Phelan, Brian Kennedy, Luke Harney, Ollie Walsh, Padraig Walsh, Kevin Kelly, John Power, Cillian Buckley and Ger Aylward are all underage for next year, im not implying there is anything to be made of that, Limerick had a lot of players from last years team underage for this year and it didnt work out. I am just pointing out that this is quite a young KK team who would have been expected to be stronger next year. I feel that both teams have exceptional sets of forwards in particular and this could be the game of the year, weve seen excellant score by both teams in their matches so far and i think this could almost turn into a shootout between the two forwards lines. i can see this being how scoring and i dont think there will be much in it at the end

Its essentially the All Ireland Minor pairing from 2 years ago with a few more on either side - wouldnt be surprised to see the same U21 Final next year.

The Intermediate Final between Tipperary & Kilkenny is fixed for 6.00pm this Saturday in Semple Stadium. Maybe that is the game they mentioned?

The U21 final is usually a week or so after the Senior final.

Agreed, it has all the makings of a classic final, know both of these teams will be the forerunners for next years championship, however the unpredictability of youth and the cut-throat nature of the u21 championship means that a lot of things could go awry by between next May and next September

@ N16

I don't mean to knock a genuine Clare supporter but I think you are being very naive if you think it is only a matter of time before Clare and Kilkenny meet in a senior decider.

The reality is that Clare have not won a MSHC match since 2008. Bar the game against Dublin, when the opposition totally collapsed in the second half, it is a long time since Clare have been competitive at senior level.

The lucky few who do manage to break onto the team and hold a position down will be charged with carrying the burden of leadership from an early. In Limerick, Galway, Tipperary (despite the recent critiscm) and Kilkenny the young players have established leaders at this present time to look up to whereas Clare simply havent filled that void.

Of the successful U21 team of 2009, only John Conlon, Nicky O'Connell, Domhnall O'Donovan and Cian Dillon have gone onto to hold regular positions with the seniors while much of the rest of team are mere benchwarmers or else consigned to the scrapheap.

The Intermediate success last year gave Daire Keane a platform to show his worth with the seniors but time will tell if that promise will be delivered. Its doubtful any one else from that team will make the step-up.

A number of the 2010/2011 minors have been parachuted in (prematurely in my view) to senior championship hurling but, while skill levels seem to be high, questions remain as to whether they will have the physicality to cope with seasoned inter-county seniors (in the mould of Kieran Joyce and Jackie Tyrrell) in time to come.

I hope you are right N16 but in my view, Clare are a long, long way off September Sunday's at senior level and have a huge task in 2013 to:

a) sustain Division 1 status in the league

b) become competitive at championship level by winning a match in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

We're not there yet badger but surely only a matter of time. We have been in the last 3 minor AI smei-finals, 4 of the last 5 Munster U21 Finals, 2 of the last 4 AI U21 Finals. Our senior team against Limerick in the championship had 4 lads just out of minor. It has to count for something - these young lads fear nothing in Munster or beyond. In 2 years I fully expect us to be a match for anyone. And if we are not, then we will only have ourselves to blame.

Having successful underage teams definately counts for a lot N16, no doubt about it, but Galway, Tipperary and Kilkenny have been putting out successful underage teams packed with skillful players for the last 10-15 years. As someone posted in another thread, Clare will have to start producing teams of this level consistently before it is to have an impact at senior level.

However, in my opinion it will take 5 years for the Clare Senior Hurling team to become a force at senior level once again. Our supporters have taken a bit of pain to date and I feel they will have to take a little bit more. I think patience is required from the Clare public and by the end of this decade we may have the trophies and medals to show for it.

But to say that in two years time we will be a match for anyone is a bit premature. In my opinion there are a lot of positions to be settled in almost every line of the field next year, therefore the league is absolutely crucial to our progress. If by this time next year Clare emerged with a settled team playing a consistent brand of hurling, I think most supporters would be pleased. As Fitzgerald himself would say, we are still in the very early stages of forming a team at this level.

i dont agree with this.. this talk of 2, 3 or even 5 years time is bulls**t look at the present clare team... next year both bugler and donnellan will be 28 (they are both very good hurlers) o donovan and dillon will be 25 and o connell, conlon, collins will be 24.. honan will be 23. even conor mcgrath will be in his third year and out of u21 grade..the likes of seadna morey, tony kelly, colm galvin and aaron cunningham should be better for the experience of this year.. they should be looking to at least win munster next year..

Clare have established players besides John Conlon, Nicky O'Connell, Domhnall O'Donovan and Cian Dillon. Lads like Donnelan, Vaughan, Buglar, Conor McGrath. Honan also ...he has not been fit for 2 years. I reckon he'll be a different prospect next year.

Bottom line, unlike the 2009 team, it's not a case of the current u21's being thrown to the lions. They will be complimenting what's there already. That said, surviving Division 1 will be a challenge.
