Nothing underhand in Tipp tactics - Walsh
By Cliona Foley
Tuesday August 28 2012

KILKENNY star Tommy Walsh says he doesn't believe there was a deliberate effort by Tipperary to get him sent off in the All-Ireland semi-final.

The Premier County came in for heavy criticism for giving star forward Lar Corbett an unprecedented marking job to do on the Tullaroan wing-back, which he persisted with, even though he was himself being marked by JJ Delaney and Walsh had been tasked with marking Pa Bourke.

There was speculation that Tipp had done this partly in an attempt to get Walsh to pick up yellow cards, and he did get one in the early minutes.

But Corbett has already firmly denied this in his Irish Independent column, and Walsh says he does not believe that Tipperary had deliberately set out to test his discipline.

"I don't think anyone ever really tries to get anyone sent off in hurling," he said, stressing that the sport's inter-county elite know each other particularly well.

"We all meet each other so often at functions and different trips and that.

"While we're on the field, obviously we're trying to beat our man, but everyone gets on very well off the field.

"If a lad gets a belt he gets straight back up. That's the way it's been, that's the tradition and that's what your supporters like, that you go out and do your best."

Walsh said the real litmus test of what is acceptable in the modern game comes from club elders, who will not stand for any play-acting or injury-feigning.

"All they want is hurling, hurling, hurling and when they see things like that creeping into soccer, they don't like that," Walsh said.

"I think if you go back over the last 10 to 20 years, when a hurler gets a belt, 99 times out of 100 he just gets straight back up and gets on with it. That's the way it is at the moment and hopefully it continues that way."

That's the reality of it, and fair dues to Tommy for calling it like all true hurling folk know it to be!

I wouldn't worry, there will be plenty on here with a different angle on it..find it hard to acknowledge the truth!

Fair play to him.

A decent skin is Tommy, tough man when he crosses the white line but i'd love a few more like him on the Tipp team.

What happens on the field should always stay on the field and Tommy points that out perfectly.

God that's nauseating... the kk mafia are really going on a charm offensive here for Barry Kelly.. that's cody and now Walsh. What's next shefflin talking about how he likes to chat to the ref during games about the price of weanlings .. I thought Walsh only did one interview a year. Surely he didnt waste it on this drivel.

I don't think I was ever at a match before the KK vs Tipp semi that was being talked about over a week later that includes any All Irelands I've been to. Tommy said what he is expected to say but fans at the match be they KK or Tipp know what went on. The ref was should have not issued one singal card in those opening minutes, when he was booking Tommy, Lar should have also being booked this would have changed the game IMO. Lar might have copped on a bit and concentrated on hurling instead Lar celebrated Tommy's booking with a jump that wouldn't have been out of place in London a few weeks back. No doubt people will be on here later twisting Tommy's words or taking what he said out of context and making some ridiculous arguement like they did with what Brian Cody said yesterday. But begrudgery and jealousy will get people nowhere.

Well fair play to you, implying that you are fit to criticise probably the greatest hurler there ever was, who is a member of a team which unquestionably is the greatest ever in the history of the game.

God, there'l be no talking to you at all when you and your pals learn to walk upright.

With all the media interest in Kilkenny at the moment,I would think that Anthony Cunningham is loving this.It helps to keep the spotlight off the Galway lads.Thank God McIintyre is not manager this year.He would be giving interviews all over the place.

Between now and the Hurling final the GAA should erect a statue of Tommy Walsh outside Croke Park where we all can gather and pay homage. Then on All Ireland final day the Galway players should form a Guard of Honour and applaud the greatest team in living memory onto the pitch. Would that be enough?

No statues or journalistic plaudits are required.

FACTS and hurling victories speak for themselves, Kilkenny 2000 - 2011 have set records that will take some beating (if ever).

(The kettle is well boiled dry with some posters here, they are consumed by Kilkenny / Cody / T. Walsh / Shefflin etc)

All Tommy is saying is that in the unlikely event were he to accidently lamp someone on Sept 9th that he expects them to hop up straight away and not be trying to get him sent off. Sure didn't Brian Gavin make nothing of it last year when Tommy's stray hurl made accidental contact with his head. Sure tis hurling and the odd stray hurl to the hand, leg, head is to be expected and sure don't lads get on great off the field anyway.
Kilkenny lads doing a lot of talking before a final, when was the last time we saw that?

You are probably right, sure isn't that exactly what Tommy did when he was lamped in the AI final, just jumped straight back up,never made any attempt to get the player sent off (he was obviously) and continued to hurl.

The next year Tipp purposely kept the ball away from him and won.

To be fair it was press night the other night and so the journalists would have got their few quotes and it is hardly a rake of Kilkenny quotes.

As for Tommy and Brian Gavin. Wasn't he only swatting a wasp that looked as if he might sting poor Brian? Tommy was saving him.

Would you be able to go easy on us unlike the leinster final and not take an unassailable lead into half time? I'd prefer that to the auld statues and guards of honour stuff.

Let them off, your wasting your time explaining anything here.....it doesn't fit in with the paronoia on here over the 'Spectre' organisation that's fronted by Cody that's trying to take over the hurling world.

What water are you talking about? The Nore? Or is it the case that you assume the word soccer can only mean English Premiership soccer and that there is no life outside of Britain?

Tommy Walsh and all of his KK teammates are a credit to the GAA to their county and themselves. It has been a privilege indeed to watch the greatest hurling team I have ever seen play this beautiful game.Still and all this will not stop me from shouting on the Tribesmen in two weeks though.
