Lightning quick Irishman Smyth breaks Paralympic 100m record

Ireland's Jason Smyth produced a performance training partner Tyson Gay would have been proud of by retaining his Paralympic 100 metres title in a new world record.

The 25-year-old, who has trained alongside the joint second fastest man in history in Florida over the last three winters, raced away from the rest of the field to take the T13 crown in 10.46 seconds.

The fastest Paralympian in the world spread his arms wide in celebration as he crossed the line, winning by a margin not even Usain Bolt is accustomed to.

Absolute legend this guy is. Has run a 10.22 in able bodied competition before, narrowly missing the Olympipc Games qualification by 0.04 of a second. He's odds on to win Gold in the T13 200m later in the Games also. Best of luck to him.

Big congrats to Michael McKillop, Darragh McDonald and Bethany Firth; our other Gold medalists so far in these Games.

Not into Paralympics at all, I'm afraid, murray
You can admire all these lads and lasses but I just feel there's too much patronising of the participants, and I would never enjoy watching them as I would a Usain Bolt
Or even a Ben Johnson

Dissability or not, does this make him the fastest Irish man around at the moment??

Paul Hession pipped him by 0.01 of a second in the national championships earlier in the year. Hession also has 0.04 of a second on him when you compare PB's (10.18 he set in Vaasa back in 2007). Both wonderful athletes though and a credit to the nation.

Talking in terms of 200m Hession's PB is 20.30 and Smyth has posted 20.49.

Im fascinated by this guy, I wont lie, id never heard of him before tonight. Is there any reason why wih a bit more funding/training he couldn't be competing in both olympic and par olympic games?

I thought he tried to qualify for the July Olympics but his best time for qualification did not meet it.
Great stuff from him.

You're right. After the 08 paralympics where i think he won gold in both the 100 and 200 metres, he said his goal was to qualify for both the Olympics and Paralympics in London. Unfortunately his qualifying time was short by 0.04 seconds.

Strangely enough the world record he set yesterday is over .2 of a second slower than his personal best.

Genuine question here lads, could he run any faster if he had enough eyesight to make him ineligible?
