I thought the game only really picked up from the middle of the 2nd half up to this I was dissappointed. Backs on top up to this. Really enjoyed the final quater though. Great win for Waterford and genuine joy at the final whistle which was great to see.

Guy over at kilkenny cats claim that Waterford got 5 points from 5 very soft frees.

I thought the ref was fairly unbias. Was fairly active with the whistle though. Didn't leave the game flow at all.

Savage amount of rooting around on the ground too.

Well done WD, good to see somebody outside the big 2 winning it.
Only saw the end of the first half & all second half, and it looked for a long time that KK were going to run away with it (KK had some incredible wides during their period of domination), but fair play to WD when it was put up to them they came through, very similar to what DLS did in Harty & AI finals. Great performances from the half-back line, particularly McGrath & Kearney (who looks a right find)

I actually thought he left a lot go! Just shows everyone takes different opinions at games! Thought a lot of referees would have blwon up at a lot of those tussles for a throw ball. Thought he did an ok job and didnt sway either way. You'd know Shefflin had been out of training for a while, touch was poor at times and missed frees he'd put over in his sleep. Fair play to Waterford for lifting themselves for the last 5 minutes, thought KK would do it coming to the end and it'd be another Waterford spirited battle with no end result.

Have Waterford finally found a defense good enough to win an All Ireland. Prendergast at fullback and Kearney are huge additions.Murray is still a disaster at wingback.
Mulomphy was v impressive, without scoring. Eoin Kelly and Dan Shanahan were off the pace of the game from start to finish. But v lucky not to have been substituted.

Ken McGrath MOTM??? Why. Surely it was between Kearney and Seamus Prendergast.
It will be interesting to see how they handle the pressure and expectation that comes with winning the League. Will it be the monkey off the back?

For the third match in a row, Waterford find themselves within touching distance of victory in a knockout match - and on each occasion they closed out the deal. All against the Big Three, no less. Well done to all concerned, work tomorrow is going to be some gas!

I think both teams will benefit from todays game. Waterford's backs (even including Murray for the first half) hurled well and show an improvement from last year. McCarthy was the only one to have faith in Mullane as his touch was way off for most of the game and i thought he should have been taken off after the first half. However he made his contribution by the end and got crucial scores when needed.

It's still April and the ground is still a bit soft so need for anyone to get carried away about all-irelands or anything like that yet. Croke Park in the championship is the real stage for performances like that but a win over KK is rare in a final so its a good days work.

On the referee I have to say that Kilkenny play a tough physical (and skillful) style of hurling and waterford went out and gave as good as they got. You need a strong referee in such a game and even though he didn't get it right all the time, the holding, subtle pushing off the ball and dragging (from both sides) was punished and that doesn't always happen when the cats are playing !! Well done ref for applying the letter of the law....

I don't think kilkenny can complain about the ref to be honest.

Delighted for Waterford. Can only bode well. The new players were exceptional, Molumphy and especially Kearney. This must mean they are now stronger than previous and are definitely in an excellent position. I hope they push on now and finally do it.

How Prendergast didnt get MOTM is beyond me, fantastic performance.

Well done to Waterford, I agree with the opinions expressed Re: Prendergast, excellent game.

While KK will be disappointed to lose this game they will have learned more from this game in prep for an AI Qtr final than they would from the Leinster Champ...

A lot of KK ball from back to forwards was misplaced.
I thought the ref was average in that he was not consistant.
Looked to be a large Waterford crowd there and great for them to celebrate a national title.

Well done the Déise. Beating Tipp, Cork and Kilkenny to win it is a worthy record.

Seamus Roche is very popular in Kilkenny, aleays has been. Although he could learnt to throw in the ball properly; don't drop it, and keep it straight.

A great win for the Deise men but a few things that Justin needs to get sorted.
Eoin Kelly's temperment. Lost the rag on at least three occasions and could easily have being sent off.

How was Walsh replaced before Mullane?

Why did he replace Murray when he was holding his own against Shefflin.

Declan Pender and Aidan Kearney had fine games.

Ken Mcgrath was quiet yet got the man of the match off Pat Fleury for scoring three long range points.

Seamus Pendergast is our most impressive forward in the league and the leader up there.

an excellent result for waterford. particulalry the way they won the last three games and most important the lack of goals conceeded. for a team like kilkenny to have so few goal chances is a testament to waterfords will.

kilkennys forward play was awful cody will eat them alive for the next month as their problems stemmed from being second to the ball and in the end from a lack of will.

the tale of the game for me was that once seamas roche stopped giving frees in handy spots for kilkenny they ran out of options.

the free that put kilkenny 15 14 ahead was a shocker (mcgrath flicked the ball back towards his own goals and went after it, shefflin ran across him and was gioven a free in) as was the richie power effort after the throw in when tony browne was floored.
i assume the more astute kilkenny fan won`t buy into that stuff about the ref.

it can be argued of course that shefflin was rusty and will be better in the championship and that john tennyson was out but shefflin hit 12 points of the 16 i think so he is hardly going to get more the next day and tennyson is a bit better than delaney but he is capable of a stinker on his day.

incidentally tommy walsh has to be the best fielder of a ball that i have ever seen. if the man was six foot tall he would be the best centre back the game has ever seen.

Walsh was brillant to make space for himself and the little tip at the back of the head of his oppenent works a treat for him. What a player he is.

Wouldn't say McGrath was quite, fielded plenty ball and broke up a lot of ball too throughout, thought he was much more impressive than recent games. At the time he replaced Murray KK were on a roll and i do think murray is limited even though his first half performance was the best from him in a long time, McCarthy made the right move at the time.

Waterford stun Kerry in hurling league final

Waterford 0-20 Kilkenny 0-18

A crowd of 22,235 watched Waterford capture their first NHL title since 1963 following an epic final at Semple Stadium in Thurles today.

The Deise led by 0-11 to 0-9 at the interval, although the sides were level on nine occasions.

But despite the great form of Henry Shefflin, who scored 12 points, it was to be a blue and white day.

Late points from Eoin Kelly and Seamus Prendergast ensured a memorable victory for their side with Michael Walsh the winning captain.

I checked the Kilkenny site and to be fair there was unanimous agreement that Waterford deserved their victory and the general reaction was to congratulate them on their performance. You overlooked the fact that the same guy you quoted as blaming the ref also said "No complaints about the result - fair play to Waterford". Maybe people should bear in mind that it's important to show grace and sportsmanship in victory.

while i wouldnt agree with TANS thoughts on mr.roche a ref most KK people dislike as he has never shown us anything to prove the feeling is not mutual, I would like to say that the team that wanted it more on the day won and deserved to win. A win not just in this match but a league won by beating the so called big three that should give them the confidence to close out the big matches later in the year something that has been a failing in the recent past despite them being as good as anybody else around.so well done Waterford enjoy the win and hopefully we get a chance for revenge later in the summer

Firstly, to win our first National Senior title in 44 years is fantastic, and is deserved not only for the 30 or so named today, but the rest who have been chipping away at this for the last few years. Every one of them played a big part today, and it might put to bed somewhat the myth that this current Waterford team dont have the bottle for the big day, the reaction to kilkenny rattling off five without reply was great... It was a 70 minute game and they hurled right to the end. Lots of similarities to the spirit showed by DLS last weekend.

For any kilkenny men giving out that Roche gave us a lot of handy frees, well, look back at some of the ones the cats got also. The Waterford forward unit is probably the best in the current game under the dropping ball, and this was obviously something kilkenny identified. They tried to combat this with a lot of pulling and pushing under puck outs, most refs leave this go, Roche spotted it and blew for 3 in a row in the first half, fair play.... But I will say aside from this there were a lot of other marginal calls, but I dont think any side was favoured more so.

This league campaign has been a big success for Waterford, and would have been so even if we didnt win today. Ringo Kearney and Stephen Molumphy we very close to the 15 for the business end of last years championship, but this campaign has franked that form, and both look likely starters come June. Kearney had his best day yet today, and looks to be getting bettter and better, he gave Fogarty a serious roasting and the only time Fogarty stole a few yards he recovered to make a great block. Molumphy did it the hard way, covered every blade of grass in Thurles and fought for every single breaking ball around the middle third of the field, he came out a fair few of them. Shane Walsh was very quiet today, but he has shown enough over the last couple of months that gives me plenty of confidence in him over the summer.

Its great moving forward now with a league final win like that, and John Mullane, Dan Shanahan and Eoin Kelly having an off day.

I though both sets of backs dominated the early exchanges, and this was extremely pleasing for Waterford with Dec Pender dominating Shefflin and then when An Rí moved out to the wing James Murray more than broke even despite being targeted with 70% + of kilkenny's puck outs. Ken was strong throughout and read the game superbly. Tony Browne was Tony Browne. Eoin Murphy had Cha in his pocket, and Ringo as said above had a great day.. So all in all as a unit, ably supported by Clinton Hennessy they were superb. Even when Murray was called ashore Jack Kennedy more than aquitted himself as a wing back for the last 10 minutes.

However the same could be said for Kilkenny's backs, with Hickey, Tommy and JJ particularly standing out. Even though I cant see Hogan lasting the championship as a full back, but thats not an issue for the cats with Mick Kavanagh likely to come back in and Hickey or JJ moving in to full back.

Waterford probably edged the midfield battle based on Brick's contribution for the last 15 when it really mattered and Stephen Molumphy's work as a kind of third midfielder. For KK, they will need to have Cha back next to Lyng for the summer.

Of the Kilkenny forwards there was none that really scared me when they got posession.. Gotha picked up his usaul few scores, Eddie Brennan has his one big surge at the defence, Shefflin was always dangerous, but the rest didnt do it. Richie Power will do well to hold his place to be honest, with Sheff back on the free's and Larkin, and Eoin Ried waiting in the wings he maybe to one to loose out.

For Waterford, Seamus Pender frustrated early on, dropping a few balls he should have fielded but as the game wore on he got stronger and stronger... Eoin Kelly didnt have one of his best days but in the second half did some serious work in his own half and hit most of his frees really well.. Mullane was poor and lucky to remain on the field but came good with two nice scores at the end and also set up point number 19 for Kelly. Dan was poor also and never really got into his stride. But for me the winning of the game was Flynns introduction, he took his point like no other Waterford forward could have, and just made things look very easy, his touch was class, he is class.

So all in all a good day, but still a few more things to be worked on, but time is on our side. As Brick said in his speach, ''there are a lot more bigger games then todays to come''....... I for one cant wait for them.

congrats to the Deise.....a great league final and Codys job is now surely on the line ;o)
Kearney at wing back was my MOTM by a long shot....a brilliant display for a new lad.
I did think the ref let a lot go with the Cats , their forwards were fouling a lot by pulling and draggin their markers but i guess the theory is the refs are'nt going to blow for everything so foul away lads...Roche was especially lenient with Delaney....was on a yellow for a clothes line tackle and got involved a few times afterwards...probably a liability for Cody now.
Waterford looked more fresh and condition wise they looked very
lean.....cud be their year you know....unless they meet Clare of course!!
