Ned Power the goalkeeper on the Waterford 1959 team passed away earlier today.
A true gent and also one of the greatest hurling skills coaches. Tallow and Waterford GAA owe him a huge debt and he will be greatly missed.

And we were discussing that great action picture involving Ring here just yesterday, a fitting final tribute I`d imagine.
RIP good man.

May he rest in peace, always sad to see men passing from a great team. You can`t keep a clean sheet from Father Time unfortunately.

A true legend of the game in waterford. He hailed from Dungarvan but spent many years as a teacher in Tallow where he helped spread the gospel. May he rest in peace

Very sad to hear about the death of Ned Power, another one of the heroes of 59 has passed on alas. RIP.
Ned Power often came to my local club to coach us when I was playing under-age. If only we appreciated at the time what was being done for us, the legacy that was being passed on. Ní amháin an iomáint ach an Ghaeilge freisin.
Ned Power was totally and absolutely dedicated to seeing that Waterford hurling achieves the highest standards possible. He will be remembered and his memory respected as long as Waterford people play and support our ancient game. Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach.

He was about 77 KC. He hadnt been well for some time.
He actually played a senior county final in goal for Tallow in 1980.
He was unbelievable as a coach. After a coaching lesson with him you would feel ten feet tall. He could remember the minutest detail of your game even if he hadn`t seen too much of you play. He would then tell you a few little things to improve your game that always worked.
Someone here a few weeks ago in paying tribute to Johnny Clifford mentioned something similar and it reminded me so much of Ned.

you`re right camann. My memory is playing tricks with me. I think it was the 1976 senior county final against Portlaw that he played in.

Played in goals in 76 alright , In the 71 intermediate county final he lined out center forward for Tallow on Bulterstown county player Paddy Kirwan and Ned gave him the run round around that day

One iconic image ... one moment captured in time ... serves as a lasting memorial to Ned Power...
So many of our best memories are associated with this man and his colleagues of the `59 team.
The debt we owe him - and them - is incalculable. Thanks Ned.

Very sad to hear of Ned`s death, a true gent in every sense of the word, got to know him in latter years, but I have great memories of him in the 50`s and early 60`s playing some super games with the Deise. He would have walked on the on the Munster Railway Cup teams` only for the great Mick Cashman, who was at the peek of his powers at that time.

Mnay years ago, Ned Power directed the school opera at FCJ Bunclody  .(it was Oklahoma, I have no idea why he was directing it .) ., I was in second year and was cast in one of the main roles. Ned, after a few rehersals, decided I was too small for the part and threw me out.
I didn`t mind to be honest, I found him to be an absolute gentleman, as did every one involved.
Obviously a legend in Waterford. Sad to hear of his passing.

Ned Power  .(1929-2007 .) . was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local clubs Dungarvan and Tallow and was a member of the Waterford senior inter-county team in the 1950s and 1960s.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Power played his club hurling with his local club Dungarvan and latterly Tallow where the local club grounds are now named in his honour - Pairc Éamonn de Paor
[edit] Inter-county
Power first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the late 1940s as a dual player of both hurling and Gaelic football at minor level. He later graduated onto the county`s senior hurling team where he became the first-choice goalkeeper in the early 1950s. At this time, however, Tipperary and Cork were the kingpins of Munster hurling, with all the other counties only providing a supporting role. All this changed in 1957 when Power won his first Munster title following a victory over reigning champions Cork. Waterford later played Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final, however, victory went to the men from Leinster on that occasion. Two years later in 1959 Power won a second provincial title. Once again Waterford lined out in the championship decider and once again Kilkenny provided the opposition. The game ended in a draw, however, when the two sides met for the replay the men from Waterford made no mistake in defeating their near rivals and Power collected a coveted All-Ireland medal. In 1963 he added a National Hurling League medal to his colelction before winning a third Munster title. For the third successive time Kilkenny were Waterford`s opponents in the All-Ireland final, however, the men from the Déise were beaten on that occasion. Power retired from inter-county hurling shortly after winning a Railway Cup medal with Munster in 1966.
[edit] Post-playing career
In retirement from hurling Power maintained a keen interest in coaching. A teacher by profession in Scoil Mhuire in Tallow, his coaching methods with Tallow GAA saw the club win almost every available county title between 1966 and 1980.
Ned Power died on November 15, 2007 after a short illness.

Amazing record as a coach. His work in Tallow will never be forgotten in that the Local GAA field was named " Pairc Eamonn De Paor" in his honour. Its a pity that the great man didn`t live until next year to see its opening.
He coached Tallow to their first underage title under his command in 66 or 67 which was actually played in Carrick on Suir before a WAterford Tipperary League game. The only honour that eluded him with them was a Senior football county title.
He coached Killrossanty to four in a row football titles and brought the Shamrocks to senior grade along with coaching other clubs at the time.
Coached many a coach that is involved in coaching today including the current Waterford manager.
Possibly the man whose picture is the most iconic in hurling.

Ned was nearly 78 years of age. His birthday would have been on November 19th. He was indeed a wonderful man and will be missed more than words can possibly say.

Another of the greats gone...
..when somebody mentions Ned Power, apart from the iconic image we all know involving christy Ring, I think of his gift as a coach and Paul O`Briens goal off his left hand down in Pairc Uí Caoimhe, that gave us a munster title... many people said afterwards, `twas Ned Power showed him that !
His stamp will remain on Waterford hurling for many years to come.
