I know I give RTe a lot of abuse but I have to give credit where credit is due
from rte.ie
RTÉ Television today announced that the much-loved original Sunday Game theme tune will be re-instated this year to celebrate 30 years of the popular flagship GAA programme.
The James Last composed theme tune, which was replaced in 2004, has been remastered by music composer John Walsh and will be played on tomorrow`s Sunday Game Live on RTÉ Two at 2.45pm, the opening programme of the season.
Paul Byrnes, exc utive Editor, GAA and Editor of The Sunday Game said: `When The Sunday Game theme tune was replaced in 2004 it was part of a remodernisation of The Sunday Game. We very much wanted to make the point that we were updating our Gaelic Games coverage and moving with the times.
`We`ll of course continue to have a fresh approach to our coverage this year with three new panellists and a new analysis system, but over the last few seasons we`ve been inundated with requests from the public to bring it back and this year, the 30th year of The Sunday Game, seemed to be the appropriate time to do it.
`Travelling the length and breadth of the country with The Sunday Game over the last few years, the replacement of the theme tune was always much talked about and lamented.
`It`s fitting that the 30th year of The Sunday Game will feature the best of both worlds - a link to the past while looking forward to what promises to be a very exciting Championship season`.

"Remastered" is the key word there Art.
I bet it will sound very different to the original.
I believe this is the 2nd time they brought it back as they also dumped it some time around 2000 or 2001 or am I wrong ?

As Mick says I`d say this will be the Paul Oakenfold version. Stand by for a dreadful dirge, we can but hope. If they`re going to back down they should back down, not come out with a b*****qised version of the old classic. They just can`t admit they were completely wrong.
A great coup would have been for TV3 to have opened their show with the old James Last version. Would have immediately have given them kudos as well as giving two fingers to RTE. You don`t see the BBC changing their tunes...from what I`ve seen, Match of the Day, skiing, snooker, golf etc have all had the same tune for donkeys years. It`s all about giving a feeling of tradition and authenticity, something RTE never understood in their rush to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I had warmed to the new tune, its amazing over time how you warm to something. And lets face it, the tune was never going to stop us from watching the Sunday game
Perhaps the old tune will be restored in some techno form of music.

While the BBC keep the same theme tunes for different shows, they do remaster some of them.
They essentially destroyed the Snooker one a few years ago and they still haven`t returned to the original.
The best ones they have are the Cricket Theme Tune (not heard in years as the BBC have no cricket ) and the F1 Theme Tune (The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, returning next year as BBC are getting F1 coverage back ) .
Ski Sunday tune aint bad either.
The new Sunday Game tune wasn`t all that bad. They had a different one a few years ago which was awful though.

the cricket one for those feeling nostalgic is Soul Limbo by Booker T and the MGs. The Channel 4 cricket tune Mambo No5 by Louis Vega wasn`t bad either.
The Snooker was the Racer by the Douglas Wood Group.

Sky and Setanta don`t seem to care for theme tunes?

They don`t ever seem to care. I`d say Sky hardly want to play the Champions League theme.
Talking of the Champions League tune, the original was fantastic.

They redid it with a new orchestra a few years ago and now it doesn`t sound half as good.

Agree with Micko and Sid, liked the tune for last year, and not in the least bit bothered about losing the original, having decomissioned the godawful 2004-06 version.
But the return of `The Chain` for F1 coverage will be welcome indeed.

my fellow brethern,
i would not for minute be wasting the glorious summer sabbath watching this sectarian spectacle you peolple call sport played out live on a fenian station
instead i shall and i encourage you all to learn the ballad of our forefathers as we prepare for the onset of the summer marching season and the glorious twelfth
`the sash"
Sure l`m an Ulster Orangeman, from Erin`s isle I came,
To see my British brethren all of honour and of fame,
And to tell them of my forefathers who fought in days of yore,
That I might have the right to wear, the sash my father wore!
Chorus:
It is old but it is beautiful, and its colours they are fine
It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne.
My father wore it as a youth in bygone days of yore,
And on the Twelfth I love to wear the sash my father wore.
Chorus
For those brave men who crossed the Boyne have not fought or died in vain
Our Unity, Religion, Laws, and Freedom to maintain,
If the call should come we`ll follow the drum, and cross that river once more
That tomorrow`s Ulsterman may wear the sash my father wore!
Chorus
And when some day, across the sea to Antrim`s shore you come,
We`ll welcome you in royal style, to the sound of flute and drum
And Ulster`s hills shall echo still, from Rathlin to Dromore
As we sing again the loyal strain of the sash my father wore!

Just watching the Sunday Game now.
This must be the oddest studio setup I`ve ever seen.
3 large seats in a circle facing each other into the middle.
Looks like something out of a Bond movie.

A bit jazzed up alright, hard on the eyes with that whirley thing in the background.
Pat has been given a throne now, all you`d need is a crown.
Further praise for RTE
I looked at that celebrity bainisteoir programme earlier, my God it has really taken off, there was a huge crowd in Derry for the game.
Good camera work too, I will miss Nell`s speeches, Marty is turning out to be the dark horse, but Keano has a better team.
Well done RTE, it was great reality sports TV, brought out the best in the GAA clubs too, fantastic stuff

Well done RTE to relegating the first round of matches of the GAA season to secondary sports news, fair play to having someone on the end of the phone to report on 1 of the games, fair play to having a crack team of editors on hand to make the show seem seemless, fair play RTE to being 10 years behind every other station in following other sports

Amazed they didn`t have footage from New York.
We live in a time when you`re average man on the street could send a video of himself half way around the world using a laptop, yet RTE can`t get footage of a Football game from New York. Amazing.

Particularly amazing when they announced at the end of the Sunday Game live that they would have highlights of the New York - Leitrim game in the Sunday Game.

Sky were using computer graphics like that over 10 years ago. They actually ditched it after a season or two.
Those new couches are a bit of an eyesore though.
