AFR’s ‘Angry GAA Fans’ returns to ‘The Irish Examiner’

Start the countdown now…

By popular demand, on Tuesday 20th May, AFR’s ‘Angry GAA Fans’ forum returns to the pages of ‘The Irish Examiner’. For all the fury and frolics of this year’s championships, don’t miss it. Make sure you get your copy of the paper.

If you’d like to get something off your chest about current GAA controversies, just drop   us an email at gaafans@examiner.ie. And even though our forum is for ‘angry’ fans … we’d also like to hear from you if want to say ‘Well done!’ to someone in the world of GAA.

Or ... if it makes it easier... just add your comment to this Topic  (like bofh has done )  and we`ll pick it up from here.

Check out some of last year’s comments here on or on ’The Irish Examiner’.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Problem between gmail and chair I think, but this is my attempted submission

First time mailer, longtime AFR Fan  (bofh is my username )

As the first weekend of GAA coverage comes to an end I have to say how disappointed I am in all the national broadcasters coverage. RTE was more interested in Manchester United winning the league that the start of the highlights of the Sports news on RTE. This in itself did not bother me too much, but I watched the Sunday Game tonight and was appauled to see that the report on Leitrim vs. New York was just phoned in, whether or not the reporter was at the match or not, but in this age of modern technology where you can see what has happened 2 seconds ago on youtube, how did neither RTE or the GAA see the benifit in having a video camera at the match.

As a frequent visitor to New York, I am only too familar with all the different channels available with either sports or news available, sureley a phone call to any station would have gotten coverage. I have grown up with video tapes of tapes of highlights of the season`s games, I am sure that there will be a tape made available of the highlights of the 2008 championship minus the first game of the Connaught championship.

I`m sure many people enjoyed the highlights of no Irishmen drawing or beathing another team of equal Irish stature, persoannly I would have prefered to have seen 15 men from New York represting an Irish game against the smallest populated county in Ireland.

Well said, bofh, a slap in the face for both sets of players and the thousands  (well, 2500 approx. )  of Leitrim fans who went to the game, new yorks supporters, organisers etc in new york. Still, it won`t be dwelt upon, it was a game Leitrim had to win and thats all that matters really. I always hear this thing about leitrim having the smallest population but what RTE in this case don`t seem to realise is that there are huge amounts of leitrim people scattered around the country, especially around dublin and its bordering counties.

Anyway, on another issue i`d like to comment on varies media outlets/ commentators complaining about the "low-key" start to this years championship. I think all of the above owe Westmeath, Longford, Leitrim and New York people and players an apology.

Who are they to say what a "glamorous" opening game is?? I challenge them to look down through the championship draw and find a superior fixture. Looking at Munster and Leinster nothing stands out, perhaps in Ulster? I doubt it. The Longford/ W.meath game last year was great entertainment. It`s not about having Kerry or Tyrone or Dublin on Tv, its about whether the game is entertaining or not, regardless of opponents or their odds on winning the all-ireland in september. Gaelic games really is the peoples game and if these reporters don`t like it, i suggest they stick to watching the premiership and Ooo and ahhh over the statistics of how many metres of the pitch Frank Lampard covered in a game!!

Yer man above makes a very good point above about no footage of the Leitrim game but why he insists on the throwing in the little chip on the shoulder dig about coverage of the last day of the Premiership season is beyond me. To say far more people were interested in the last day of the premier league than were interested in long v west would be a gross understatement.
I`d love to see GAA fans this summer just discuss their own games without constant references and comparisons to fcuking english soccer.

Supporters of whatever sport it maybe, alsways think that their sport is the best, I wasn`t trying to downgrade anyother sport or appear to have a chip on my shoulder, I was just trying to make a point.

A lot of soccer fans can`t understand bogball or stick fighting, a lot rugger fans can`t understand poofball, bogball or stuckfighting, I personally enjoy any sport  (except showjumping )
