He`s been caught out badly a few times recently on his radio show. He had Stephen Hunt on last night. Started talking to him about hurling and Waterford prospects this year. He was asking Hunt would he be going to the Clare match in Thurles. Fair play to Hunt he was able to point out to Des that the match was on in Limerick not Thurles.

He had Ollie Canning on recently shortly after he announced his comeback for Galway. Des was taking Ollie through all the honours he`d won when he mentioned a Fitzgibhon Cup medal. Ollie interjected to say he`d never won a Fitzgibhon Cup medal. A surprised Des responded that it says on your website you did. Ollie enquired which website? Wikipedia.

Sloppy enough mistakes from Irelands Number 1 sports broadcaster. Lets hope poor Joanne Cantwell doesn`t make elementary blunders like that or the poor girl will be savaged!

HIs colleagues just descibed him nicely there. Sports broadcaster Padraig Lodge said we will be hearing from Des at the golf shortly.

Mary Wilson: "No doubt he picked upa few tips.."

Padraig Lodge: "Knownig him, no doubt he did"

Why work when at RTE you can play golf while "working". I would love to see the working hours part of his contract cos it`s scandalous how little "work" he does.

In all fairness he`s a very good broadcaster. He`s light but he`s good. There is a depth to his knowledge. To be criticising a Dublin man because he didn`t know that a Waterford Clare game 3 weeks away wasn`t going to be played in Thurles is churlish to say the least.

And he was always a committed GAA man - wasn`t he the secretary of Cuala for years.

And he got where he is the hard way - working his way up from doing the local notes for the Carlow Nationalist, he wasn`t airlifted into RTE because of family connections like a lot of them. So good luck to him

he`s a bad broadcaster/journalist. surely it`s his job to know where other county`s have their games. would you forgive Pat Spillane fior making a similar mistake about kilkenny/Tipp hurling game?

ah would you stop - he`s a broadcaster, not a bloody encyclopaedia. How many people outside Clare and Waterford know or even care at this stage that the game is on in Limerick?

Yes I`d forgive Pat Spillane for making a similar remark.

If nit-picking Des Cahill`s ignorance of either the locations in which hurling matches are scheduled to be played or the exact contents of Ollie Canning`s trophy cabinet are the worst things you can find to say about him, then you`re obviously not very familiar with his work. There are no end of Des Cahills on this message board and in every pub in Ireland. He`s just the Des Cahill that got lucky.

Yeah I agree he does make some basic errors. And with age he prob has got a bit too comfortable  there. Half hour sports show a night - handy!! But he still has that likeable factor about him - asks the simple pubman questions and gets the best reactions, bit like bill. Anyone remember Des` interview with Platini, was brilliant. hes decent on `The Road to Croker`....makes for much better viewing that the one Ger Gilroy did 2 years ago.

I don`t mind him as a fella, but he can be shocking lazy in the topics he picks. He doesn`t have half enough knowledge to justify the gigs he gets.

An` after the break, we`ve a great `oul piece on the great Dublin-Kerry rivalry of the `70s, and what they used to be getting up ta.

Went off him during his ABU phase with Ian Dempsey some years ago and his anti Cork stuff rankles  (we get enough of that on sites like this without getting it on RTE too ) . He always struck me as a fan first and broadcaster second. One of the lads. That is never a good idea IMO - as Diamond Geezer says, there are Des Cahill`s all over the country but he`s just the one that got lucky. Lucky for him, unlucky for us.

He was Chairman of Cuala for a few years , you always see him at their matches. He is some man to raise money for them as well. He does a gig around the all Ireland for them every year , meet him the odd time , seemed like a grand lad.

no-one`s disputing that he`s probably a grand lad, he`s probably a good clubman for cuala too. i know plenty of chairmen who run clubs very well and wouldn`t know a football from a flagpole. it`s just indicative of RTE`s standards. surely there must be a few people in the country with media training and a good knowledge of GAA matters  (or sports in general )  the newstalk lads are an example of everything RTE isn`t

would ye get over yerselves with yer whingeing about des cahill. first of all, ye must have little else to be bothering ye when ye are picking on one or two errors that he might have made. even the best of them make those errors. hes a very likeable down to earth guy who is easy to watch on tv and if anything he is being held back. fair play to him if he is in a cushy number at present, he worked his way up and deserves to be there.
Fair play Dessie, hope you are not reading all this tripe.

For the amount of sporting events he has attended and remember it is his full time job, he shows very limited sporting knowledge.

Look, if the guy went out and arrogantly proclaimed some fact or statistic that was completely untrue about some aspect of sport, and did it on a regular basis or was prone to make stupid sweeping statements, then we could say he was an amadán who dosen`t know his ass from his elbow. But in fairness - even i could say - "See ya in thurles" of course forgetting that the match was in Limerick.
It shows a human side to him that makes him more likeable, but yet his knowlege is still very good. I also like the way he challenges people on his radio show and doesn`t let them get away with stuff, but not in a nasty or sarchastic way.. lets face it - would you prefer to listen to Des or Jim Kearney or Paul Collins?
He`s the type of fella if i heard speaking on the radio, i`d leave him on - and he`s a great sense of humour...

He attends Bray Wanderers games also & promotes the club where possible.
I met him myself a few times & he seems a genuine nice bloke.
