This year is historic for the Vancouver Irish Social and Sporting Club (ISSC ) .
25 years after sending a Junior Football team to compete in Chicago - for the first time in the club’s history - the Vancouver ISSC will be sending a Hurling team to the North American County Board (NACB ) Finals on Labour Day weekend in Chicago.
The Hurling Squad will be traveling to Chicago for the 4 day weekend and will play a minimum of 2 games and hopefully more if they progress to the Final. the first opponent is a team from Washington D.C. who have several years of experience playing in the NACB finals.
To help with fundraising the Hurling Squad are holding a Race Night on Friday, August 13 at 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in the Croatian Centre, 3250 Commercial Drive in Vancouver. This night comprises of 10 horse races being shown on a large screen where each race sponsored, for example, “The Vancouver Chase”. Can you help make history and send the Vancouver Hurlers to Chicago by sponsoring a race?
$300 is tax deductible for the company as we are a non profit organization
A Sponsor’s name will be displayed before the race, printed on the race card and a representative from the Sponsor will present the prize money of $50 and a bottle of Champagne to the winning horse owner.
How about buying and owning a horse (s ) in one of our races? The cost of a horse is $30, with 8 horses per race you are in with a great chance of winning $50 and a bottle of Champagne – presented to you before the whole crowd! You get to name your horse and this will be included in the race card on the night.
$20 will be asked for entry at the door and you can enjoy a few drinks, place a bet or two and enjoy some live Traditional Irish music in between races and of course that legendary Irish “ Ceol agus Craic! ” (Music and fun ) .
Bets are a minimum of $5 with half the profits going to the club and the rest being distributed among the winners!
For information please contact Sean Twomey at 778-988-2096 or email the club at

I just got an email from John O`Flynn looking for sponsorship. I`ll definitely sponsor a horse - only $30. Hope it goes well for them.

fantastic to hear that the game of hurling is being promoted on the west coast of canada and in the beautiful city of Vancouver.
I wish this effort all the best and long may it continue.

I wonder if John`s at the CYC. I`m in New York now and I`ll take a run up to the fields on Sat, hopefully I`ll see him there.

As Vancouver Gaelic Athletic Association members gathered at Mahony and Sons in the wee hours of Sept. 5 for a captivating All-Ireland Senior Hurling final in Ireland, at that very same moment, 41 players and supporters of the Vancouver Irish Sporting and Social Club’s Harps hurling team were readying to take on San Francisco’s Naomh Padraig in the North American County Board’s Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship at Chicago’s Gaelic Park.
After a comprehensive quarter-final victory over the 2009 Junior ‘B’ Champions (Washington, DC ) , the sudden withdrawal of the semi-finalist team from Boston (Fr. Tom’s ) meant that a Canadian squad was now contesting an American Championship after two previous semi-final efforts made by the ISSC in 1984 (Boston ) and 1985 (Chicago ) with Junior Football.
In Ireland, Kilkenny and Tipperary played a workmanlike first half. At the break there was only a point in it with Tipp up 1-10 to 1-09. Numerous phone calls were being made to Vancouver’s Paul Stack (Sixmile Bridge, Clare ) in Chicago to hear word on how matters were unfolding and that the Harps were heading into the second half with a five point lead over San Francisco!
Back home, there were now a small number of believers who felt Tipperary was within grasp of a Kilkenny and Vancouver of a San Francisco knock out. Former Toronto St. Mike’s hurling standout and visitor from Offaly, Joe Kenny, was anxiously eyeing his watch as his Air Canada 11:30 a.m. flight back home was nearing and he couldn’t leave without knowing the final outcomes.
Tipperary came out storming in the second half and denied a historic “five in a row” victory by Kilkenny with a 4-17 to 1-18 victory. 1962 Vancouver Son of Erin Gaelic Footballer Eddie Eviston was over the moon with the Tipperary victory and loudly led supporters in post-game celebrations.
From Chicago word came that the Vancouver Harps had defeated San Francisco 3-14 to 2-13. There players and supporters witnessed a Past President of the GAA and now Chairman of the Overseas Units, Joe McDonagh (Galway ) , present Vancouver’s Captain Sean Twomey (Aghabullogue, Cork ) with the Championship Trophy.
Certainly, one of the original seven GAA Founders in 1884, Patrick Joseph Ryan (Carrick-on-Suir, Tipperary ) , who is buried hours away from Vancouver in Cranbrook (d.1918 ) , was sure to be smiling with this hurling double for his native County in Ireland and his adopted Province in Canada!

Fantastic story. As one who spent a few years in Toronto in the mid to late 80`s, this story brings back great memories of early morning matches beamed from Ireland and victories on the football field on Centenial Park on a Sunday afternoon.
Great times and memories
