Just thinking about Ollie saying he`s retiring (I hope he stays on ) and the fact that he hasn`t won a SH inter-county AI after playing for Galway since 1999, is it possible or probable that Joe mightn`t win one either?
The years slip by so quickly.
Any thoughts?

Absolutely what I was thinking when I saw this thread. A proper Limerick senior hurling set up with Joe Canning would be super.
He is practically a Limerick man anyway.

Just as a matter of interest how is Joe Canning practically a Limerick man.Are ye trying to get another star full forward off another county like ye did in the 70`s

He has time on his side , but as you say , the years do fly by, and there is evry chance he will end up without an AI.
At the moment Joe looks like a chap that is not enjoying his hurling at the moment, he gave an interview in one of the weekend papers where he had a go at a section of the Galway supporters for stabbing himself and his teammates in the back when they have a poor performance and talking about them been two faced and all over you when things are going well.
For a young lad , I think he is under enormous pressure in the lead up to every big Galway game , every commentator seem to suggest that all Galway hopes depend on Joe , it can be a big burden to carry for a young fellow.

To be realistic he probably won`t win one at senior, though he has a couple with the club.
He does have about 8-10 years left at senior, assuming burn-out or injury doesn`t curtail his career.
But Galway don`t often win All-Irelands. None for over 20 years and realistically they won`t win one in the next couple of years.
After that it`s hard to tell but the odds are against it.

I`d say there`s a good chance he will win one. Galway have arguably the strongest panel we have had in more than a decade with a few good players introduced this year. Kilkenny will still be a force for the next 5 years but Galway are one of a few counties that can seriously challenge them. We are still lacking a bit of ruthlessness to put teams away, but fought tooth and nail on Sunday. I think we need to add a few more players during the league again and will be in serious contention next year. Most of the squad are in their early twenties or in their prime 26 - 28 years, they could easily have a strong 3 to 5 year spell in front of them.

Joe needs to lose a few pounds. It was noticeable on Sunday how supremely fit the Tipperary team are, which may account for their strong finish. Joe, of all the Galway team, was the one carry a noticeable amount of timber on Sunday. I`d say his lack of fitness is restricting his effectiveness from play at the moment

There was a thread here a few months ago Honan or Canning.Needless to say all the Joe fans were on saying that Honan wouldnt tie his laces.
But now that both are finished senior intercounty for 2010 i think its fair to say neither did themselves justice.
I have great time for Joe,dont think there is a more natural stick man around but that will only take you so far at top level intercounty.Fine at Fitzgibbon and 21s but not when there is that huge jump in tempo at senior.
Personally i think he will win an AI medal at some stage. If he can lose the few pounds and be 100% focused with a decent team around him it will be good enough for Galway.
If he looks after himself and stays injury free he has 10 years in him.

I think a thread should be started about Limerick fans being delusional and it wouldn`t be a wind-up. If you think your only problem is at full-forward, you really are living in a different universe.

Well I`d imagine Joe will be hurling for Galway for at least the next 10 years. Possibly even longer.
So really what your asking here is will Galway win an All Ireland in the next 10 years?
I think we will. As someone else pointed out we have a fairly young panel. Ollie is the only one of the team that started the last day that is over 30.
Added to this you have the players from last year`s superb minor team to come through and also players from this year`s minor team which also looks very impressive. I know we have had promising minors in the past that never made it but I think this time could be different.
Also I think gradually, year by year we are improving slightly, if we can keep going with this improvement and bring in a few of the promising young players then I see no reason why we can`t win an All Ireland within 3 years.
And it could well be the case that once we can get that elusive first one we could then go on to win 2 or 3 more in fairly quick succession.
So in answer to the original question, yes I think Joe will win a senior intercounty All Ireland medal.

he should do
they need to find somewhere to play him though so that he gets on the ball during play. half forward line would be my ideal place. but for that he`d have to lose some weight, speed up and work way harder off the ball

The fitness and weight issues that Joe is having now , must be big concern for Galway , if he is having these problems in his early twenties , what is it going to be like in his mid to late twenties.
I do not think he is lazy or anything , it is just some lads have a problem with weight no matter what they do or how hard they work at it.
I heard before that John Carroll of Tipp used to do a savage amount of conditioning work during the hurling season when he played for Tipp and was on every kind of diet, but just could not lose the weight , it could be the same for Joe.

That is an obvious concern. Plus there was the news last year that he had some kind of groin problem that needed rest. You would hope that he is taken aside and given the advice and assistance to ensure a long career but it`s not always the case when there`s county and AI medals at stake. Really its up to the Galway management to find the support players to take the pressure off Joe. They always seem to be well up to the standard underage but seem to disappear afterwards.
On a side note, Granny DV is from Galway and still goes back regularly. She met Joe and Ollie once and thought they were sound. Next time she went up she didnt meet the lads but she was given a small hurl for my 7 y-o signed by Ollie and Joe (and made by another brother apparently ) . The poor little DV who got the hurl was gutted after the final whistle on Sunday.
That`s the kind of thing that makes the GAA great, (although I am curious who he would have been shouting for in the Semi if Galway won! ) .

I dont know, Galway have been promising so much at senior level that i just dont think your senior intercounty sides have the mental edge to win an all ireland. Not since the great Galway team of the last 80`s have ye carried any real menace and steel to win the big one. Ye produce lovely hurlers but there is something wrong with them, they just dont do it to close out the deal. Ye have tried everyone from former all ireland hero Hayes to Ger Lough to John Mctryre. In fact since the inception of the qualifers in 1997 Galway have made just 2 finals and lost both. Its harder now than it was in the 80`s ( good team and all ) when all ye needed to do was beat Antrim every 3rd year or a one off performance and ye were in the all ireland final. Those days are gone. Everything has been tried to fit a system for ye but its had no joy, though the leinster experiment is too early to judge yet i agree.

FFS - I know the years go quickly but he is only 22 or so.
Good as he is, Galway will need a few more top class players to come through before he can hope to win an AI.
Still though, with a few minor and u21 medals and a league title as well as three club AI medals, he`s going the right way about it.

Fair enough g&b, I just thought it was a ridiculous thing to say.
Regarding the actual thead, the real question is whether Galway will win an All-Ireland in the next ten years and assumes JC will be fit if they do,
If you are to look at the current situation, taking into account recent form, including underage form, and tradition, the only thing you could say is that KK will win an All-Ireand an All-Ireland in the next 10 years, Cork and Tipp probably will, and Galway should but may not. After that, I would say Waterford would want to do it fairly quickly i.e. this year, but it is a huge ask, the Dubs are on the way up and have a hope, but Clare, Limerick, Offaly, Wexford and Antrim are too far off the pace and would have to have a huge turnaround to win an All-Ireland. I know the Clare lads will point out the U21 success of last year, but you are still a long way off the pace.

I`d give Galway a far better chance than Cork. Cork can turn things around quicker than most, but looking at what`s coming through, they`ll soon be at a low ebb. Tradition can only take you so far.
Time is a great leveler. Five years will see a new Kilkenny team. No JJ, Henry, Brennan etc They`ll still be good and will retain a winning mentality.
Going by current underage success (which, I know, is no guarantee of senior success ) , Tipp, Galway, Clare, Waterford and perhaps Dublin appear best positioned to `equal` them. That`s a lot of challengers so expect change at the top.

Slight correction - he is still only 21.
