Was only half listening to RTE radio 1 there but it seems GAA have announced that they`re putting 9ft high fence at Hill 16.
Inevitable I would say after that assault on the ref.

Be easier to fence in Louth, it`s not that big anyway and they did it with the Pale , back in the day.

Just heard that it was announced on the Des Cahill sports show there they are putting 2.8 metre tall barriers around Hill 16 to prevent pitch invasions.
Great stereotyping there, it`s not like spectators in the stands invade the pitch either and it`s easier to invade from the Lower Cusack/Hogan than Hill 16.

It`s true, just heard it on the radio there. This is unreal, nothing to do with the Louth incident where most of those clowns seemed to come in from the stand. How is this progress? They talk about safety issues and then fence in supporters like Hillborough, this is illegal in a lot of countries. How is Cooney getting away with this? His arrogance makes me shake with rage.He is acting like a dictator, how can he be allowed go against the overwhelming majority of this accosiation and put spectators at risk aswell, who does he think he is.I really cant fcuking believe this.

I heard the rationale before that the pitch invasions normally start at Hill 16 and the rest follow.

The GAA`s logic is ridiculous while this fence might stop a small amount of people invadeing the pitch the ones they had around all parts doidnt dtop them before and they wont stop them now, in fact more injuries will be caused bvy these fences as a crush can only be caused if you have something to be crushed against and now the GAA have provided this.
I`m just counting the days till Cooney is gone and he can fiuck back to Youghal and let the rest of us enjoy the games

Well they`ve been trying to stop pitch invasions for 20 years now. So does any one have an better ideas? Asking people not to do it has failed.

Yeah, just let them happen as they have for 126 years without any serious injury.

I know its a big if, but if Dublin win Sam there is going to be mayhem on the hill with lads trying to jump these fences. It will cause more accidents than it will prevent....

True but if the stewards tried to prevent fans from Hill 16 entering the pitch there would be a danger that those fans would get injured. Even without the stewards intervention there is a far higher risk of the fan who invades from Hill 16 injuring themselves ( and claiming compo ) considering their backsides are 6 feet off the ground when they are climbing the fence. If the fence is higher I presume they wouldnt be able to climb over or it wouldnt be worth the enormous effort involved anyway so I can see the logic from the authorities point of view.

I would argue that will be the case no matter who wins, the hypocrisy and stupidity is bordering on comedy.Every query or qustion about this is rebuffed with `health and safety`, so they decide to erect a 9ft fence where injuries from crush are a big possibility and climbing injuries are a given.I would estimate more injuries on sun if this farce goes ahead that in the last 15 years combined.

Must be the Aura from the rubble of the 1916 Rising buried deep in the soul of the Hill.
Hopefully the rubble from the Love Ulster affair was enshrined in the Aviva.
This further evidence of maturity would ensure no code has a monopoly on the Spirit of Ireland. A terrible beauty is born.

This will make things worse on sellouts as the gaa always overtsell the terraces. there will be crushes and the fans wont be able to go onto the pitch. Thats what happened in Hillsborough when they were stuck in the terraces!!!

Will planning permission be needed for this.
If so, I can see various bodies objecting on safety grounds.

Never thought of this, great point.Im not sure but planning may be required,if so i can see a lot of people objecting. Also i would ask the question is this legal. In England for example the Taylor report after Hillborough was scathing of the idea of fencing in fans.Im open to correction on this but i beleive it`s illegal there now.

Completely illegal in the UK due to the Taylor report.
Its unbelieveable in this day and age, and 22 years after Hillsborough that we are errecting fences in one of our newest stadiums where there has never been a single riot or anything of the like.
These actions will do nothing but infuriate fans. This is going to cause more trouble than anything. Can you imagine 200 fans, organising and trying to knock this fence by charging it at the same time. Someone will get killed.

Not many. Banned in most. They are not banned in Italy yet but are close to be being banned. Fiorentina were one of the last few teams in Serie A with fencing and they took their`s down last year on safety grounds.

Agreed. Is this mans ego so big he can`t see the absolute danger in this (not to mention the hypocricy re `health and safety` ) Is there nobody in Crkoe Park with the balls to shout stop and stand up to this man.

I simply don`t believe that the terraces are oversold , problems usually arise through bad stewarding and I don`t recall any crowd problem since Hill 16 was rebuilt.

Cooney is by a comfortable distance the worst president in GAA history. What is happening is obscene. There is one underlying issue here and that is money. What Cooney and McKenna want is a sanitised, corporate friendly banality of a presentation which pays no heed to any of the best traditions of the GAA. No speech from the winning captain, no crowds celebrating as it has always been done. You can bet your arse there’ll be a Vodafone logo in the background though.
One by one their excuses as to why supporters should not be allowed celebrate on the pitch after finals have been exposed. They talked about supporters damaging the pitch, but yet had no problem ripping it up straight after the Leinster Football Final last year. Money was far more important than having a good playing surface for the most important games of the hurling and football season.
They talk about safety and best practice. Putting up a fence in front of a terrace is the most dangerous thing you can possibly do. Fences, the very thing that caused Hillsborough, and are banned in every sports stadium in Britain under the Taylor report. Best practice? I couldn’t think of a worse one.
Why fence the Hill? The supporters who intimidated Sludden didn’t come from the Hill. They came from the stands.
If you pen fans in, especially on a terrace, you will have problems. The 1983 and 1993 All-Ireland Football Finals and the 2008 Cork-Tipp match are just three examples of the top of my head.
I walked through a fenced in passageway through a forest before the Oasis concert at Slane last year. It was extremely dangerous. Penning in large crowds in confined spaces like this is a recipe for disaster – 20 dead at the Love Parade in Germany two weeks ago brings home the complete lunacy of it.
We have been subjected to a sinister PR bull\\ campaign that supporters celebrating on the pitch is dangerous. Bull\\ talk about hooliganism and possible deaths. Where is the evidence? Where are the injuries? If it happened you can be sure the media would have been all over it. They weren’t for one reason – because it’s bull\\.
Now Cooney, McKenna, with the support of their media lackeys, have decided in their infinite wisdom to cage in Dublin fans and fans of other counties who stand on Hill 16 in the same way that the Thatcher government and police treated football supporters in the 1980’s. We all know how that ended.
